my opinion is they did it to grab money and fool the buyer by givin them a not really improved model and changing the specs to make it look better and then chargin the same price as the outgoing model with the same performance.

And a 997S optioned like that is heavier, has only 10 more HP, and will run around $90K!

If you want a street oriented car that you can use on the track, OR if you need back seats, then the 40th is an outstanding choice.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

BTW - nice looking ride! Good luck!
That is a $55K tops. They were unloading these cars several years ago when they sat on lots for low 70's and couldn't even sell them quickly at that price! Great car, bad product for the market at that price point. Invoice was 78 on those cars are dealers were selling at invoice MINUS holdbacks.
FYI....for 65K territory you are well within Turbo category and approaching GT3 category.
Disagree with LVDEell. With low miles, navi and the other extras, low $60s is eminently do-able. Comparably equipped C4S cars (which are slower, to boot) still trade above $65K at times, and even garden variety C2 cars w/o X51 and all the other 40th equipment sell in the $50s, esp. w/only 12K miles.
I love my 40th! Won't give it up for another 2+ years, when the CPO warranty runs out.
Good luck with the sale.
Disagree all you want. That car will NEVER sell for 65K. Heck, you could have bought it years ago for the neighborhood of 72K. Totally understand your stance as you have a vested interest. But you are starting to sound like Gant.
I kinda agree with Dell on this one, $65k is very high for this car. I like it, I wish I had found one like this when I was searching, but no way I personally would go over $55k.
That being said, I hope you get what you are seeking, and more power to ya! =)
Disagree with you here, bud.
I could've gotten a "garden variety" mint condition '02 with solid options and 18K miles for $46K.
And this car at 65K is insane not to be mean to the seller here as I totally want him to get every penny in the market.
it's just not special enough to justify the price. 997Ss are superior in every way so why would anyone pick this one over it for $65K? for the looks.... not different enough. performance? still getting handed by the 997S. interior? looks avg.

It's pretty special indeed with 345 HP and limited slip, plus every interior option as standard. And a 997S optioned like that is heavier, has only 10 more HP, and will run around $90K!
not if you're smart and buy used. heavier? the 997s is still faster. newer. updated.
interior options? the interior on that looks ... avg.
again, not special.

I did a quick search on AutoTrader and here is what I found:
2005 997S
$65,000 - $69,999 18 cars
$70,000 - $74,999 12 cars
$75,000 - $79,999 5 cars
Non-S 997 cars were starting $57,400.
If I were looking to spend $65k - $70k, it would be for a 2005 997S, not a 2004 40th Anniv.
I have to respectfully disagree as well. I've recently been in the market for a 996 and really clean well-optioned 2002 C2's with 20K miles or less can be bought for $45-48K.
I love the anniversary model too, but there's no way I'd pay more than $55K for one unless I was obsessed with having that particular car/model. Any more than this and you're into TT territory, which to me is no comparison.
I will also agree with the over priced crowd...$65K...no way.
If there were only 100 produced, it would be different. 1963 is a lot of cars. Doesn't really put it in a collector car category. So, what you have is a very nice optioned 02 with low miles and some special badges. Again, not worth much of a premium in my opinion.
Exactly! There were twice as many of these produced as the GT3 which destorys this car in every way possible. Also released as an 04 model (with some leftover sold as 05's). And to us in the GT3 crowd <1000 units produced is NOT rare. To try and sell this "40th" for a few thousand less than a GT3 is a pipe dream.
As I said before, while this is a great car, it came as a "package deal" and you either liked it and wanted or you didn't. They made TOO MANY and they sat on lots into the 2005 model year and they were giving them away (new) in the low 70's. True, some people paid the 89K price tag assuming it would be a collectors car but it was a base 996 with leftover powerkits added as "Standard" and some other "special" options. For that coin, people were optioning a 996 EXACTLY as they wanted for less. Consequently that is what ultimately killed the 40th. Look at the Club Coupe. Less than 100 avail and they don't command the healthy premium that you would expect for a small produced number.
If they wanted to make this a truly special collectors car they would have produced 40 of them and made them something indicative of the past 40 years and what made those years special for each of the 40 released.
They've had one on the lot with 12k miles in Scottsdale for months. They're asking price? 69k! That is until recently, when they RAISED the price to 72,900! Wow, and I bet money no luggage!
Still, I think it's a really really nice car and came very close to buying one but the price wanted was a little more than I had budgeted out for a used 996. Also, 1963 is a number of cars that will be a collectors item, but it will take at least 30years to get there. My favorite is when ford makes abouit 10,000 gt 500's and tells everyone they are getting limited production. lol
It's a great car but $65k is too high. Your sale price needs to start with a 5 IMHO.

Great car but stay realistic. $65K is unrealistic. I'm sure everyone love his 996 here on the board and thinks that it's better than the market average but open your eyes: when you were a buyer, did you believe all this salesman blabla: great options all worth thousands of $, unique car, pampered, never driven in the rain, ... nice but it's not much worth. We're talking about a Porsche 996 - a mass production car, so the market dictates the price, nothing else.
No it doesn't.
The GT3 and the 40th are not even aimed at the same market.
If you want a track oriented car that you can use on the street AND you do not need back seats, then the GT3 is the car for you.
If you want a street oriented car that you can use on the track, OR if you need back seats, then the 40th is an outstanding choice.
They are really aimed at two entirely different market segments.
This price may be too high, but comparing the price to a GT3 doesn't help make that argument in my opinion since they are not even really competing for the same potential buyers.
A much better comparison is with other 996 coupes. Specifically, is the X51 package plus a turbo nose and LSD worth 30K? That is the question . . .
You ever notice that sometimes a car being sold with modifications to it that the owner will try to get 100% of the mod costs back?!
I was looking for a 40th before I got what I have now. It had most of the things that this car here has minus the short shifter and K40 and it had less than 9K miles on it. Sale price $57K. I didn't act soon enough and it was gone.
Low mileage?! I love that term. Watch on ebay some cars that are selling and some that are not. The prices for an equally equipped machine in the same model year but with mileage different, on at 9k and the other at 25k, will be listed and sell at the same price.
Good luck with the sale either way. Nice looking toy.
Talking about resale value ($) Todd not track performance.
However, you comparo of a 996 with X51 and LSD is, I agree, the better route to go. But there is NOTHING wrong with comparing the two as I have. To say they are 2 differenet drivers isn't 100% the case. But for that price, like I (and others) have said, you are in Turbo territory and close to GT3 territory. The market the 40th might have been aimed at a specific buyer as you say it would be more representative of the Turbo crowd (fast blvd cruiser).
I think that question was relevant when the car was first introduced and the 40th cars were actually selling for 25-30k more than non-40th cars. I don't think anyone, even the guy who started this thread, contends that the 40th is worth 30k more than a non-40th at this point in time. IMHO, the question of whether or not the X51 package plus a turbo nose and LSD is worth 30K is moot. The relevant question is "How much is the X51 package and LSD worth today?" I'd guess the answer is in the range of $5k. The turbo nose is purely cosmetic and doesn't add much to the value of the car (similar to the unique color, polished wheels, face plate dial rings, etc.)
My take on the subject is.... I bought my car roughly the for the same price of a non-40th car so I'd expect to sell it for roughly the same price as a non-40th car. At the same (or $5k higher) asking price, I'd hope my car would be more desirable than a non-40th car and sell quicker. I don't see the car as a collector's item any more than targas, Titanium edition Cayennes, custom painted turquoise blue Boxsters, etc. One could make a valid argument that all of these models were limitied production, but not models that command a significant premium.... unless you have commemmorative luggage to go with it. With the luggage, you should be able to get an extra $10k.
You know what's interesting about this thread???? The guy who started it hasn't posted since January 27. We're expressing more concern about his car's value than he is. Hmmmmm......
Oh, I've overseen one detail of the add: "Porsche Leather Crest Keychain". I've to revise my estimate. I think his car is worth more than $70K and he posted back in Jan, so that's 3 months less depreciation on the car when he did ask $65K.
As a reference point at the end of 2005 I bought a brand new leftover 2004 with 24 miles on the clock at delivery for 60. granted it is a base C3, but it is very well optioned and was brand new. I love the 40th Anniversary and would have bought one when I was looking, but couldn't seem to find one in the right price range at the time. I do think this one is way over priced at 65k unfortunately, but I do hope you get that much for it!
the only person who will pay $65k is a collector type. assuming that guy doesn't come along, i think most people would opt for a cheaper yet comparable 996 or 997 which are becoming more common in the mid-$60ks today, including S's and with CPO.
They'll all agree. The only reason they bought new 997's was because they waited too late to buy new 996's. I'm sure they've been kicking themselves ever since!

nah they they bought them because they thought the 997 is better, when actually the 997 is slower the the 996, Porsche used to post 0-62 mp/h specs (0-100km/h) and since the 997 they started posting 0-60 numbers. 0-60 times make it look faster then the 996 when they really arn't.
I feel sorry for those that did get a 997, they should havn't waited until the face lift comes out with DFI and the extra hp. Now that's an upgrade to the 996 but the current 997 is just there to get the 993 crowd to buy a new 911.
say what you want but the 997S is superior in every objective way to the 996.
now if i were to choose between a 997S or a C4S, i'd pick the latter everytime because it looks better in my eyes and i value this more so than the outright performance specs.
choose between a 997S and the uber 911 anniversary edition, i'd go with the former everytime. the 997S not only performs better but it looks fresher, too.
what can i say? i love a wide ****. =D
I agree the 997S is better slightly but your talking alot of $ for slight preformance gains. The 997 non "S" is plain **** and never shoud have came out. I would take a Cayman over it.
They should have made the S the 997 and the 997S the 997S with X51.
How's this for objectivity..... I've yet to be passed by a 997 on the track..... except by street GT3's and GT3 cup cars of course. When the 997's start passing me on the track, then I'll agree that they can outperform my 996. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy my car along with my 1,963 fellow 40 Jahre brethren.
Sounds like a bit of an overstatement to say that the 997 is ****. The performance differences between the non S and the S are not THAT different.
Most of the difference between a 40th, a 997, and a 997S likely will be due to driver skill.
yes an overstatement. just displaying my dissappointment with the 997 non "S" over the 996. my opinion is they did it to grab money and fool the buyer by givin them a not really improved model and changing the specs to make it look better and then chargin the same price as the outgoing model with the same performance.
Thanks for reminding me. Gee, it just occurred to me that without luggage, the 997 owners have to just toss their garments and toiletries into the trunk and backseat when they travel. Wow, how do they keep their clothes from getting wrinkled and keep mouthwash, toothpaste, and lotion from spilling onto the seats and carpet? That's got to suck!
