Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking at a 1999 996 C2 as a daily driver. Car has approximately 50,000 miles on it. Car appears to be in great shape, and I intend to have a PPI performed by a reputable dealer. The seller (a small independent lot) does not have maintenance records on the car. Any areas I should be particularly concerned about? How are these cars as daily drivers? The dealer is offering a Great Lakes 4 year/100,000 mile extended warranty for $1260 plus surcharge, but indicates that Great Lakes puts a $3,000 surcharge on 911's. Anybody know if this is true? Are these warranties from Great Lakes or others available independent of the selling dealer? Car is listed at $35,000, but I can probably get it for $32,000. Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated.

POST 2Original post

I'd research on its warranty history. Bring VIN to any dealer and they can pull it for u. Also, do a carfax. U don't want a car w history. Carfax will tell u where the car was driven. Call up the dealers in the area for service (not warranty) history. Lastly, spend $250 to have it inspected by a Porsche dealer or specialist. For research, look up RMS, tranmission, coolant tank leak, MAF issues. These are common on all 996. Repeat RMS is bad.

POST 3Original post

I agree with the PPI, but most dealers do not have access to or will not give you service records. Apparently they do not have a nationwide system, so unless you know which dealership the car came from and was serviced at, you will have to rely on the PPI. As for daily drivers, they are great. Good luck

POST 4Original post

As far as daily driving, it's great except rear tires wear out quickly (12k-17k mi) and are very costly (about $400 each installed). This is bc it's rear heavy and also a RWD car. Other than that, car is very reliable, comfortable and relatively efficient (17-21 mpg). GL w your search!
