Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

Suggestion
Adjust the cables after each ride to what feels best.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust cables' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust cables' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Turns out jkb did a very good job on his own in resetting the shift cable ends in the cable connectors.

The tool assumes that the linkage is already set properly.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

sorry for the panic button, but i am in the middle of the SSK install, the car is all taken apart and i cant seem to figure out how to get the reverse gear pivot ball in its place. it seem like there is a little white clip that goes in there. do i simply not need it? i can't seem to get it in there. i'll post pics in a few minutes -- need to grab my camera from upstairs.
anybody around who might shed some light on this?
ok, i got everything assembled. i guess i dont need that part, the original shifter uses it, but not B&M SSK.
but now i just realized i didnt mark the cables correctly. what do i do? just guess it the best i can?
so i took the car for a ride and tried a few different linker combos. they all seem OK. not sure which one to pick. is there a chance of this possibly ruining the transmission if hooked up incorrectly?
i'll try to find somebody locally on monday who got this adjustment tool.
The key is to make sure each gear is engaging fully and smoothly. There is only one way to ensure that the gear is fully locked in and that is by verifying the position of linkage on the side of the tranny. The tool assumes that the linkage is already set properly.
If you have done it enough times, you are able to "feel" what the proper adjustment is by moving the shifter into each gear.
Take the best guess that you can and connect the cables. THe shifter should be in the "neutral" position as indicated by the "+" symbol in the shift pattern below, half way between 3rd and 4th gear and half way between (not counting reverse) completely left and completely right. See if there are any teltale signs as to where the cables were prior to removing them and attempt to put them back there.

As 1999Porsche911 said, keep the console off until you adjust it to get it right.
hmm... so you saying there is no way i can now adjust it correctly and only guess? that sucks... the problem is that with a new SSK, i dont even know how it is suppose to feel (harder to shift is normal?)
No worries, Place the car in neutral, and then line the shifter up in what would be the neutral position, i.e, the center of the shifter yoke.
After you have these lined up then just mark the relative positions of the shift cable attachments to the shifter attachments, mark them with a sharpie, then hook them up.
It is really much simpler than it seems. This is essentially what the factory procedure is, with the exception that there is a tool that centers the shifter. Given you don't have the tool, then line it up by eyeball, and if you are still worried, grab some duct tape, and tape the shifter in position, then hook it up!
After your road test, If a particular gear is stiff, make sure the thrust nut at the front of the shifter is not too tight (this is what gives the shifter its "tightness", stick the transmission in neutral, take the tension off of the shift cable springs, and let everything fall to its natural position, hook it back up, and everything will be fine.
BTW, VW and Audi shifters work in exactly the same way (wonder why?), so this process works for them as well.
Turns out jkb did a very good job on his own in resetting the shift cable ends in the cable connectors.
The right/black cable was right on the money. The left/blue cable connector was off just 1 notch - not even worth the effort to correct.
