Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello. I keep hearing about how the 996's are a great value due to steep depreciation. Would you all agree with that? I just noticed a new posting for a 2002 C4S. It is $56,800.00 for a five year old car. Original list is about $80,000.00 (plus options). 30% depreciation does not seem very steep at all for a five year old car. I realize that owners may disagree with that
Is the C4S just the rare model that holds its' value real strong or has the whole "great deal" been overblown?
According to one of my books, Porsche sold 170,000 996's. I would guess that means that 996 C2's won't become rare for about 30 years, if that
And you can find some pretty nice prices on C2's, especially 99's and 00's
I am just curiuous what the faithful think.

The '02+ MYs are holding their value a bit better than '99 and '01, because the '02 got the 3.6l engine upgrade and a bunch of other improvements. Also, the '99 and '01 MYs were a bit more prone to some of the big problems.
I found that the C4S models were a wee bit pricier than equivalent C2 and Targas, but not bunches more.
$56,800 for a 2002 C4S seems pricey, unless it is immaculate and very low miles.
Remember, the thing the C4S has going for it is all the standard equipment it has OVER other P's, such as -- Memory seat with FULL POWER, PSM, FULL-Leather, Wide-Body, Turbo-Brakes, every other part the Turbo has, except the turbo . THIS is why the C4S's value is about 10k OVER a standard C2.
A low mile, heavily optioned, MINT condition 2003 C4S WILL command $58 at a dealer.
To me the C4S is much more attractive than a C2, and I have no urge for a cab. You certainly do pay a premium though.

PS: The one in Rennlist classified has about 32,000 miles, and I think was just posted today.
i prefer air cooled 911s but its tempting cause the 996 prices are low...i almost bought a 99 with high miles, but got cold feet..decided that if i get one it would HAVE to my02+..the earlier ones are not so great imo..the 996 is a great car but i really like the older cars..maybe i can seing both..hmmmm
I imported and landed my 2002 996 C2 without PSM, but with full leather and BOSE, plus the 18" wheels and some carbon fibre trim with 66000 kilometres in my driveway for $50K Canadian all taxes, duty etc etc paid. I figure the same car bought new in Vancouver would have cost me $140K CDN all taxes etc paid.
I think that's a SMOKING deal...and I am absolutely flabergasted at the quality of this car. It is much much nicer than I expected - and I had high expectations. It was worth the $140K new - imagine how I feel about owning this thing for about a third of the price.
The reason that people say the 996's are a great deal is that the 993 prices are still in the 50's for a quality car whereas the 99 996's are in the 30's. Frankly, I think that you get a lot better driver from the 996 than the 993 although I love the 993's look and sound. (let the 996 v. 993 flame war begin
)
Just out of morbid curiousity, I scanned Porsche.ca for C4S's and found three:
1) 2003 with 52 Kms going for $81,900.00
2) 2003 with 34 Kms going for $89,900.00
3) 2004 with 45 Kms going for $82,900.00
I'll bet that if they had a 2002 it would be mid-70's and up
Importing would be a "no-brainer", although decent C4S's are not exactly cheap in the US.

I wrote the cheque April 2 2007. The seller was motivated - he had an opportunity for a 993, and he wanted it. The seller was in the mid-west and selling Porsches there is more difficult I suppose. The seller did not apear to *need* the money. He bought the car only a year prior, but I guess it wasn't the Porshe experience he was looking for. Timing is everything. I think this is the best deal one could get on a facelift 996
The car is indeed exactly what I wanted - and it is flawless and just really fu&^%$ing nice. I love it. My wife loves it too.
Hey Shane, just saying hi, I'm next doors in NB...
I' m not looking at C4S , but scanning the New England market (cars, com, autotrader)with our 90c dollar makes alot of sense....
There is great info here on importing, and after reading this forum and 6speed for a few months, 2002 + MY seems a safer bet....
Jasper's obviously got a great deal....
Are you only looking at C4S, would this be a daily driver for you ?
Du you guys have good mechanics (not dealer) in HAlifax ?
cheers
How did it jump to $59,000? I would put conversion at about $45,000.00. Then 14% tax, depending where you live?
Obviously, I must be missing some major costs.

I decided in January to treat myself to a Porsche next year (business permitting). I am still trying to figure out which one. So far I have considered:
911, 928, 964, Boxster S, Cayman S, and 996. Owned one Porsche book in January. Now own 19
Good luck with the hunt!
In know you were talking to Lerxst, but for the record, my costs were:
1) $35K USD x 1.16 = $40.6K CDN
2) $40.6K x 1.06 (gst) x 1.061 (duty) = 45.66K CDN - yes they tax the tax.
3) $300 CDN flat out for registration and AC levy = 45.96 K
4) $100 for local inspection = $46.06K CDN (don't pay for DRL by the way there's a zero cost hack. I've heard that Porsche dealers charge $1K !!!)
5) Add BC PST $40.6K x 0.07 = $2.8K CDN = $48.34K CDN
6) Add $200 USD for a PPI at 16% xchange = $48.64K CDN
7) My dad drove it home for me and didn't charge me anything because he onjoyed it so much - add another $1.5K CDN if you have it shipped.
8) I put a set of rear tires on so add $1.2K CDN - $49.84K CDN grand total landed in my driveway
I was using a multiplier of 1.42 (ie 1.42 times the US price was my predicted price landed in BC) while I was looking. At $40K USD Lerxst would have landed his car for $56K CDN in Vancouver. Mind you I had zero cost for transportation, and I paid nothing for my DRL, although I did put tires on the beast.
Did I mention mine has a new clutch and one year's worth of CPO?
I know... I made out like a bandit and I feel almost guilty except that I'm very deserving on account of I'm such a nice guy (haha).
Jasper pretty much covered it, but here's my breakdown for the $39,900 USD vehicle, plus $400 USD admin fee:
Vehicle: 46,748 CDN
Duty: 2,852
GST: 3,472
PST: 2,976
PPI: 325
Canadianizing: 600 (Porsche dealership put in DRL module and did a couple personal tweaks)
Pickup costs: 800 (Quoted $2500USD & 6 weeks for delivery, so I flew down and drove it back)
Border Fees: 300
Inspection: 100
Interest: 200
Broker fees: 250 (worth it IMHO. He did all the paperwork for me)
Total Price: $58,623 CDN
bang for the buck in the 996's its hard to beat the Turbo, the GT3 is great albeit not nearly as practical. Both use the bullet proof GT1 race block which is a very hard to beat upgrade not available in the other 996's. I've seen more than a couple of pristine 996 TT's at $60K and even lower if you don't mind a tip.
The high cost of CaymanS was pushing me toward a TT but even the CaymanS have started a noticeable downward dip with one Rennlister reporting a $51K deal on a showroom 06 that was selling at $70K only a year+ ago.
997 GT3 RS aside, the historically high production of Pcars seems to be working against its current owners and encouraging them to trade in for new models. Porsche are doing very well.
Thanks for the reply! Lots of food for thought. I think I will print out both breakdowns.
I import regularly so I should know better, but GEEEZZ it gets up there quick.
