This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello - I found your board via google; I 'think' I'm on a 996-hunt. A coworker and I went out to lunch and the whole while he was telling me about his mid 80s? maybe? 911 he had in Germany, while stationed there (he's army, and I'm Dept of Army Civilian). While he had a good time in my rx8; especially on the clover-leaf near base, he kept talking Porsche. Well - seems 99-01 911's are actually 'not that much' compared to what I'd assumed they were. In fact, seems I can get one for about the same - or less than - my other previous RX8 replacement; 2004 S4. So - I'm here now, researching and reading. Already I've found some great info; I know the options I'll look for (lsd/traction control, minimum) - now it's just going to be me reading through many, and replying to a few, threads. As i have yet to drive a 996, I'm a little unsure if the handling will be good enough to pry me from the rx8 - however, I doubt if there's ANY 'less good' handling on the part of the 996, it'll more than be made up for in power and 'class'. If I can find a nice silver or gray 996 in the coming months I'll post-up. Thanks Darin

POST 2Original post

Good luck - read as much as you can here, and go and drive as many as you can out there.

POST 3Original post

Since TC, Traction Control, comes with an "embedded", virtual, LSD, you will have no need for a mechanical one.

POST 4Original post

Keep in mind that although these cars have depreciated. Maintenance and repair cost is still comparable to what a premium car would be.

POST 5Original post

Darin, after you drive a 996, you will want one. Secondly, budget $1000-$2000 per year on maintenance. Third, before you buy, test drive as many as you can and get a PPI from an independent shop. Good luck
