Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Changed plugs and coils - and was frustrated that the little inspection camera I had was too big.
Leading evidence: 'Replace plugs and coils - and was frustrated' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check with potential rebuilds if they take disassembled engines' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just a heads-up, before you start taking your engine apart, check with potential rebuilds if they take disassembled engines.

AOS was okay (not specifically related, just wanted to test).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi .. not sure if I am posting in proper place .. IοΏ½m sure if not allowed or topic is gone over & over already I will be told ..
New Porsche 996 owner
Picked up a 2002 911 non turbo
Car came with a tapping noise from what sounds like bank 2
Has a P0335 code - crankshaft position sensor
Car also does not have any power at 4,500 rpm
Not too sure about Porsche .. owned many VW I suppose I am wondering if any members are in the NY NJ area that could work on the car or shoot me some advice where to start on fixing .. THANKS
Can you record the sound at idle from beneath the car on the passenger side for 15 or so seconds without moving the recording device and post here?
...and Welcome!
Ok viewed the recording. First I must disqualify myself: I am NOT a Porsche nor an engine expert and didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. However this sound is familiar to me and can be prevalent in these cars. It sounds like bore scoring to me and hopefully those with more knowledge will chime in with a more educated opinion. I have been through this issue with my car, if it is indeed bore scoring. To verify or eliminate the possibility the cylinder bores must be viewed with a boroscope. This can be accomplished by dropping the oil pan and scoping the cylinder walls from the bottom. If the scoring is bad enough it might also be seen by scoping through the spark plug holes.
Good luck with your diagnosis...
Probably time for a long day of watching a οΏ½focus on bore scoring.οΏ½ ItοΏ½s a popular Sunday past time amongst fellow M9X owners.
HereοΏ½s a recent thread I started after not being able to sleep at night:

One of the things Jake is right about is denial. When you hear that noise you look for anything else it can be. You logically point out that some of the other symptoms can be caused by other problems, which is true. "it smokes more out of one side" well, the oil gets dumped back in on one side. "It burns more oil" More than what? I haven't had it that long - Porsche even allows for what I would have considered too much "It makes a noise that sounds like a collapsed lifter, but it never is" that's not true I read a post about a guy with a collapsed lifter. Even a loose spark plug or a an exhaust gasket. Yes, it could be one of those things - but they are far less common, an Occam's Razor is your guiding principle.
How do I know? Mine started tapping a couple of months ago. I've only had it since November, and it started in February. I watched the whole Flat6 series. With a stethoscope, I couldn't pinpoint the sound...and that gave me hope. In fact, it sounded so much like an exhaust sound I thought it was soething in the sport exhaust. The tapping was actually loudest with the stethoscope on a muffler!.. but there was nothing there. Not driving too much, I wasn't that worried. For father's day I got a manometer and an electronic stethoscope. AOS was okay (not specifically related, just wanted to test). But I still couldn't pinpoint the sound. Changed plugs and coils - and was frustrated that the little inspection camera I had was too big. Then on July 1st I got my oil sample analysis from Blackstone. Bless their souls, it started with "Mark, we wish we had better news" Super high aluminum and silicon content - on the 996 this points to piston scuffing.
To make what was suddenly becoming a long story much shorter - I took it on Friday for a borescope, and the pics show significant scoring on 4,5,6 - the pics were as bad as any examples I've seen.
So the planning starts. I've gone through a few of the rebuild threads, and I don't think I want to tackle the bottom end. I'll take out the engine and strip it, then depending on who I get, they'll either get like that, or I'll take of the heads and get them cleaned up too. When I see the meticulous balancing and the techniques and gadgets for getting the wrist pin clips in I just think it gets to be too much. At the same time, I think - it's just more steps - and I can send stuff for balancing if I want.
I'm in Toronto and everything seems to be way more expensive than the U.S. options - in fact, most things seem to get sent down there for some or all of it.
In short - it sounds like mine. Get someone to look at it. Rather than hoping or denying, find out for sure.
Did you get a "good deal" on the car? I'm hoping the tapping sound helped you get the price down.
Just a heads-up, before you start taking your engine apart, check with potential rebuilds if they take disassembled engines. Some don't.
I presume the first comment was for the author of this thread - mine wasn't making the noise when I got it. As far as disassembly, thank you, that is a significant part of my planning.
