Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Going to do a Giac reflash..... what's the price on these guys..... i was told it was $995 and then on top of it, a $50 reflash fee?????? is that right? what's the cost of the $995 then? there's no chip, it's just a reflash of our chip......... what's everyone's experience who had this done......? thanks

POST 3Original post

I think retail price is $995. I'm skeptical that you'll feel a big difference for an additional 10 whp. Traffic on this forum is kind of slow (compared to other forums). Maybe give this question some time. I'm sure there are other guys who have gotten the GIAC flash.

POST 6Original post

A friend and I did it and then reversed it. We felt no difference! I was told that there may be as many as a dozen different ROW codes that can be used. Maybe we didn't get the "right" code after some experimentation. The only thing we noticed is that you are able to start the car without first engaging the clutch. Once we reversed the flash we, again, had to engagge the clutch...which, I preferred. So, in 3 words: a big waste. If you go through with it, I'd like to hear about for sure.

POST 7Original post

The 02 and later cars clearly do not benifit from after market chips.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

well mine is a 99 cab.... so i think i might feel a little push..... in regards to searchy.... i've been reading like crazy on this issue and it's a split bt prosche owners..... many say that it's the best bag for your buck and some say it's not worth it.... my main question pose here was, it's on sale at GMG for $895, but then the owner told me that he's going to charge another $50 for reflashing..... what the heck is the $895 for....? there's nothing that is given to me, just a flash on my own car chip.....so just wanted to know what experience in prices everyone is experiencing.......

POST 9Original post

I think GMG probably means that if you wanted to bring it back to stock, you'd need to bring it back to take the software off (and maybe thats the $50)? $895 for the GIAC is actually a really good price - for a non turbo 996, I don't think they offer their "reloader" which gives you the ability to switch software yourself.... So did you aleady get the software loaded? If so did you notice any diff? As most have said, it sounds like the 3.4L engines get a better benefit from the software.....

POST 10Original post

I got mine done over a year ago. It's a 99, and I can't honestly say I felt much if anything. I don't think it's the best bang for your buck, I'd rather spend just a little more and get aftermarket mufflers, where you gain a little HP, but get a great sound out of the deal as well. If I had it to do all over again, I'd go with the mufflers, just my 2 cents though.

POST 11Original post

You can't feel 15whp by the seat of pants with any type of mod. Go side by side with a stock 996 of the same caliber and you will witness the difference.

POST 12Original post

I think GMG was going to design a full exhaust to go along with the GIAC flash. You may ask them about that to see what type of change in power they claim with that combination.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

good idea.... i have headers and exhaust already on my car.... so my next step would be to get the flash, or high flow...... GMG also has this pleneum that they're trying to push.... they did not state specifically how many hp it would produce, but it sounds like a sound idea........ i'm really thinking about the high flow, but it's so damn exdpensive..... $2100 for a set of cargraphics .... i hear they're 200 cel and wont set of the CEL on our car....... does anyone know anything about the high flow, which works well and a little bit more affordable?

POST 14Original post

With high flow you get a little louder with your exhaust. When you installed a 200 cel they increase the tolerance in your software so you don't get CEL. If you live in Cal, 200 cel will be tough to passed emission. With full exhaust syst. (headers, cat, mufflers) the car run smoother. If you want to pay high $$$ you can take Cargraphics or go lower $$$ with Fabspeed, GHL, AP. I had GiAC and Revo flashes. And reversed to stock, I don't notice much different.

POST 15Original post

FWIW, (and I've posted this before). I have and '01 with GHLs and the K&N Intake and I tried the Revo flash for 5 hours and clearly felt a difference with the reprogram and (unfortunately) after it expired. My plan is to have it programmed permanently in the spring. HTH Jeff

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

why are there so many differences in opinion when it comes to the reflash? does it take more then $1000 for something to work or not work?

POST 17Original post

Some people just can't help but to be right even if they've never had a reflash. It's sort of like magazine racers who run around quoting 0-60 times from magazines and turning their readings into fact even though people on the streets have proven the opposite.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They don't do REVO flashes for the 99 can do they? i think it begins with the 00 and above.......

POST 19Original post

Porsche-Smile - Sorry I am of no help but I got to say, your writing style on Rennlist is how I write on myspace, lol

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks tippy..... i try my best..... Now i need to open a myspace account....

POST 21Original post

I have dynno results of my 99 car which acutually lost horsepower vs. going with a ROW factory program. GIAC seems to be hit or miss, make sure to dyno your car before and after or ask the shop to put a performance guarantee in writing.

POST 22Original post

FWIW,..there are a LOT of different files for these cars and its imperative that the person doing the re-flash loads the correct one. Failure to do so will result in no performance gains. We've done a LOT of 3.4 litre 996 flashes and these have been quite successful. The 3.6's didn't offer the same level of performance gains since Porsche's stock software became more aggressive; they are quick learners. The 3.6 & 3.8 cars do benefit from programming changes to the DBW throttle and its lazy throttle response.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

so what are the typically gains you've seen with the giac upgrades for the 3.4? i have headers and exhaust as well......
