Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Pick the highest reported level and use that method to check from now on.
Leading evidence: 'Check from now' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check from now' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Then, check when the engine is hot (after driving for 25 mins), and waiting 2 mins for the oil to drain a little.

My 99 doesn't have any issues filled to the very top, but most on here would recommend keeping the oil someplace in the middle.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just added some oil. I waited a few minutes like the manual suggests. The gauge showed full except the last bar. The dipstick showed a little past the full mark. I went to check it about 30 minutes later and digital gauge bars were solid and the dipstick was still just over the full mark, maybe between 8th and 16th of an inch. Will I be ok operating?
What year is your car?
You might be OK. Others have noted that anything past full results in oil smoke out the tailpipe, depending on how you drive. My 99 doesn't have any issues filled to the very top, but most on here would recommend keeping the oil someplace in the middle. Overfilling can actually be quite bad.
Also, you will get different levels depending on how you check. I would check in the morning, stone cold, note the measurement. Then, check when the engine is hot (after driving for 25 mins), and waiting 2 mins for the oil to drain a little. Note the measurement. Pick the highest reported level and use that method to check from now on. My cars highest measurement is hot, not cold, so I try to never go above full when hot.
Always check on a flat surface. Otherwise, the levels will be skewed higher or lower.
There is major differences between reading an oil gage of the early and later style.

The oil level vs Ltrs can also be affected if you have a deep sump installed.
Im also keeping the level at the mid mark while using a later style gage.
I would remove some oil.
Interesting, did I read something that said the original oil capacity was modified due to people complaining about blue smoke when hard cornering or something?
TOO MUCH OIL! The "dots" on the stick end are NOT the full and low marks. The full and low marks are the grooves before the shouldered out parts of the stick. I would take some oil out as mentioned above by dumping the filter can and remeasuring to get the level below the full groove. The guy that reconstructed my engine says "the oil should be in the middle of the stick stone cold and level. Add oil when the level reaches the the low mark on the stick and only add enough to bring the level back to the middle of the stick,"
Lots of opinions on this, search around the forum for your fill of em. Personally, I run it at half way up the dipstick and dont pay attention to the dash display. The logic for that level is the M96 holds a tremendous amount of oil compared to other similar sized engines, so even the low side of full (bottom of the dipstick) is more than plenty unless you track or spend a lot of time at triple digit speeds going around sharp curves.
Oh, Im sure someone already thought of this, but instead of dropping the filter, it was easier to use an oil extraction pump and suck it out of the dipstick tube.
