Suggestion

I can say I own a 2000C4 Cab which the only problem has been the requirement to replace the RMS.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have heard some "rumours " that Engine in 966 - 97-01 craches, and therfore you should buy 2002-> Are the engines really so bad ? What is the problem? Must you replease it with a newer one? Did not Porsche do anyting about it - mods?

POST 2Original post

1. No 2. RMS/IMS Oil Leaks tend to be worst case which can be repaired with the new seal. There are a few engines that have slipped piston liners, very bad but not sure if that was just the Boxsters or not but either way I think that was in the 97-98 time period. 3. If it is a bad failure then yes, RMS etc.. no 4. Yes new RMS and IMS seals, Improved the design of the engine over the years etc.. That is what I know so now lets get toolpants or another person who has much better knowledge than me. I can say I own a 2000C4 Cab which the only problem has been the requirement to replace the RMS. Has not leaked any oil now for over 2 years.

POST 4Original post

Rear Main Seal = RMS forget IMS but to replace you have to basically pull out the clutch. Usually this problem will show up with a few drips of oil and most people choose to live with it until it is time for a replacement clutch, at that point it is only about 1 hour of additional work along with about $30 worth of parts. Some people, very rare, get major leaks which would of course require immediate replacement. Lastly, take the car to a Porsche dealer and have them check out whatever car you want, really the 996 is a great car (IMHO) that is far less expensive to operate and maintain than the 993.

POST 5Original post

IMS is probably mis-named. Intermediate Shaft Seal (and end bearing retainer).
