I've also a K&N and already exchanged the MAF (BTW: I paid $360 and my Indie promised that this is the price he paid at Porsche - no labor for the change).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I put on my stock airbox and the problem was solved.
Has anyone installed a cold air intake and not had any problems?
I really want one but I hear so many horror stories.
I would like to believe if I don't over oil the filter it will be fine.
Same here. I installed mine approx. one year ago and no problems. Here is a pic of my install. I slightly modified the intake my self to use the OEM inlet tube.
As you have a '01, I'd expect a blown MAF with the K&N. However, I believe the upgraded post facelift MAF is immune against this issue. On the other side, there is no guarantee that the EVO system does not blow your MAF (maybe less probable) whereas it already costs you the amount of a MAF more than the K&N. In terms of performance and sound I don't think there's a big difference between the 2 systems. Only observation I have is that the K&N filter is placed closer to the deck-lid fan, so it might benefit from more actually cold air than the EVO. But (there's always a but) the K&N might be more exposed to rain due to its position. BTW I keep the net on my K&N cone filter; might help to hold off larger particles from the system.
I had a K&N on my 99. Not anymore. Blown maf after about 3k mies. I very strongly suspect it is primarily the 3.4 liter cars that have the biggest problems, and that a 3.4 liter car will eventually have problems with either the K&N or the evo, although I believe the maf sensor will last longer with the evo unit. This is all anecdotal, but I did a lot of research, both before and after I installed my intake. In 02 they changed the design of the maf sensor in such a way as to force the air to take a longer, more circuitous route up to the sensor element. I believe this "straightens" the flow of the air, and that the real culprit to blown maf sensors is "turbulent" air, not over-oiled filters (although that can definately cause a problem). If you compare the earlier Maf sensor, the air pretty much hits the sesnor body and goes right to the sensor element, so if the air coming off the filter is turbulent and not "laminar" (sheet-like), it will be turbulent when it hits the element in the earliermaf sensors. For what its worth, I have several friends/relatives with 3.6 liter cars and intakes, and none of them have had a problem. With all that said, I did really enjoy the sound, and the car did FEEL faster, even if it was not faster in reality. Good luck.
no problems for me=2000 3.4.
other than a cel when i first did the install; had maf in backwards, turned it around and no problems yet,
1000miles so far.
I've NEVER had problems with a K&N filter but that's likely because I've been smart enough to NEVER install one.
Think about it, more airflow HAS to mean less filtering, and less filtering of the airflow will eventually mean premature (than otherwise) engine failure. And in the interim possibly multiple MAF/IAT sensor modules due to oil contamination.
And think about just exactly what it is you get with a K&N...
The clear majority of the time the throttle butterfly valve is the major restriction to intake airflow. It is only at WOT and at or near the RPM range/peak at which maximum intake airflow occurs.
So, bottom line, what are you buying when you purchase a K&N...!!
NOISE...!
And quite possibly premature engine failure.
I have had my K&N CAI on for at least 5,000 miles & can't attribute any problems to it.
This is on a 1999 C2.
I have asked this question before & never gotten an answer, but how would one know a CEL is specifically due to the intake???
Hey, that's actually a pretty good interpretation. However, I can think about it somewhat differently. What about the analogy of breathing through a straw? As you begin to require more and more air, it gets harder and harder to draw the air through a straw. Replacing the straw with a wider one would rectify the problem immeasurably, right? I just have to imagine that more air across the rev range is always better than less. The trade-off comes as you described above: filtration vs. flow.
so is the CAI strictly a noise maker ONLY? if so, why even bother? change out the exhaust, headers will dramatically change the sound of your pcar but with less consequences......
1. On many vehicles a CAI does provide substantial gains in hp, but without first hand experience on the 996 I won't comment. With the large area of flow already available in the stock configuration and fact that we're dealing with a naturally aspirated engine I can't imagine huge gains.
2. You can achieve higher flow/less pressure drop across a filter without sacrificing filtration by increasing the area available for filtration. I've never seen a comparison of the area with the aftermarkets in comparison to stock.
3. Even in cases of the same area for flow it's possible to increase flow at the expense of filtration if you still feel comfortable with the amount of filtering that is occuring. For example, I ran a K&N filter on my turbo supra for years without issue. My leakdown tests and compression results were nearly equivalent to a new motor and I had 206k miles when it was finally totalled in an accident. Oil analysis along the life of the motor showed low levels of contaminents from unfiltered air so I feel pretty comfortable with the level of filtration with a K&N.
If you increase surface area, then it's win win...equal filtration with more flow. This is why the flat filters were replaced with conical for more flow.
On an earlier car, all I did was remove the airbox and I had a noticeable difference. The airbox was basically forcing air to go through a small portion of the filter.
If anybody has measured the OEM filter, the K&N and the EVO, we can easily calculate.
thanks,
Amir
I've had a K&N 63-series intake on my car since May last year and not a single problem. I've never used the sock over the filter and no, there are no problems with water contamination from rain or even using a pressure washer at the car wash. This has been tested at least 30 times.
wwest,
You get a little more than just noise. I got 22 rwhp (292 rwhp, up from my 270 rwhp baseline) on the dyno from the K&N 63 series intake and a pair of Fabspeed mufflers picked up 2nd hand. I gained 14 rwhp at 4400 rpms and almost 30 rwhp at the redline. I can recognize why you would not understand the gains since you never had one on your car or furthered dynoed to see the difference.
I have personally asked multiple times for someone to post a dyno result of the EVO intake on there car and no one has done so. Until someone does so, we don't know if it will make the same gains or ones higher or lower. The filter does get dirty. I have noticed it needs to be clean and re-oiled about every 3000 miles to keep the performance gains.
c70Pete wrote: "everybody I know with the EVO intake runs "slower" and we all have removed it; it does sound awesome though".
As a matter of curiosity...exactly how did you determine that you were slower with the EVO CAI installed than without it? When you say..."everybody I know"....what exactly does that equate to in terms of actual numbers?? If there were numerous folks who took out the EVO CAI...did they all have some means of measuring the performance drop? How many instances of "slower" did you encounter?
I'm not trying to be argumentative here...I'd just really like to try to quantify your statement in terms of objective criteria.
Chuck
man...a lot of food for thought. I was kinda ready to make the jump and get a CAI...and I was leaning towards the EVO...
I dont know...maybe I will wait a bit longer...its just too iffy on everyside.
I don't think it's the CAI that will cause the CEL per say...it's going to be when there's a bit of water or whatever else that is getting into the MAF and causes the wrong readings. This causes the car to go into limp mode and have the PSM/ABS lights go off. This WILL happen regardless if it's the EVO or K&N.
Alex: You have sold and installed a "Plethora"? I thought you sold and installed the EVO. I couldn't find the Plethora manufacturer
BTW....Alex installed the EVO in mine almost 10K miles ago....nary a problem for over a year now.
Jamie:
I have had both the EVO and the K&N CAI.
The EVO Motorsports CAI is a very high quality system. The K&N CAI is not. Both systems will increase top end horsepower and low end throttle responce. The K&N system is noisier and has a nasty whail when you approach 7000 RPP too quickly, but this might not be a problem with an otherwise unmodified car. The K&N system can also cause any number of problems including installation refitting, rubbing, rattling, water intake, MAF sensor destruction and Check Engine Lights. The EVO system will not.
My engine light came on a few days ago, it's at the dealer now and they say the air flow sensor is blown because of my K&N air filter. They said oil from the filter is typcially the culprit. It's an $800 fix, but luckily my extended warranty will cover it!
I just got the car back. The receipt says the MAF is $462.04. Labor was $75. I asked the service guy why the heck the MAF was so expensive and he simply joked "welcome to Porsche". It's covered under extended warranty so I don't care otherwise I'd never go for it. The dealer is Porsche of Fremont.
I've also a K&N and already exchanged the MAF (BTW: I paid $360 and my Indie promised that this is the price he paid at Porsche - no labor for the change). I pray every day that the car is fine since I've my K&N
so updates every 10 days are OK!
Kidding aside, I think that the K&N is OK. The price difference to the EVO pays for a new MAF that you may or may not need. I don't see any reason why the EVO should be superior; after all it's a pretty simple system - filter and tube.
I had problems with my first generation EVO CAI. It caused the CEL to illuminate. It also caused the car to occasionally stall and surge at constant freeway speed. I replaced my MAF thinking it was the problem. It was not. ArizonaScott told me that there were problems with the first generation EVO CAI. I put on my stock airbox and the problem was solved. I hated to drive my car without the sound of the CAI...it makes more of a difference then my B&B mufflers and headers. I bought a used second gereration EVO CAI from a fellow Rennlister...no more problems and I love the sound.
Can't speak to my 996TT but in my other vehicles...never had a problem. On two vehicles...I got a check engine light for a couple of hours until the ECU "Fixed itself" (Don't know of any other way to describe it) with the new information it was receiving.
I noticed improvement every time with mine and had no problems.
Can you or anyone else elaborate? I just bought a first gen EVO used but haven't put it on. How many people have had this problem and did EVO ever give a reason or a solution to this problem? Thanks
donuts, I would give it a try. If you don't experience any problems, then you should be fine. The problems may have been unique to my non e-gas tiptronic car. It did not take out my MAF. ArizonaScott told me about the problem. You could pm him or call EVO directly. Good luck. Please let me know how it works. I will not sell mine to anybody without disclosing the problems that it caused me.
Ben: You should hear it with the CAI and the MKII muffler conversion....awesome. Gota911 talked me into trying it out....and I really like it.
Mark has the CAI with a Billy Boat muffler....and it sounds really awesome. The CAI amplifies the sound. The only real problem I see is that to get it to sound off, you have to get on it just a tad bit....and I find that the local motorcops are attracted to the sound.....sorta like a moth to the flame!
chuck, i have the evo cai mated to a PSE exhaust that's always on loud mode.
i absolutely dig it, yessir!
btw, what's the proper filter cleaning method on the evo v-flow cai? do i oil it or just vacuum it periodically?
Christ Fletch....you're going to start a run on these things with that clip!
Guys...guys.....it's not quite that loud...
Benjamin:.......The MKII is actually a mod that is designed to emulate the PSE wide open sound....so I would imagine that your exhaust sounds absolutely fantastic.
I know that Loren over on RennTech runs the PSE open also, and I've heard his....it's great!.
I played that clip for my kids yesterday. Two out of three had a glazed look in their eyes, a smile on their face, and a small amount of drool dribbling down their chin. I successfully passed on the gene. I was so proud.
Can't help you with the clip, but I've got the EVO CAI and EVO exhaust. For my own personal taste, it's perfect. Very quiet in the cabin cruising, nice menacing idle, and it howls like a race car at WOT. It's really only then that I can hear the intake's contribution to the symphony. I like the split personality.
