Probably concluded on mileage alone because it can't be inspected without being taken out and disassembled, so a shop will say it needs it regardless.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just looking for some opinions on this topic. Have been trying to sell my 99 C2 with 103k for $20k. Had one serious buyer who wanted PPI done which he paid for. Verdict came back that it needed approx $5500 worth of work. IMS/RMS/Clutch(I haven't noticed any issues with the clutch and I drive it daily and have opted not to do the IMS since this has the dual row with very low failure rate), some suspension work, new belts, etc... So the question becomes is it worth throwing $5500 if I choose to do it all into a 22 year old car or do I just sell it for less(maybe $15k) or trade it in ? If I spend the $5500, will that really help me to sell it for close to $20k ?

POST 2Original post

Any buyer will feel more comfortable if maintenance items are addressed, regardless of car. It's "one less thing" they have to deal with and would likely get you closer to that $20k number if the right person sees it. In it's current state I don't see why you couldn't get $17k-$19k, but it may take some time for the right person to come along, especially with Covid in the air. Trade in, I'd be surprised if they gave you $13k, for the obvious reason of dealerships trade in valuations lean more in their favor so they have a somewhat guaranteed profit. Really boils down to whats acceptable for YOU, each avenue has their own pros/cons.

POST 3Original post

At 103K miles and needing some deferred maintenance you are better off taking less money and avoiding potential issues that the shop might find while "they are in there". Why spend $5500+ to get $20K when you can probably sell for $15 to $17K doing nothing and be money ahead?

put it on BAT or cars and bids (or what ever the new one is called) with a reserve, and let the market tell you what it's really worth. You will get pennies on the dollar for "enthusiast" upgrades like the IMS. So if you are selling I'd suggest not doing those and just eat it as part of the depreciation curve. You need a clutch to drive the rest are statistical anomalies based on production numbers. I believe 60k is the life span of a clutch. Also, how did they conclude it needed an IMS?

Probably concluded on mileage alone because it can't be inspected without being taken out and disassembled, so a shop will say it needs it regardless. Pennies on the dollar might be true to an extent, but some of the maintenance can be done within around $3k-$4k range. Being over 100k miles will be the point of some people wanting or not wanting to purchase. Some like lower mileage, some light more since it was actually driven. There's no hard answers on a 996's worth, as with many sports cars. It could be worth $15k one day, and another day $19k because someone who really wanted it saw it. $18k for a 72K mile Tip on BAT; https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...11-carrera-88/ $20k for 95K mile 6MT w/ IMS and others addressed; https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...11-carrera-87/ $22,750, 67K mile 6MT w/ IMS and others addressed; https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...-carrera-4-17/ There's a lot to factor. Mileage, maintenance, options, service receipts, etc. It's not a cut and dry situation selling or buying these cars.

IMS I agree leave it. Why did they say change the RMS? Is it leaking? Why did they say the clutch is bad? This sounds like the "while you're in there" PPI. Belt that's easy. Suspension...what's wrong? It is a 21 yo car. No-one should expect brand new. I agree it may take time especially in the frozen north.

There has been some "wetness" around the RMS for years. Never been an issue, and unless the car sits for more than a week, never a drop of oil on the garage floor. The shop has been trying to get me to do the IMS for years and I keep telling them I don't think it's needed. I may need a new clutch at some point, but I don't ride the clutch and have had zero slippage issues. The suspension, absolutely there are a few items which need to be done(a couple of clunks on the front, the right side coffin arm needs replacement), but that's a relatively low cost item.
