Suggestion

In any case, the extent of my "anti squeal" efforts was to use the stock vibration dampners, which are supposed to elimate the vibrations that cause squeal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought a set of new Mintex red box pads off a vendor on ebay - the rears say 996, but the fronts say 997. I assume the front pads wont work then, or are they compatible??

POST 2Original post

They will work fine. They are the same brakes, but with a slight proportioning valve change and a different finish to the calipers. There is a slight difference in friction on the front or rear pads (I don't remember which) due to the change in proportioning. If you upgrade to Sport pads, they use the same part #'s for both (plus 986 and 987 Boxster/Cayman S models).

POST 3Original post

I think I bought the same pads from the same vendor. He too called them "red box" pads, even though those words appeared nowhere on the box or the product itself (the box was red, however). The box also bore a 997 part number. The pads themsleves are the ones with the two large metal cylinder's protruding out from them. Are these the ones you purchased? If so, I'd be curious to hear your experience, as I've had trouble keeping mine from squealing (minor, not major squealing), even with new vibration dampners. I also found that these pads were ever so slightly larger than the stock pads, which made them protrude off the edge of the rotor (making it impossible to install them flush on a rotor with any kind of appreciable lip without filing/chamfering the edge of the pad). Good luck.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies guys. ScottArizona, I'm okay with minor squealing - I think. Did you use some anti-squeaking stuff on there? as for the size difference, any issues with that? installing them turn out OK? also, was the vendor Glenn Tull?

POST 5Original post

Wasn't Glenn Tull...I bought from ForeignCarParts, a big outfit with over 10,000 ebay transactions. In any case, the extent of my "anti squeal" efforts was to use the stock vibration dampners, which are supposed to elimate the vibrations that cause squeal. As far as installation problems, I just had to get new rotors (my rotors were very worn) to get the pads to fit flat. I don't think I would have had this problem were it not for the fact that the pads were just a tad big. Good luck!

POST 6Original post

Hi Scott. Thanks again for saving me with the advice on the EVO CAI. I'm really happy with the second generation..no more CEL. GunKata, you do not want to use the anti squeal compound...it only makes them squeal worse. I tried to reuse the factory vibration hardware...it was terrible. You might be ok if you try new vibration hardware with the mintex pads. The Mintex red box pads do not have the counter weights on the top. After three tries, I bought new factory pads. My car no longer sounds like a school bus.
