I've used a coathanger to "hang" the calipers in the past, so that tip saved me atrip back into the house for some!

The only tip I'll offer is you need a 10MM Allen to get the rotors off, and you want to use some threadlocker on the caliper bolts when you replace them.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was lucky enough to buy Chuck's Schnells, so I'm looking forward to a much better sound for my 996 (thanks again!). I also am replacing all my pads and rotors as well. However, there's nothing like starting these nifty little projects when our twins are due on 5/10. I've found plenty of DIY's to follow for both the brakes and muffler installs, but was hoping to get opinions on the biggest "gotcha" for either project, that can keep them from doubling in estimated time to complete. I've got my tire guy adown the street as a backup, in case I really run out of time, but nothing would be more aggravating than me not doing the stuff that is well within my abilities. Thanks guys!

POST 2Original post

There are few snags for the pads and rotors - you can do easily do them all in 1.5 hours even if you've never done them before. The only tip I'll offer is you need a 10MM Allen to get the rotors off, and you want to use some threadlocker on the caliper bolts when you replace them.

POST 3Original post

I would also recommend hanging the brake calipers from your suspension. The last thing you would want to do is damage a brake line when changing your rotors.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did my boxster rotors/pads (and on other cars), and I assumed it would be similiar. I've used a coathanger to "hang" the calipers in the past, so that tip saved me atrip back into the house for some!

POST 5Original post

While you are changing the mufflers out...put in new spark plugs. they are cheap... Bosch from Vertex at $4.00 or so each and with the muffler off sooo much easier.

POST 6Original post

For the muffler install, be careful with the WD-40 around the O2 sensors as it can screw them up. The tips for me were the worst part to get off, but Gota911 had a double screwdriver technique to open those damn clamps enough to get them off... would have saved the skin on my knuckles if i'd have known this.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know, but too bad I replaced them in the fall, and still have the scars to prove it!

POST 8Original post

pchak - check out posts #11 and #14 in this thread. #11 contains DIY instructions on how to swap your mufflers and, as Dr_KarlB stated above, post #14 shows you a relatively easy way to remove the clamps that hold the tips to the mufflers. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ht=screwdriver

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tim- thanks! I missed this one, and I'm even a poster on that thread. That's one of the best diagrams I've seen.

POST 10Original post

Bill: Hurry up and install the mufflers!! Your twins are going to arrive and you'll never get around to it. Your priorities are about to change my man!! The 10th is fast approaching.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ha Ha! I actually had part of the afternoon to install the mufflers. The only problem I had was with the clamps for the tips. Both were shot. Hopefully, the dealer will have a pair. I'm probably going to pass on doing the brakes though.

POST 12Original post

Bill, I have done both and I would say the brakes and rotors were easier than the mufflers. Only takes about 1 hour to do fronts and rears. If your rotors are worn as bad as mine were then you may want to remove a little brake fluid from the reservoir to avoid spillage/overflow when you push the pistons back into the caliper.
