I just installed my camera mount, so that we can have in-car video during the drive.

Turn signals are used for direction changes and passing, with a wave of the left hand to thank the cars that move right and make it easy for motorcyclists to get past.

I said nothing more, or less, I just used more colorful language.

Lambertville, NJ
A spirited drive along the Delaware River and through the quiet back-roads of Eastern PA. Come equipped with a camera, your Porsche and ready for a ride to blow the winter cobwebs off your car.
Meeting point:
Lambertville Municipal Court
25 S Union St, Lambertville, NJ 08530

Arrive: 7:15 to 7:45am
Driver's Meeting 7:45am
Depart: 8am Sharp!
Thanks for taking the lead with this idea, oreganet. These tours have been most enjoyable for me when the roads are rural (with horse farms where possible!). Stately houses are always pleasant scenery, as are forested stretches of road. Ending the trip at a restaurant for lunch would be nice, too, OR starting it at a restaurant for breakfast and some comaraderie.
The date of April 15th works for me, and as for distance, I'd suggest 50 to 60 miles or so.
Everyone is welcome. In fact I realized while I was at the gym this morning that I should cross-post in some of the other forums, to see if the Porsches are interested in hanging out with us 996 guys... if we're lucky the 993 guys might even want to join us.
Yeah, I know, with the combination of NNJR, Schattenbaum, RTR and Central PA PCA, April is a busy month. The weekend of the 28th is the Hershey Swap meet (and typically rains that weekend) and that's a pretty big event also.
I figured that it would be nice just to get whoever we can and go and blow off the cobwebs. Unfortunately it looks like there's no ideal date until late in the year (when I'll arrange another drive before the cars go away for the winter).
I figure that if we can get 10-20 cars (or more!), then it's worthwhile.
BTW, there's no reason why those that are interested cannot also caravan to Hershey.
Where are you planning to meet? I live in MD now but grew up in Philly... I went to Lower Merion HS and Villanova Univ... It would be nice to get back up there for a weekend...
Please post to the 993 & 964 Forums is possible or put on the event calender...
Thanks...
I have now posted on both forums. Thanks for the suggestion.
As for a meeting place, I'm thinking of three places, depending upon turnout and the final route.
1) Wegman's in Allentown (close to the intersection of 476, 78 and 80)
2) Lambertville, NJ
3) Ottsville, PA
I'm open to other suggestions. I guess the only criteria I can think of would be accessibility for those coming from outside the area and a decent sized parking lot.
Absolutely - at the very least we will need a place where food is available.
As for start time, I'm open. If we do a sitdown breakfast (might be hard with a large turnout), then earlier might be better. I figure that a coffee and pastries social might be good for large numbers. We could start in the ballpark of 8.30 to 9am and that would give time to those who are outside the area to show up.
I recognize that sexy 356! Good have you along Tony.
Right now I'm looking at too areas on Yahoo's satellite maps... the area NW of Allentown in the lower Poconos and the are SW of Easton skirting the NJ border.
Excellent! I was actually just coming to ther conclusion that the area skirting the NJ border was probably the most viable route. I'd starting working a route starting in Ottsville and running up past Lake Nockamixon, up towards Hellertown, across to Raubsville, down towards Labertville, then back to Ottsville.
Now obviously, this was done on a map and I've not driven it yet, so have no clue on distances or timing, but the terrain looks quiet and varied and would enable good access to a starting point that those from out of the area could access easily.
Well, looking at the maps it looks like Lambertville works best, I agree - let's set that as the starting point. I've got three places that I see with decent sized parking lots, I'll just have to go over and scout accessibility and availability of food.
The 968 guys in our area like this kind of activity. If you think it's a good idea, I'd be willing to post it on
www.968forums.com
. At their last 968 Celebration in Newtown, they attracted about 20 cars.
I think posting it on the 993 thread was a good idea, by the way.
Sounds good. The more the merrier.
I've just gotta find a parking lot big enough to hold us all for the meet-up. Lambertville is not the biggest town around, so having all these Porsches show up will be quite noticeable.
The main street is kinda quaint and I'm pretty sure I remember a couple of pastry shops.
Looks like the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park parking lot might bde the best place to get together Here's a link to the map.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...05166&t=h&om=1
Turn off Bridge Street onto Lambert Lane - there appears to be a nice long parking lot there that would suit us. I'll have to go and check it out to see that it's suitable. The park website states that there are no parking fees and the park is open from dawn, so we should be all set... just have to see how far away coffee and donuts are.
Lambertville gets my vote especially as it is just around the corner for me
if you need help with logistics or checking out routes just give me a shout and i'll do what i can
Thanks for the offer! If you're just around the corner, then it would be a great help if you could suggest a good parking lot that will fit all the cars that look they're going to show up. I guess the preference was for one need a coffee/pastry shop.
Looking at the map I see three parking lots that might work - the one I linked to above and another one on the corner of George and Bridge street, but I have no clue what the building is that is associated with it.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...94,0.00224&t=h
The other choice is at the Lambertville Inn
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...7,0.004479&t=h
but I think they charge for parking, plus sunday breakfast might be busy. I see another parking lot directly behind it, but again I'm not sure what that building is either.
Let me know your thoughts and if you know whether it would be viable to use the parking lot for start/finish points (depending upon the use of the buildings that own the lots).
I assume that there's still a coffee/pastry shop on bridge street, is that true?
We can confer on routes later on.
I will need to go and check it out to be sure (just driven through Lambertville about an hour ago
). Only issue around there is it is a tourist trap and gets really busy at the weekends and everyone is putting up signs and charging for parking ($15 a day is the going rate!
).
Another close alternative might be Washington Crossing state park which has tons of free parking and is much closer to I-95 for those travelling in. Downside is no cafe but we can always get some volunteers to bring in coffeee and donuts......we have a few weeks to work out the details so I will take a look at both of those.
So the parking lot that appears to be associated with the canal park isn't?
I agree, washington crossing might work if parking in Lamberville is an issue.
Glad to have you along.
Subscribe to this thread and you'll get the updates as we post, then I'll also send out a reminder once we get all the arrangements finalized.
The start/end is the hard part and we mostly have that. Getting the route is the easy part.
Lambertville is a nice spot, and the route along 32/611/209 is a beautiful ride along the Delaware. good to hit it early though , as getting stuck behind a slow poke can be frustrating.
I'm in! Lambertville/New Hope would be great. The wife and I are there often in the spring/summer. The area is an even better end point as there is plenty to do/eat after a good run.
I agree, it's really pretty, but if you get stuck behind someone it's very hard to overtake... For that reason I think I'll get us away from the river fairly quickly and out onto some of the back roads. I've gotten stuck behind slow cars on River road before and it can make for a long journey.
Oreganet, here's an offer of help from someone who also lives in Bucks County and has planned such tours, too. You can reach 94SilverCab at this link:

I saw this posted over in the 986 forum.....Count me in.........
I immagine I'll be looking for ANY excuse to break her out of the garage by that time, and this sounds like a great way to start off....
Microsoft Streets and Trips is a great software tool to utilize in planning fun runs and is much better than Mapquest or Google maps. MS Streets and Maps also has the capability to transfer the info to GPS systems.
Polling the ladies for an upcoming Spring Tour, they prefer a strip map instead of a turn by turn map. I asked the ladies because they are typically navigating.
I am innnnn. I live right near the boader of NNJ but on the NY side. Count Me i'll keep a watch on this thread however PM ME when you guys come up with somthing...
Cool! I couldn't contact him via the board, but if you could PM me his contact info that would be great.
I have some ideas already, but am always ready to others who have got some nice roads that they like.
You may want to contact Don Hollway, webmaster of our region, Central PA to post on the website, maybe work out something with the social chair.
regards,
Steve
Thanks. I was going to send this out to the local PCA regions once we get a meeting point set (stilll fixing on the parking lot).
In fact, this all came about because I wanted to arrange it for the my local region (RTR) and it grew from there... officially, I'm still intending running it as an RTR event, as that will cover us under the PCA insurance and provide us with PCA waivers for the drivers, but everyone is welcome, regardless of if they have PCA membership.
If things continue the way they are Rennlist will be providing a large number of the participants.
968 Guy here that would love to tag along. I just joined Rennlist. Bought a 1993 Black 968 Coupe last May and am always looking for a fun run. Look forward to meeting other Porsche enthusiasts. I will check back for details.
Thanks, Steve (Harleysville, PA)
Count me in.
I'll also be driving down from NYC, so agree, lets a few of us meet in around NYC and drive down together.
Sounds like a fun run..... How awesome to get a big group of porsches together.
No, unfortunately, I cannot help with a map program for a Mac.
Below are two pages from a March fun run I am working on. The first is a strip map (page 3 of 5), and then a turn by turn map (page 5 of 10). These are maps of the same route. Turn by turn maps are typically twice the pages.
BTW, this fun run is dated to run on Sunday, March 25, for any NC Rennlisters reading this.
I live in the Main Line suburbs of Philly and would love to join the group so long as my Cayman S arrives in time (expected late March). If I'm Cayman-less at the time, I guess I tag along in my Cayenne S if that is acceptable.
Damn...I will be in NC at the time. Drive safe out there.
I am not familiar with the area however found a DOT site that provides great information for fun runs. This one is for the area of interest. Click on the left navigational well for itineraries, places of interests, overview, etc..
http://www.byways.org/browse/byways/2463/travel.html
one suggestion,
please arrange some "rest-room stops" along the way.
last time, when i went out drive with the ferrarichat guys, we were lining up on the top of the mountain, begging some construction worker to use their private "smelly" bathroom.
not fun.
Yeah, I've been warned about that. When we do the drive we'll find places for rest-stops and an appropriate place for lunch.
I'm guessing that with this interest level we should keep lunch simple.
I would love some help.
I'm not driving this weekend though. I'll sit down an spend time working on the satelite maps to work out the possibilities (in the directions that I mentioned to you previously), then we'll drive it after that if you're up for it.
So far I've got a rough idea of the roads, but haven't yet gotten into the details to look at things like housing density, busy intersections, etc. Hopefully I'll get that done tomorrow.
I'd love to drive it next weekend, but I'm skiing, so it will have to be after then.
Well, Houston, We have a route.
I've picked out a nice variety of roads. I think that there should be something for everyone in there.
There are a couple of left turns that will take a little time to make, but that will serve to break up the group a little and help space us out enough that we're not all sitting on top of eachother.
Now I have to check the length of the route (to ensure that it's not too long) and make sure that there are appropriate rest stops. Right now I have one rest stop at the half way point, I'll see if there are any others that might work (or are appropriate).
The thing about this route is that it is a true back road drive. We'll have to start off with a full tank of gas, as there will be limited opportunities for refuelling.
SpiderV6 is going to ensure that we have a good parking lot to meet up in and then between the two of us we'll check out the route. Right now I have us all starting an finishing at the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park parking lot in Lamberville, NJ.
Good news.
Left turns can be a problem and you can loose a lot of folks that way. 2-way radios are the best way to "fix" left turn seperation assuming the cars that are ahead actually slow down.
Yeah, I'm aware of that and have tried to minimze the left turns to quiet areas, but there are two in particular that might slow us down on the inbound stretch and I don't think there's much I can do about it to get around them.
The only one I'm a little concerned about would be the left from 611 South onto Geigel Hill Road. I could get around it, but I think that road is worth the wait on the left turn for the fun of the long fast windy road.
I was going to recommend 2-way radios to everyone (if they have them).
Okay, I've just mapped the milage for the route I put together this morning.
How do people feel about at route that weighs in at 72 miles?
Too long? I think it would be a great drive, but if we need to shorten it, then I will.
Let me know your thoughts then I'll work on building in lunch.
Right now I have one rest stop in there at around 42 miles in - let me know if an earlier one is needed.
Will this route be going into PA? If so, I can't drive in PA for restriction purposes
but I can at least meet everyone at the meeting spot. Hopefully the weather gets warm enough for a detail before the meet!
We'll drive north up the Delaware River, then cross into PA, hit the backroads and perform a loop before driving down the Delaware on the PA side and finishing back in Lambertville/New Hope.
Sorry to hear that you cannot cross into PA. I don't know if I dare ask why, but it will be good to see you at the meeting point. Looks like we're going to have a great turn out and the drive will be fun.
I'll probably do the next one to stay on the Jersey side of the river.
Spiderv6 has found us a great starting location:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...m=1&iwloc=addr
Lambertville Municipal Court
25 S. Union Steet Lambertville, NJ 08530
Now, one last question.
What is an appropriate starting time? The reason I ask is that it's sunday and we'll have people driving significant distances to join us.
I originally proposed an 8:30am meeting time getting us on the road by 9am.
Is this reasonable, or do we want to go for 8am on the road by 8.30am?
Feedback is appreciated.
Lambertville Municipal Court
25 S. Union Steet Lambertville, NJ 08530 is the meeting point for the poeple drive over to pa for the run? 8:30 on the road sounds good.
That is correct. I figure that half an hour or so for people to hang out, meet and see eachother's cars would be good, then hit the road. I'll have my camera and hope to take lots of photos.
I favor the eariler schedule of 8/8:30..........the sooner we get away from Lambertville/New Hope, the better. Sundays are very busy days for the two towns. If the weather's nice, you'll have to deal with dozens and dozens of motorcyclists who love New Hope and the surrounding roads!
Generally 30 minutes is not long enough for the meet, gab, pictures.
People will be late - People tend to be tough to get back into the cars (esp if the drove a bit to get to the start point) - Potty breaks - Coffee (or Red Bull
)
I would set a meet time, a departure time, and the "real" time (kept secret of course) we will depart. I think from experience, they are 3 seperate times.
I'll be there any time you set.
Sounds great to me. I'm about 45 minutes from Lambertville and the route looks great. New Hope can be mobbed on a nice spring weekend, hopefully that won't be a choke point.
So, now I just need to keep fingers crossed that my Cayman S arrives in time though I guess the drive would still be fun in my Cayenne.
Excellent! Looks like we have a plan. The concensus seems to be to get out of Lambertville as early as possible and I'm happy with that, as it means that we will not have to factor lunch into the equation.
Let's do this then.
Arrival time of 7:15 - 7:45am
Driver's meeting 7:45am
Depart: 8am
We're all set! Thanks to everyone who has helped with feedback, ideas and site scouting. The job is not done yet, as a couple of you will be helping me do test-drives in the coming weeks, but here it is....

The weather is starting to get nice... my car will be back on the road within the week if the salt continues to wash away.
Hey guys, I have a couple of questions..
1] I am from MD so I am not familiar with the area at all... for me it will be a 145 mi (about 2 hours 40 mins) drive so I would have to go on friday night and stay in a hotel. do you have any suggestions of hotels? I dont need anything fancy, just a clean/affordable place to stay 1 night.
2] how long will we be driving? (the more the better
3]I am bringing my Girlfriend, and she wants to know if any other GF's or wives will be coming...
There are a couple of motels in New Hope. You would be just across the river, 5 minutes from Lambertville. Also some good restaurants along the river if you get there early enough.
I hate to put a damper on this since it's so hard to organize these kinds of meets. I have just PM'd wellardmac to let him know that you REALLY don't want to meet in this location. I live in Lambertivlle and my town is all torn up with road construction on RT 29, some roads are now "one ways" and if you're not familiar with them, you'll get all messed up. Also, the Municipal Court is not what you think of when you think Municipal building. It is right in the middle of the construction zone, has a very small STONE AND DIRT lot, narrow streets leading to it with VERY tight parking if you can find a spot on the street. Please consider a different meeting place. Although I would love to meet here (it would litterally take me under a half of a minute to get there), it's really not a good place to bring your cars to. If you realy want to meet somewhere along the River, why not Washington's Crossing Park? It's about 10 minutes closer to 95 and has lots of lots to meet in.
That is not a supermarket anymore, it hasn't been for at least 15 years! In that location on the corner of 29/Cherry St is a CVS which would probably be an alright location to meet in (and their lot is paved). You would still have to drive though construction on rt 29 if you started south to get there though, and there's a big muddy hole that I hate in the middle of the construction zone right at Deleware ave. But is is still way better than the Municipal building
You are not thinking of our meeting place. I checked it out a couple of weeks ago and it is a brand new paved lot, especially picked for the parking of a bunch of precious cars with picky owners......
We are going to drive the route before it is finalised so don't worry about it yet.....
Okay, now I am 100% sure where it is, it's in the other end of town from the old court building that I was thinking of and it's in the NEW Municipal complex (the old ACME grocery store, in small towns you've got to refer to what things were 30 years ago!). That's at the South end of town so unless you come from rt 202, you don't have to go through any construction or detours. You're right, the parking lot is newly paved...the old lot caved into Swan Creek during some of our flooding. You should be fine meeting in that lot just don't park along the edge of the creek ;o) . When you run the route, let me know! Thanks and sorry for the alarm, I live a nightmare every day in my town trying to get around.
I could definitely be convinced of joining the NYC contigent for a drive down. But whoa is me, are you talking a meet and greet time of 730a on a Sunday? That'll be the only limiting factor if I have a late night of it Sat night. Anyway, if anyone decides on a meeting spot in NNJ/NYC for the departure, i'll try to make it.
Boy, you guys gave me a fright when I started reading this.
One thing we do need confirmation on though is whether we have a clear path from the municipal court to rte 29 north.
I would like to drive the route this weekend, but my wife has to work, so I'm babysitting. Hopefully we'll get to do it next weekend... it will give me another chance to check the maps and ensure that the route works.
Spiderv6, I hope you're ready, this is coming up soon, so it's almost time for us to check that we have a route.
yeah, sorry about that. I was concered about the early start also, but others convinced me that the early start would help us with regard to having a quiet place to meet and having quiet roads generally. Lambertville can get pretty busy, so if we get in and out of there quickly, then we shouldn't too many traffic issues, but later in the day it can get busy, plus the motorcycles hit the same roads that we'll be hitting and that will clog up the flow.
Try this one...
http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwest...%20Information
Best Western New Hope - 5 mins from our starting point. I've never stayed there, but from hte road it looks respectable.
Mid 50s today and the rain is washing away the remnants of snow and all that salt with it! Spring's around the corner and I'm itchin for run. The wife will be there riding shotgun(although she'd prefer to be piloting her 986 instead
). Any way to get the route details in advance for those of us wanting to enter it into their nav?
You know, I just might start lending them out...or renting them. I hate to have them sit for any extended period of time, yet I can only drive one at a time. Considering selling one or two of them(I might just be saying that to appease my wife
).
As for quantity, three are hardly uncommon. There are guys on the 928 board with upwards of 10.
Absolutely! It's going to be quite a sight... we have to get lots of photos of this one.!
We'll post them for all to enjoy.
I'm cranky. I've been hoping all week to get the car out this weekend but the f$%ing DMV hasn't delivered my new tag... I found out a few weeks ago that seasonal plates can only be renewed by mail... 3 weeks and waiting for my tag. I am not a happy camper right now.
As for getting the route in advance, we'll make sure that it's available in time for you to program your nav. We have to check and finalize it before we'll be ready for that... patience grasshopper.
Well, Spinderv6 and I drove the route this morning and I think we have a pretty good track mapped out.
There are a couple of roads that we'll have to take out, as they're were pretty close to dirt tracks, but otherwise we have a nice mix of fast and slow terrain... some nice hill climbs and some nice windy roads thrown in... should be fun. We especially liked the covered bridges
My only complaint was that there was a lot of gravel on the roads today, but hopefully that will get washed away before April 15th.
Well, my Cayman S is on the Eternal Ace which is expected to arrive at the Port of Baltimore on 3/26. If it's on time and PDI and trucking to Philly go smoothly, I should have my Croc in time for the drive.
whoo-hoo! Congrats! I'm hoping to have the time to finish the route this weekend... make a few touch-ups to problem areas that we found on the dry run.
Count me in!!! Also, a friend of mine will also be coming with either his '84 911 Carrera or his '00 Boxster.
Wellardmac, thanks for taking the initiative and planning the drive. You and I talked about planning a drive for April 15 about two months ago but I have been swamped with work for the past few weeks. Anyway, thanks again Wellardmac and I look forward to meeting everyone.
Yup, I remember our conversation. Glad that you can make it.
I'm glad to organize the drive - it was our intial conversation (and others) than convinced me the demand was there. If this goes well, then I'll happily organize others.
Well, my Cayman S was unloaded in Baltimore today and I should have it by the end of the week. I plan on being in Lambertville on the 15th with my new Croc!
Yeah, I am. I've put together a forward and reverse direction drive. If the groups is too big, then we'll split in two and one of us will take one direction and someone else take the other.
Spiderv6 has driven the route with me and knows it. I can also pass the route to you and Tony prior to the day and have you guys as backups to run the opposite direction to me.
I made the final changes to the outbound route this weekend, but still have to make the same changes to the reverse direction.
I'm currently predicting 50-60 cars for this event, so splitting into 2 groups of 30 would work.
One of the other things I'm counting on is that the trip out of Lamberville will also space the group out enough to allow us each enough space to get up some speed. As it's planned now we would all head north out of Lamberville up rte 29, then the group would split in 2 at Stockton - half would cross the bridge there and the other half would cross at Frenchtown.
If this works out well, I'll plan on arranging a couple more before the end of the driving season. If not, I'll have to hide until the end of the driving season.
Interesting idea
I just watched an episode of my Classic car
Lambo/Ferrari weekend at Skytop Lodge in PA
Day 1 Registration and welcome Dinner
Day 2 Car show on the lawn
The weekend is capped off with a driving event at pocono mt raceway

Now, that's a nice idea. Our local PCA chapter does one in May, but the numbers are deliberately limited. If there's interest we could plan for something more extended next time.
This started off as a nice little spring drive for locals, but has been more popular than I expected. Where there's demand, then we can make things happen.
I dont know if you had a chance to follow the link, but they offer a very nice Itinerary. Sort of a la carte depending on your mood and wallet
who knows - I think Im starting to smell "Spring Fling 08'"
...from post #97 of this thread.
The google link will show you the meeting point on the map and one more click will give you the driving directions. I'll post an update when I get home tonight on my thoughts on logistics.
Spring Fling: Sunday April 15th 2007
Lambertville, NJ
A spirited drive along the Delaware River and through the quiet back-roads of Eastern PA. Come equipped with a camera, your Porsche and ready for a ride to blow the winter cobwebs off your car.
Meeting point:
Lambertville Municipal Court
25 S Union St, Lambertville, NJ 08530
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=...om=1&iwloc=addr
Arrive: 7:15 to 7:45am
Driver's Meeting 7:45am
Depart: 8am Sharp!
Okay, other thoughts on logistics. I'll repost these closer to the time, but wanted to get them out there so others can add to the list if I miss anything.
i) Arrive with a full tank of gas. There is a gas station in Lambertville, but I don't know if it's open early on a Sunday (maybe someone can comment), so you should fill up somewhere on the home stretch close to Lambertville.
ii) If you have 2 way radios, bring them, as we'll have them and can all tune into the same channel.
iii) Arriving early is good. Looks like we'll have a good turnout, so getting there early gives you time to grab a coffee and donut from the coffee shop around the corner on Bridge street and stand around talking with others and admiring the cars. I aim to be there nice and early.
iv) bring a camera and take lots of photos. I think I'll also be rigging my camcorder into the car to enjoy the ride.
v) If you have a map that covers upper bucks county, PA, then it will not hurt to bring it. The directions we've pulled together (I think) are pretty good, but on the off-chance that you get separated it will be good to have members of the group with maps.
vii) With this being a large group we may (as mentioned in an earlier post), depending upon final numbers, split the group into two and have them run in opposite directions in order to allow for less bunching and a more enjoyable ride.
viii) The route is designed with fast stretches, as well as slower (windy) fun stretches. These speed differences will naturally spread out the group and allow you space to have fun. The run can be done without a navigator if you stay close to a car with a navigator, but it's best to have someone in the car directing, as I'd hate to see anyone get lost.
ix) The PCA is kindly sponsoring this run, so please come and find me (you know the car by now) when you arrive and sign in. This will get you a copy of the route and have you sign a PCA waiver that covers the organizers in case something bad happens.
x) Have fun, but be careful with your speed until we get out of Lamberville. It is a 25 mph zone until we get out of town and the police do sit there with radar - don't worry, we'll be out of town in a few minutes and I'd hate for us to get a police escort up to the NJ border.
Did I miss anything?
LOL...I decided to randomly check this thread and I suppose that person referred is me.
My driving privledges might be OK again by April 15th but it's cutting it close. We'll see. I'd love to be able to come with my 996.
Okay, we're in the home stretch
- time for those that are definitely attending to post and let me know.
Post if you'll be there and I'll add your name to the list.

I've modified post #1 of this thread to reflect the final details for the event. I'll bump the threads elsewhere to give people a chance to make sure they have it on their calendars.
Took a ride down there today for a bite to eat. I'm a bit concerned with the space in the lot (or lack thereof actually). Logistically, getting in and out of that lot might also be a bit of a challenge.
All doable but possibly quite challenging. The pic below shows the lot at near capacity with about 45 cars.
BTW, who owns the black cab I saw today parked in the driveway across from the parking lot exit?
I understand the concerns, but unfortuntely, I think we'll have to live with them at this point, as the event has been publicized as starting here and it's too late to change (not everyone who will be attending has internet access and will find out in time). As you said, it's doable, but might be tight.
I initially envisaged us getting no more than 50 cars for this. I'm still figuring that we probably will not be too far over that number. If we do exceed that number, then, we'll find a way to squeeze them in, or put them on the street. Sadly, there are very few alternatives in the areas that we could have selected.
Getting us out of Lambertville will require a little patience, but I think it will be okay. It will help serve to split up the group and allow us some space to spread out.
One of the reasons we've starting out to early is get us in and out of Lambertville while it's still quiet.
If we have issues, then we know better next time.
Count this car in. 2006 C4 Cab.
For those thinking there will be too many cars; I think a good percentage bag on the early morning of. (not this car, only 6 miles away!).
I've been watching along and been discussing with the navigator (wife) - we've never done this before but it sounds like a blast. Will this be a first for others ? Coming from Long Island, we would prob leave the night before - need to send the kids to the in-laws - working on it.
Couple of questions/thoughts:
- Besides working together, what are the general guidelines/etiquette ? i.e., passing, speeds ?, I wouldn't want to hold anyone back, nor would I want to be held back.
- The local officers, if they don't already know about this, will know very quickly on that morning.
- What's the route ? I couldn't find a link.
Any LI's going ?
My hope is that we get in and out of Lambertville before we attract too much attention.
We will be in and out of Lambertville in less than 1 hour.
Truth is that they will probably see us leaving the town, as they do strictly enforce the 25mph zone. As long as we're careful to drive responsibly and at the speed limit while they're around, then there will be no issues.
As for passing - pass where it's legal and safe. The route has plenty of passing opportunities.
I have not posted the route. I'm keeping that buttoned down for the reasons that you mentioned above. Those that are coming in from out of town and would like the route in advance can PM me the day before and I'll send it to them to allow them to familiarize themselves with the maps.
..as for other LI's attending - we did have at least one express an interest earlier, but I don't remember who it was and I've not had a confirmation back yet. To make it easier for everyone to find. I'm now posting the confirmed attendees on post #1
1.5hrs north? As I said, I'm aiming to get us out of Lambertville by 8am because of the traffic issues, but if you PM me with an email address the night before the run I'll email you the route and you can catch up to us if you run late.
Let me know when you're a definite and I'll add you onto the list.
I will definitely be there. Got my Midnight Blue Cayman S on Saturday as well as my PCA membership. Looking forward to the rally!
Pic Gallery of my Cayman S
Count me in as well. I'll bring the 996 C2 and the Wife. It sounds great. I'm trying to talk my dad into taking my 944 S. It not fair to take one without the other.
Well, I just got back from driving the route again - couple of comments - OMG, we're in for a good drive! The changes made after SpiderV6 and I drove it have improved things significantly. Additionally, the gravel has now washed away and we have some nice clean roads ready and waiting for us next weekend. I'm glad that I drove it again, as one of the roads we were due to use was closed, so that needed a minor adjustment, but otherwise I think that we'll have a blast.
Here's a summarry of my earlier posts...

Should be a fun day, a good turnout and plenty of photo ops.
Wellardmac - Thanks for all the preparation.
I'm a definate. Pls add me to the list. Have been looking forward to this since Feb.
I'm driving down from NYC. I know there are others commuting from NYC so suggest we meet up early in the city and head down together.

I'm sure it's been asked, and I just missed it, but is this a rain or shine event? The weather, (and I know it's early), is looking towards the rainy side. I don't mind doing it in the rain, but I know others won't like it. Sorry if this has already been covered.
Glad to hear that most are not bothered by the rain.
I'm lookinf forward to seeing you all on Sunday.
We're pretty much ready... I'm printing out copies of the route tomorrow.
Well, just confirmed the in-laws taking the kids so my wife and I will be joining you - our first P-car event. It's a 2 hr drive from Long Island so I think we'll go on Sat night and stay over - there's a bunch of B&B's right in town and across the bridge.
Anyone else going the night before ?
Wellardmac -please add me to the list - unless we're talking major downpours or snow -we'll be there ASSUMING my shop finishes and gets me my car back - had it aligned last week and I'm having the 60k service done - new plugs, oil, brake fluid flush, cam cover seepage fixed (under extended warranty !), Psyched !!
I'll pm for the route since I have zero experience in the area I need to focus on since I will also need to "interpret" my navigator's instructions - i.e., left means right and north means south.
Cool! Glad to have you along! I'm paranoid about making sure the directions are bulletproof. I've driven the route a few times now with different navigators, so I think we're okay.
I'll send a web link out to those that need it once I've put the pages together.
Tony356993 will be at the Best Western New Hope (now the the new Hope Inn) on the night before, so you guys might be able to compare cars if you're in the same place.
Wellardmac - as your in the "area" - how far is Villanova from Lambertville - We can stay at friends if its not too far - otherwise I'm going to reserve a room at one of the B&B's in town.
TRony356993 - how far out is the Best Western ?
Getting pumped ! Asked the wife to replace the batteries in the walkie talkies and steal them from the kids - hope someone cab show us how to use them.
Also, will be bringing my laptop w/ Durametric software if anyone needs it.

Villanova is close relative to where you are, but probably still an hour from Lambertville.
The Best Western is maybe 2 miles from where we're meeting it's across the river in New Hope on Rte 202.
Let's hope for good weather, but I've a feeling that we're in for a good meeting, regardless of if we get wet.
I'm getting exciteed now, as I've not driven the route enough to know the sections where I can put my foot down... there's a really nice hillclimb early on in the route that I'm dying to hit aat speed.
I'm really pleased with how the route has come together... hill climbs, curvy roads, 2 covered bridges, horse farms, long straights for overtaking, parks... you name it, we have it in there - it really worked out nicely.
just a little advice for the folks coming. Not sure how much of our trip will be in PA, I haven't seen the route, but here is the scoop:
Pennsylvania local cops are not allowed to use radar, only the State Police can. So they typically use VASCAR or some other timing device which radar detectors cannot defend against. You'll see lines painted perpendicular to the road, and a cop sitting off to the side will time you between the lines, thus noting your speed, with no warning to you.
I've been on other P car rides where it seemed word traveled out to police in the communities as we made our way through in four groups (I was in the last group) and there were several speed traps setup waiting for people to "hammer down" coming into long straightaways or whatever. I'm all for a spirited drive, but nothing garners the local cop's revenue generating machine like a long string of P-cars rolling throught their town at high speeds.
Very good points! - That's one of the reasons why the route is not available by general distribution - most can get it on Sunday.
Having driven the route a couple of times I'll say this. Expect radar on the NJ side. We do have sone nice fast stretches that are long and straight - your radar detectors should be okay there.
As for PA, the numbered routes are the only ones where you will find state police (with radar) and they are very rare. The locals are the main ones to look out for. I have deliberately designed the route to stay away from population and possible radar traps. Most of the route is free of VASCAR lines, but there are some on the roads with more traffic... don't worry, we're not on those for long.
...just a follow-up thought on this.
At one point you will see that I designed a stretch where we detour around a town on the NJ side - it's longer to do this, but it gets us around the 25mph zone that runs through town. I figure that it will be faster and less ticket prone to detour around, even if it's not immediately obvious why I did it that way.
*************** DATE CHANGED **********************
Run will be this Saturday 4/14 NOT Sunday 4/15 for obvious weather reasons. Hope you can still make the run. All other details remain the same. Hope you can make it.
*****************************************************************
Sorry for the last minute change but Sunday is going to be over an inch of rain and high winds.
Totally understandable. The run would be a complete failure on Sun if the weather turns out be as forecast. I was really looking forward to it, though. So was the wife.
C'est la vie.
BUMBING - just got a call from my indy - was finishing the 60k and just advised me that while they were replacing the left side dash gauge lights, the tach and temp gauges "stopped" working. They need to order new gauges !
He's calling my extended warranty company but either way they won't be functional for the trip and I'm not sure I want to do this long a run without the temp and tach - besides - running a car that's not in perfect running condition takes away from the fun.
Not sure what to do - about the run and the situation - he also told me that he noticed that the leather around the switch plate that they need to pry off to remove the pod is scratched up from someone before them. I told him I never noticed it - I'll know more on this when I pick the car up.
Thanks Tony for bumping this for me!
For all those that PM'ed me, this is not a drill - Yes, the above note is real.
The weather is looking crappy for Sunday and shows no sign of change (much as I'd hoped that it would), so rather than risk having a miserable time on Sunday and half of you not showing up, we decided to change the event to Saturday - same place, same time.
I'm sorry that some of you cannot make it - I was looking forward to meeting you guys and I know that everyone has been excited about this for a while - more the reason that it was a hard call for us to make in changing the day.
I hope that we still see most of you there!
There is one odd thing about this that I would like to bring up. Usually a need to cancel leads to a rescheduling at a later date not an earlier one, allowing people to adjust their schedule as needed. I've attended runs that were organized 2 weeks in advance and saw 50+ cars show up. I have no doubt this run, planned weeks prior would exceed those in size.
Changing a run, planned so well in advance, to a day earlier and doing it two days prior to the event itself, could leave a sour taste in some peoples' mouths. Especially those who had planned on attending from a distance.
Hell, if a week ago, someone mentioned an impromptu run for those who available and then pushed it up a day, no big deal but....perhaps it might have been better to push it back a week or two?
I apologize for the rescheduling, we really didn't want to do it, but the honest reality comes down to if we didn't do it this weekend, then my my schedule didn't allow it to happen at all for the next month, so it's a now or nothing deal. On top of that we had PCA insurance that was scheduled for this weekend. I was prepared to do this as rain or shine, but when the forecast started talking about high winds and torrential rain, then that just made the event unfeasible for Sunday... no point doing it if we all get soaked while signing in and can't spend time talking and enjoying the cars.
I hope that it doens't leave a bad taste in people's mouths, as I have put a lot of work in putting this together and I am as disappointed as you all the the weather for Sunday doesn't look like it's going to cooperate. My hope is that we can have a successful event this weekend that will justify me putting together another one or two events later this year. As I said, this has been a lot of work to pull together (on the part of many people, not just myself and my wife - SpiderV6, Tony356993, others from PCA), but I think that the result will make it worthwhile.
I know that you and others are disappointed in not being able to make it this weekend - we've all been looking forward to it for months, but I really hope that you can make the next one. I'm really unhappy about this also, but I recognise the downside of arranging an event during the fickle weather month of April. I'm thinking June and early November for the next ones... if people are still interested in attending.
Wellardmac,
no hard feelings here.
i totally understand the time and effort one spends on org. those GTG event. and it's tough to make a decision because the weather.
for the future reference, summer morning is better than spring time. it's still too cold to enjoy a morning run fully for cab guys.
No need for an apology as I understand the circumstances perfectly. I could have not have taken it upon myself to organize such a run since my schedule is often inflexible as well, hence why I can no longer attend. I know the effort that you and others have put into it since early Feb. and I just thought it a shame to have it have it possibly diminished a few days before.
Those that will be there on Sat., have a great time. Maybe we can get something together this summer using this run as a template.
It's always helpful if the people who plan these events, and those of us who wish to attend them, are flexible.
Saturday happens to work for me, so I'll certainly be there. I'm lucky to be free on both days. Thanks to all of you who are responsible for putting on this event, and to those who can't make it on Saturday....I'm hoping that you can join us for the next one!
I'm not kidding you guys: I'm glad you rescheduled it because I thought it was Saturday the entire time. I don't know how I got that in my head. Wait, I know...I'm oblivious sometimes. Again, I'll try to make the early drive from NYC tomorrow morning. Thanks for organizing.
Glad to hear that people are still going to show up for us tomorrow - I'm really looking forward to this.
I'm sorry that we lost some people. I feel pretty bad about that, but we will organize another for the summer if you tell me you want to do it.
Count me in. I'm really happy the date has been moved, as I'd much prefer to do this dry.
Wellardmac. I think you've done a sterling job preparing this, and we all know that you can't keep everyone happy all the time, so I'd like to thank you for the effort you've put it. It's really appreciated!
Cheers

There were some references to speeds in earlier posts on this thread. The article on sport bike riding on the street seems apposite to me. I commend it to you for the drive tomorrow, and the rest of your on-street driving as well.
Read it, Learn it, Live it!
THE PACE
BY NICK IENATSCH
.... Racing involves speed, concentration and commitment; the results of a mistake are usually catastrophic because there's little room for error riding at 100 percent. Performance street riding is less intense and further from the absolute limit, but because circumstances are less controlled, mistakes and over aggressiveness can be equally catastrophic. Plenty of roadracers have sworn off street riding. "Too dangerous, too many variables and too easy to get carried away with too much speed," track specialists claim. Adrenaline-addled racers find themselves treating the street like the track, and not surprisingly, they get burned by the police, the laws of physics and the cold, harsh realities of an environment not groomed for ten-tenths riding.
.... But as many of us know, a swift ride down a favorite road may be the finest way to spend a few free hours with a bike we love. And these few hours are best enjoyed riding at The Pace.
.... A year after I joined Motorcyclist staff in 1984, Mitch Boehm was hired. Six months later, The Pace came into being, and we perfected it during the next few months of road testing and weekend fun rides. Now The Pace is part of my life - and a part of the Sunday morning riding group I frequent. The Pace is a street riding technique that not only keeps street riders alive, but thoroughly entertained as well.
THE PACE
.... The Pace focuses on bike control and de-emphasizes outright speed. Full-throttle acceleration and last minute braking aren't part of the program, effectively eliminating the two most common single-bike accident scenarios in sport riding. Cornering momentum is the name of the game, stressing strong, forceful inputs at the handlebar to place the bike correctly at the entrance of the turn and get it flicked in with little wasted time and distance. Since the throttle wasn't slammed open at the exit of the last corner, the next corner doesn't require much, if any, braking. It isn't uncommon to ride with our group and not see a brake light flash all morning.
.... If the brakes are required, the front lever gets squeezed smoothly, quickly and with a good deal of force to set entrance speed in minimum time. Running in on the brakes is tantamount to running off the road, a confession that you're pushing too hard and not getting your entrance speed set early enough because you stayed on the gas too long. Running The Pace decreases your reliance on the throttle and brakes, the two easiest controls to abuse, and hones your ability to judge cornering speed, which is the most thrilling aspect of performance street riding.
YOUR LANE IS YOUR LIMIT
.... Crossing the centerline at any time except during a passing maneuver is intolerable, another sign that you're pushing too hard to keep up. Even when you have a clean line of sight through a left-hand kink, stay to the right of the centerline. Staying on the right side of the centerline is much more challenging than simply straightening every slight corner, and when the whole group is committed to this intelligent practice, the temptation to cheat is eliminated through peer pressure and logic. Though street riding shouldn't be described in racing terms, you can think of your lane as the race track. Leaving your lane is tantamount to a crash.
.... Exact bike control has you using every inch of your lane if the circumstances permit it. In corners with a clear line of sight and no oncoming traffic, enter at the far outside of the corner, turn the bike relatively late in the corner to get a late apex at the far inside of your lane and accelerate out, just brushing the far outside of your lane as your bike stands up. Steer your bike forcefully but smoothly to minimize the transition time. Don't hammer it down because the chassis will bobble slightly as it settles, possibly carrying you off line. Since you haven't charged in on the brakes, you can get the throttle on early, before the apex, which balances and settles your bike for the drive out.
.... More often than not, circumstances do not permit the full use of your lane from yellow line to white line and back again. Blind corners, oncoming traffic and gravel on the road are a few criteria that dictate a more conservative approach, so leave yourself a three or four foot margin for error, especially at the left side of the lane where errant oncoming traffic could prove fatal. Simply narrow your entrance on a blind right-harder and move your apex into your lane three feet on blind left turns in order to stay free of unseen oncoming traffic hogging the centerline. Because you're running at The Pace and not flat out, your controlled entrances offer additional time to deal with unexpected gravel or other debris in your lane; the outside wheel track is usually the cleanest through a dirty corner since a car weights its outside tires most, scrubbing more dirt off the pavement in the process, so aim for that line.
A GOOD LEADER, WILLING FOLLOWERS
.... The street is not a racing environment, and it takes humility, self assurance and self control to keep it that way. The leader sets the pace and monitors his mirrors for signs of raggedness in the ranks that follow, such as tucking in on straights, crossing over the yellow line and hanging off the motorcycle in the corners, If the leader pulls away, he simply slows his straight way speed slightly but continues to enjoy the corners, thus closing the ranks but missing none of the fun. The small group of three or four riders I ride with is so harmonious that the pace is identical no matter who's leading. The lead shifts occasionally with a quick hand sign, but there's never a pass for the lead with an ego on the sleeve. Make no mistake, the riding is spirited and quick in the corners. Anyone with a right arm can hammer down the straights; it's proficiency in the corners that makes The Pace come alive.
.... Following distances are relatively lengthy, with the straightaways taken at more moderate speeds, providing the perfect opportunity to adjust the gaps. Keeping a good distance serves several purposes, besides being safer. Rock chips are minimized, and the police or highway patrol won't suspect a race is in progress. The Pace's style of not hanging off in corners also reduces the appearance of pushing too hard and adds a degree of maturity and sensibility in the eyes of the public and the law. There's a definite challenge to cornering quickly while sitting sedately on your bike.
.... New rider indoctrination takes some time because The Pace develops very high cornering speeds and newcomers want to hammer the throttle on the exits to make up for what they lose at the entrances. Our group slows drastically when a new rider joins the ranks because our technique of moderate straightaway speed and no brakes can suck the unaware into a corner too fast, creating the most common single bike accident. With a new rider learning The Pace behind you, tap your brake lightly well before the turn to alert him and make sure he understands there's no pressure to stay with the group.
.... There's plenty of ongoing communication during The Pace. A foot off the peg indicates debris in the road, and all slowing or turning intentions are signaled in advance with the left hand and arm. Turn signals are used for direction changes and passing, with a wave of the left hand to thank the cars that move right and make it easy for motorcyclists to get past. Since you don't have a death grip on the handlebar, your left hand is also free to wave to oncoming riders, a fading courtesy that we'd like to see return. If you're getting the idea The Pace is a relaxing, noncompetitive way to ride with a group, you are right.
RELAX AND FLICK IT
.... I'd rather spend a Sunday in the mountains riding at The Pace than a Sunday at the racetrack, it's that enjoyable. Countersteering is the name of the game; smooth, forceful steering input at the handlebar relayed to the tires' contact patches through a rigid sport bike frame. Riding at The Pace is certainly what bike manufacturers had in mind when sport bikes evolved to the street.
.... But the machine isn't the most important aspect of running The Pace because you can do it on anything capable of getting through a corner. Attitude is The Pace's most important aspect: realizing the friend ahead of you isn't a competitor, respecting his right to lead the group occasionally and giving him credit for his riding skills. You must have the maturity to limit your straightaway speeds to allow the group to stay in touch and the sense to realize that racetrack tactics such as late braking and full throttle runs to redline will alienate the public and police and possibly introduce you to the unforgiving laws of gravity. When the group arrives at the destination after running The Pace, no one feels outgunned or is left with the feeling he must prove himself on the return run. If you've got some thing to prove, get on a racetrack.
.... The racetrack measures your speed with a stop watch and direct competition, welcoming your aggression and gritty resolve to be the best. Performance street riding's only yardstick is the amount of enjoyment gained, not lap times, finishing position or competitors beaten. The differences are huge but not always remembered by riders who haven't discovered The Pace's cornering pureness and group involvement. Hammer on the racetrack. Pace yourself on the street.

Well after a little finagling with my wife, I am still able to attend the rally on Saturday! I'm extremely anxious as I just got my Cayman S two weeks ago and have had virtually zero chances of driving it. I travel on business extensively and was really looking forward to the drive on Sunday and felt bad all week as the weather forecast emerged. Now with the change to Saturday and the blessing from my wife, I fully anticipate arriving in Lambertville tomorrow bright and early. See you all then!
Question: I'm coming up 95N from Philly. Am I better off going up 32 to New Hope and then crossing the bridge in to Lambertville or going up 29 to Lambertville. Streets & Trips reports that there is construction on 29 between 546 and Valley Road.
Unfortunately I cannot make the run tomorrow. My work and family schedule are locked in at this point.
I hope everyone who attends has a great time.
P.S. Don't forget to take lots of pics!!!
Thanks for the comments everyone.
We'll take lots of pics for you and post them when we get back!
I can't comment on the rte 29 vs 32. It might be equal either way, but I've heard that rte 29 is a mess in places.
I am 5 or 6 miles away from Lambertville and the sun is setting on clear skies right now. Forecast for 8am tomorrow is blue skies and sunshine.
Game on
You can help me get everyone signed in... I'll recruit you, SpiderV6 and Tony to help do sign-ins if I can. If we're all helping out, then we should all have time to mingle and take photos.
Thanks Tony356993. I've had the Cayman for just two weeks now and have not really had any opportunities to drive it, so I am especially excited about tomorrow's drive. It's also my first time in a rally such as this. Really looking forward to meeting everyone and to be swimming in Porsches!
I did my absolute best to talk him into it, but he's afraid that he won't be able to "keep up" with the 911 boys.
I'm bummed about it too. So I guess it'll just have to sit this round. Maybe once he sees how these rallies are he might feel a bit more confident. That's my plan anyway. It somehow seems wrong that I have to beg people to take a Porsche to a rally doesn't it?? I figured people would jump at the chance to join.
Anyway, I can't wait to see your car tomorrow. I'm seriously considering headling covers like the ones you have, I have yet to see any in person. Thanks again for heading this up. It's much appreciated.
It's going to be great to finally meet everyone. This has been a blast to organize and The payback comes in getting us all together and getting the photographs... I'll be bringing lots of memory cards for my camera.
I liked that posting.
Our last drive together was the warmup for this and taught me what not to do.
This will be a fun one... hill climbs, curves, straights... I'm excited just thinking about it.
Looking forward to meeting all that show. The Mrs.'s and I are in Lambertsville looking out over the Delaware 2 blocks from the meeting spot. We actually have room looking down over the car in this huge empty lot at the Lambertsville Station Inn. Just had diner and drinks, now have a nice wifi connection , life is good - car ran great for the 90 mile run down here - except that most of my dash is non-operable - thanks to my indy shop for trying to change the gauge bulbs !
Very windy, mild temps, clear skies for now and LOTS AND LOTS of Officers on Rt 202 and in Town !!!! Be AWARE. Just getting on 202 from NY - one is sitting behind a retail store and the pick up guy is 1/2 block away at the gas station for an easy pick !! - X50 did notify me - Ka
Going to look over the route somehat and crash
Likewise
Oh, no. Say it isn't so.... I'm just back into town and thought I'd check on tomorrow's drive. It looks like a beautiful morning, I'm jealous!
Totally understand why it was changed, hopefully I'll get in on the next one. Hope it's a great drive for everyone!
Sorry you didn't make it. Many thanks to all those that did. we had a blast. I'll post photos later once I've gotten them off my camera.
I'm still running on rush from all those curvy roads.
Very nice shots. The drive was great guys!! I guess my only gripe would be it was an hour too short.
It seemed to be over pretty quickly. The roads were great, the scenery was great. We should do it again, very soon.
I agree, I could have gone for another hour. The problem I had was the most tend to be unenthusiastic for drives more than 70 miles, so I tried to keep it as close to that as I could. We can do a longer one next time.
Glad you enjoyed the drive - great to meet everyone!
Let's aim for another in June or July. I'm open to suggestions on the location and roads, so get your ideas in and we'll make it happen.
One drove by the parking lot when we were assembling and several of us groaned expecting trouble, but he kept on going without stopping. We had no problems during the drive at all, not even in NJ.
Wow - What a great run today!
And was really nice to meet you all.
Wellardmac / Wayne ... excellent route, and thanks again for organising.
Here's a pic we took through the windscreen.
I'll try post a vid link later on.
Cheers

Phil - nice shot - can you send me the full size pic?
I'll PM the address.
I can't wait to see the video... the guys that took the en-route photos also did video for us and they said the sound of the cars going though the covered bridges was aamzing.

Wayne - post your pics this way and you can do multiple pics in one post. It looks like you guys had a great time with a very good turnout. If you hadn't been so far away, I would have considered joining you.

Wow, that must have been a million bucks worth of cars in that lot! Nice looking scenic backdrop too!
What was the average speed? Was it more a slow procession, or what?
Thanks tim - I guess I goofd somehow on the multiple upload process.
Andy, yes, it was not an inexpensive collection of cars - I was joking with friends about it and commenting that these photographs will be a nice collection of expensive images
I can't tell you what the average speed was, as I was at the front, but reports from the back and middle said that there was a good fast pace and people were not sitting on top of each other - I was happy to hear about that. I was trying from the front to get a pace that spread people out without us losing anyone and I think we did okay. People were raving about the adrenaline rush of the fast curvy roads, so i think we got it right. My speed varied between 50 and enough to get the spoiler up (
), depending upon the stretch. It was quite a sight to see in my rear view mirror.
We did a stop at a local lake and everyone was buzzing when they got out of their cars, it was a good sight.
Tim, so do these photos help appease the photo addiction for the weekend?
It was cool to see and I can't beleive the photos that we got. I love Ppashley's tree shot... that was a nice stretch of road.
We would have loved to have you with us - pity that it's so far for you to travel.
Yep, I think we were 27 or 28 cars, so well past the million i guess!
It wasn't a slow procession. There were several opportunities to, erm, stretch our legs, shall we say
... I hope you also got a chance to get your spoiler up.
I got a kick out of gunning it to get things moving for a little while.
Jay's 968 could really move - it was nice to see him overtaking on Mountain View Road. Scared the life out of me to see him coming forward at high speed just before our turn - I thought he was going to miss it.
Okay, after consultation with The Boss, how does late July sound for another run?
That would give us a few months to invent another route and space things out nicely before another run in November for the end of the year.
Thoughts?
I hope you're joking. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm up for next weekend!!
I understand people have busy schedules, but would it be too much to do one a month?? I know any opportunity I get, I'm going.
I'm in favor of more get together, absolutely - although, I'll need help to put them together. Do I have volunteers?
Coming up with the route and test-driving this event it took several full weekends of work - probably around 5 or 6 weekends. Doing that again for a new route will take a while. Once we have a few runs done, then it's not a big deal, but right now I'm putting these together from scratch.
A few people said that they might have access to route invented by other clubs, so we might be able to get hold of those and they would be a good stop-gap until we've written our own.
I'm game if others are.
Right now I've just added Saturday July 28th (rain date 29th) to my calendar for the next one - that I can say we'll do for certain. If we're doing another one sooner, then let's get to work.
Whew..........it was a challenging route this morning with good weather and eye-catching scenery that made it hard to keep my eyes on the road.
Because I was near the front, I couldn't see how everyone else was driving. However, I can comment on two of the cars that were near me. The lone 968 driver distinguished himself in a car that had a slight power disadvantage - but Jay was smiling from ear to ear as he kept pace with the faster 911s in both the tight and open sections, and I noticed his silly grin when he passed me on a fast stretch of road.
And the major surprise of the day was how competitive Tony's beautiful 356B cabriolet was. It was a tribute to the ability of the car and, more so, of Tony's driving skills. We could easily out-accelerate him, but in most other respects, he competed quite impressively for a 46 year-old car. When he was behind me, I watched with admiration as he took the corners, seemingly with ease.
Wellardmac, we were all rewarded today with a well-planned, well-executed, enjoyable event. Thank-you!
Like spiderv6 said, that route was awesome, why make a new one so soon, perhaps a new one for later in the year. I could go on that run a couple more times. As briskly as we were moving, I'm sure we didn't get to catch all that beautiful scenery, and it would be nice to have a couple more shots at that!
I'm in favor of keeping that route, and just driving!
Thanks guys - I'm cool with that. We can reuse the route, although my plan was to reuse next spring, then come up with new routes for the summer and fall.
Jay mentioned that he was going to pass me a covered bridges route and I thought that might be the good basis for a summer drive. I was thinking that we could do a fall drive in the mountains for the fall foliage.
If there's motivation to rerun this route it would give those that missed this run a chance to join us.
As for Jay's driving - he has an incredible car and handled it well. When he put his footdown and started over taking I thought he was going to overshoot the entrance to the park - I put my turn indicator on way early to let him know that we were turning soon and that he needed to get back in lane - it was pretty funny to watch.
yeah, he buzzed past me at one point and I wondered what was going on
I'll definitely look over some maps during a couple of beers and help map out a new route with you, count me in.
I think a re-run in the next month or so for those that missed it plus those that want to do it again would have much the same turn out as today.........
almost couldn't bear to open this thread to look at the pics, I'm so bummed I missed it! I'm all for doing it "again", since that would give me a chance. Sounds like a fantastic route, and it was a beautiful collection of cars. I'm ready any time!
To ease my pain, I put the car up on stands and started my poor-man's PSE mod today. At least on the next run, I'll make a little nicer noise!
How's this for therapy...
Holy Cow Todd - that's pretty significant surgery!
I felt bad for those that got excited about attending, then couldn't make it. I hope that they're not unsubscribed from this thread already... I'll start another thread and link to it from here to get the discussion going
All,
You will see that I've start a new thread to open up the topic for repeat drives. The link is here:

Well, I was planning on posting last night but crashed - drove a total of 320 miles in 24 hours - not a lot on a straight run but tiring enough.
We had a great time - route, cars and drivers were all terrific. Looking forward to another as soon as possible !
Wellardmac - once again, great meeting you (and all others), great work and thanks for all the effort. I'm also amazed at how fast you can post pics and video. I need to resize all mine - here's a few - will do so soon - any quick tricks ?
(Tony) On a side note, I can confirm my soon to be 3 year old son is a natural auto enthusiast. I was reviewing the pics last night with him sitting on my lap - When the following pic came up, I asked him - Which one do you want ? After a real look at the screen and a curious look on his face - he pointed and said this one daddy, I like this one - pointing to the '61 Roadster. In my view, that's the first and correct answer for a true enthusiast - my wife who was watching said "Oh my g-d" your creating a monster !!"
Anyway - if these don't come out I'll repost later.
Thanks again to eveyone.
Ramp - your son is on the right path!. It is sometimes more fun to drive a slow car fast then a fast car slow.
VGM - Thanks! When you are driving a 90hp car with all you guys and the speeds that we were going, it's all about momentum, NOT over braking & using as much of road (safely) as you can.
Looks like we picked the right day yesterday, eh?
Excellent! Well, I'm thinking of one of two possibilities for the next run... a covered bridge tour... try to do as many of the 12 as possible, or a coal country drive --- nice hill climbs, more curvy roads and straights where we can have fun. Instead of bringing people down here again we would meet somewhere off of I-80.
As I said, this would mean making up a route from scratch, but it's doable. Any help that I can get would be gratefully received.
I would be very much up for a covered bridge tour.
I also think the early start is essential. I had to be up at 5am to get there for yesterday's start, but its clearly a good idea to get open, clear roads.
If we can drive similar back country roads for a covered bridges tour, that would be awesome.
Cheers

I'm very much in support of a Covered Bridges tour as well. Any kind of tour will do. I didn't get many good shots, but I put a few up on my webshots. I'm going to attempt a pic here, and if it doesn't work, I'll just put a link to my webshots so you can enjoy even more Porsche pix.

Nice pics! I particularly like the one of the back end of Chris' GT3 when we were parked waiting for the trailer to get out of the way.
I've Jerry - I emailed Jay to ask him for a copy of his covered bridge tour - if I can get that I can use it as a basis for a modified tour for us.
Wayne - HUGE thanks to you and the team who organized this drive. I had an absolutely incredible time. Being my first drive of this nature, and my first real outing in my Cayman, I don't think I could have asked for anything more. I'm still feeling thrill even now. The route was sensational and really gave me a feel for what my Cayman S can do. I learned that the car makes me a much better driver than I probably am and that it can do so much more than I allowed. Being able to follow a group of veteran drivers encouraged me to push myself moreso than if I were driving the route alone. Now that I've had a taste, I want more. Paint chips be damned, it's about the drive not the gloss!
What a great group of people and what a beautiful collection of Porsches! Like others, I was amazed at what that gorgeous 356 cab was able to do. What a car and clearly a skilled driver.
Next time, I hope to convince my wife to come as a navigator. The GPS helps see upcoming street names but trying to grip the turn sheet, remember which line you're on, and reading it while driving at pace can be a little unnerving. I also need to invest in a better digital camera. Some of the shots folks have posted using a long lens are terrific.
Again, thanks for welcoming me and my Cayman. Looking forward to the next drive!
EDIT: Need to make sure I'm past the 2000 mile mark next time so I can actually rev the Croc past 4200rpm. Can't wait to experience the howl at 6500rpm.
bummed i missed this .. pix looks great ... hopefully i'll hit the next ride.
any of you guys heading up to Hershey in 2 weeks? maybe get a ride together for that. .
I'm so upset I missed this
the weather seemed perfect!!
The cars look great
I just pushed too many "To-Do's" to Saturday getting ready for the storm
Next time
I'm the last car in the first picture (Lapis Blue C4S). It was a great drive, great cars and great meeting everyone.
Even though it took me an hour and a half to get to the meeting place (left my house in North Jersey at 5:45am to be there by 7:15am) if was well worth it.
Thanks again Wellemac for organizing the event, they were awesome driving roads.
I will definitely by at Limerock for the Hemmings show on Sunday May 27th, hopefully I'll see some of you there.
Glenn
Thanks for the compliments on my Cayman S! Means a lot coming from folks who have Porsches like yours. I spent a lot of time pouring over the Order Guide to make sure I got it just right. I knew it would be a real looker (to me and my wife anyway) but am stunned by how well it performed on that drive, especially considering my skill level. Hopefully on the next drive I'll actually be able to rev it past 4200rpm.
Be warned though... Porsches are awesome cars with rock solid stability... right up until they lose it and put you in a ditch.
The newer cars are not as jugular as the older cars used to be... the older cars used to tell you that they were going to rip your throat out and let you respond. The new cars lull you into a false sense of security, then rip your throat out when you least expect it.
Too much coffee today, Wayne? Remember, we're driving on the street at speeds well within the design limits of the road. These cars all have limits WAY above that. If there is a problem, it'll be with "civilians" on the street, and in our way.
Chris is dead on.
These cars (mid or rear engine) are amazing and way beyond most of our skill set. Yes, they can bite you on the street but usually only if the driver is being a JA or does something really stupid.
I have had many students on the track with Boxsters and Cayman S's and mid engine cars are so great on the track but they do give the driver less warning when they are about to let go. That being said, that should not happen on the street. When in doubt, give a little more gas and unwind (don't pinch) the wheel a bit and your P-car will be happy and safe. That is the key to a rear engine car and I'm sure it will work for mid engine also.
Where's my covered bridge pics?
Did I say anything about the street?
Tony echoed my exact sentiment when he said "they do give the driver less warning when they are about to let go". I said nothing more, or less, I just used more colorful language.
You can lose it on the street, but it would take bad driving and poor conditions to do so.
In the UK when I was growing up (think more challenging roads and higher speed limits) it was not uncommon for a 911 to be the death of it's driver... I was telling someone at the drive on saturday that they used to say that the Carrera was the biggest cause of death for UK stockbrokers.
Okay, you have my commitment to a reverse direction run in May (26th?) and a covered bridge tour in July (29th?)
We'll call the may drive Fling Spring and the July run Duck and Cover.
Sign up here to help out and I'll hand out assignments.
Okay, the photos have been updated.
http://web.mac.com/wellardmac/iWeb/S...ngFlingII.html
Contains awesome new photos from PPashley (thank you!!!)
and as promised
http://web.mac.com/wellardmac/iWeb/S...gFlingIII.html
contains the shots done by my friend and her husband - lots of repetition, but you can guarantee that your car was photographed - some nice photos in there! I love the bridge and photos that take advantage of the reflections in the highly polished paintwork.
Thanks! Consider yourself recruited!
Although, I think that May might be a problem. I remembered that we have family in town on the weekend of the 19th, so that's out and we have a significant PCA conflct on the 26th, so May might now happen. I'm checking into it and will get back to people.
Certainly, we can do July, but I knew that May was a nightmare month for me already, these latest conflicts are not a surprise.
New Threads started!
