The fact that the previous owner "already replaced the motor" is a bit telling/alarming...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This latch replacement fixed this problem and allowed my alarm system to blink the direction lights when locking or unlocking the car.
Hi All,
First off let me say Happy new year to everybody, I know its a little late but I havent been on here for a while.
Apologies if this problem has been covered but I couldnt find anything the same as what has happened to me.
Last week my drivers door wouldnt open, the window dropped but the handle wasnt engaging the lock.
So I took the door card off and found that two parts had come apart from each other. I reconnected them and put the door back together.
But now when I open the door (from the outside only) the window drops allowing me to open the door but when I release the handle and the window goes straight back up as if the door was closed . It works fine when I open the door from the inside.
Now Im not a complete idiot (not complete anyway) and I realise that its linked to the recent door handle issue, but I cant think of what I missed.
If anyone has any tips for me to fix this I would be very very grateful.
Thanks
Jack
If the other door is working fine then take the inside off and compare. You shouldnt see a differance but may do. I believe that there are 7 micro switches in each door. If you unlock via the key and dont open the door. The micro switch locks the door again after a minute or so. If you lift the handle outside the window drops via another micro switch. When you let the handle go when the door is open, another switch keeps the window down. From the inside another micro switch works the window drop and the same outside switch holds the window down slightly as you release the handle. There is probably another which controls the air bag.

Here is another good thred for you to check

Good luck
The microswitch for the external handle is behaving as it should. The fact that it thinks the door is closed when you release the handle suggests to me the link between the exterior handle and the locking mechanism is not correct. When you reassemble the exterior handle/ lock you need to make sure the receiver slot in the lock is in the vertical position. There is only small deflections either way to lock or unlock the door ( if you listen carefully you can hear the microswitches when you slowly move the receiver slot ). If you make sure the slot is vertical then all should be good.
Sounds like you need to adjust your latch assembly up a couple of mm. I had the same issue and that's what it was. Read this thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...or-opened.html
+2 seems the door doesn't know if current status is open or close. I was asking if he moved it since can be tricky to get into the right spot. Had that issue when repairing my microswitch #4 in the latch assembly.
Thanks for all your replies.
Would the latch need adjusted even though it is fine when it's opened from inside?
As I didn't touch the latch assembly
I will check out all the links and get the door card off again to see if everything is in order.
Thanks again guys
*UPDATE*
Thanks again for all your links they proved very useful!
I was opening the door to see if I could here the micro switch engaging and I discovered that if i pull the handle very very slowly it works fine.
so when I get home I’ll pull the door card off and see if I can see what’s happening.

Jack;
If this can be of any help!
The only link between the external handle and the door lock or latch is a short approx 4 mm diam. metal rod threaded that fits from the top via a slot into a plastic rod of a larger diameter (?). Once the metal rod is inserted into the plastic rod, there is a plastic slider that slides over the area where the metal rod is inside the plastic rod.
Since your interior handle works well via a bowden cable directly linked to the door lock but your external handle does not, what might be happening is that the slider might have backed off or the fitment of the metal rod is getting loose within the plastic rod even with the slider in the right place. That would explain why your door is working correctly when you pull the handle smoothly.
I posted a picture of that link between the external handle and the door lock, but since this is my 1st upload at this site, I'm not sure if this will work.
I replaced the passenger door lock/latch this weekend to fix a window that would not lower when opening the door or climb back up when closing the door. This latch replacement fixed this problem and allowed my alarm system to blink the direction lights when locking or unlocking the car.
The lock is only held by 2 triple-square (8mm) black fasteners torqued at 20 nm and there is hardly any adjustment to the position of that lock as no adjustment is necessary.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the detailed reply.
I'm going to have a good look when I get some clear weather.
For the moment I am just opening the car as if I'm in slow motion!
Thanks again for everybody's input. I will update once I identify and fix the problem.
Jack
I'm currently in the process of replacing my defective door latch system and I am not able to remove the part shown in the picture.
How do you remove that thing?
Thanks a lot!!!
The black ring around the part shown slides back towards the inside of the door, once moved it exposes the threads of the metal part, you can then push this up and it will pop out of the plastic arm. To refit, you simply line it up and press it back in and slide the plastic ring back up over it.
I had the problem with the window going back up once the outside handle is released, which typically means the door latch micro switch is damaged. I found this was NOT the case. The micro switch is actuated by following the shaped portion of the latch mechanism. This is metal covered in plastic. I found the plastic had worn away and frayed. The micro switch has a small grove in actuating arm which is exposed, the frayed plastic was causing it to get stuck in the door closed position (also pushing the switch body down). I cut away the frayed plastic along the edge of the latch which contacts the micro switch, refitted and all is well again. Worth keeping in mind, I suspect this condition is the cause of the micro switches being damaged. So if you fix/replace/rebuild, check this too!
I have recently purchased a 2003 Porsche Boxster 986 from a one owner. Neither the left or right windows will roll down either from the outside or inside. The window fuse is okay. I replaced the top latch microswitch, and even thou the convertible top works correctly, neither window moves. The original owner replaced the left door window motor to no avail. The key will unlock and lock the driver's door. It is hard for me to believe that both windows have failed at the same time. I hate to go thru the process of replacing both inner and outer door micrswitches which can get to be expensive. Is there a relay or something more plausible that is causing this?
[email removed]
There are no relays for the windows, only fuses. Check your fuse diagram and see if there is more than one fuse for the windows (I only have a fuse diagram for my 99). Pop the window switches out of the console and check for 12V power, and ground. Anything else not work?
Hmmm, as you already know, electrical problems can be a nightmare Could be one or any of several things: wiring, either/both of the switches themselves, or potentially a relay (although I'm not sure if the windows are on relays). The fact that the previous owner "already replaced the motor" is a bit telling/alarming... Did you ask him/her why they just assumed it was the motor? Are you trying to fix this yourself? If so, there are resources like wiring diagrams etc. online - just google them. I would a) try putting power directly to the window motor - if that works > try putting power directly to the switch, if that works, you know you're not getting power to the switch etc. If you don't want to get into the nuts and bolts make sure you find someone who is an expert troubleshooter in Porsche electrical systems (word of mouth referrals are the best). Good luck, & Please post back with results (good or bad) !
Okay. The reason I said check the fuse diagram and check ALL the fuses for the power windows is because there are multiple fuses. Attached is a fuse diagram for my 99. I can clearly see at least 3 fuses that are for the power windows B6, D1, C3 (note your fuse diagram for your 2003 may be different):
