Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It drives beautifully, but whilst the gearbox was out I thought I'd have the clutch replaced - OPC says it looks worn; but the flywheel looks fine and he is recommended not to change it.

Leading evidence: 'Replace opc says it looks worn;' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ims and rms' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend not' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

The flywheel has passed their test (it is at the OPC) and the problem is both the IMS and RMS - and for good measure, it seems the chain tensioner is also at fault.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Many of the components are very difficult to access normally .In your case both the test and any repair would be quick and inexpensive.

How many of you would replace the flywheel along with the clutch?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there,
My well maintained 996 C4S has done 85K miles and is currently in with warranty covered oil leak issue.
It drives beautifully, but whilst the gearbox was out I thought I'd have the clutch replaced - OPC says it looks worn; but the flywheel looks fine and he is recommended not to change it.
How many of you would replace the flywheel along with the clutch?
Thanks in advance, I am a bif fan of the site.
Your mechanic should follow the Porsche factory procedure for determining if the DMF is worn below spec. If it is then replace it, if it is not then keep running with your existing flywheel. When replacing my clutch at roughly the same mileage, my flywheel was well in spec and I did not replace it.
The service manual spells this out - have your shop follow it and you'll be good to go.
Its a dual mass flywheel that has a spring mechanism that allows the two pieces to rotate independently do a degree. There is a test to determine if the degree at which they can deviate is within spec. Other than that, there is the issue of wear on the friction surface itself. Some people have had dual mass flywheels resurfaced with no issue - other people claim it will cause vibration and that dual mass flywheels can't be resurfaced.
For what its worth - I took my flywheel into a local machine shop and he said he could resurface it without issue. However, I opted to replace it completely as the thought of having to remove the transmission again wasn't worth the potential savings. You can get an identical one for about $800 from Pelican Parts I believe.
It really all depends on the condition of the flywheel and your tolerance for expenses now vs. potential expenses in the future.
On a side note - since they're removed the transmission I'm assuming the oil leak was rear main seal? If so, they're removed the flywheel as well - reinstallation requires the use of new bolts to install the flywheel as they're one time use.
Cheers
Charlie
Thankyou both for your fast replies.

I am going to leave the flywheel alone I think and get the clutch changed.
Thanks again guys, I am grateful for your input.

There are other "while you are in there" items to consider. For example a quick vacuum test of the SAI system. Many of the components are very difficult to access normally .In your case both the test and any repair would be quick and inexpensive.
Did they 'read' Deviations ? Chain pads may be worn - so much easier now.
