The clutch admittedly is a little stiff compared to a few other cars I've driven recently (including a 996TT), but it operates just fine and I haven't had any issues with clutching/changing gears.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have an 02 996 with 28,000 miles. I recently took it in to get new tires and the mechanic said while driving it, he noticed that the clutch was a little stiff and he thought it should be replaced?? Does this make sense? The clutch admittedly is a little stiff compared to a few other cars I've driven recently (including a 996TT), but it operates just fine and I haven't had any issues with clutching/changing gears. In fact, it never even crossed my mind as an issue until the mechanic brought it up. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Ask him if it is the clutch cable first or the pedal assy needing lube.

POST 3Original post

The is no clutch cable. Have the system hydrauics bleed.

POST 4Original post

It means your clutch is worn. It could go 500 miles more or it could go 15k miles more. Around 30k seems to be when they start to feel stiff for the average owner.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So given the "symptom" (stiff clutch, but nothing else) should I go ahead and replace it or wait for some other sign before doing anything?

POST 7Original post

Wait. Go drive an old American Muscle Car for a few hours and then come back and tell us your clutch is still stiiff.

POST 8Original post

My clutch takes some muscle to depress, but it works fine. I'm waiting until it REALLY needs to be replaced - when it's worn out.

POST 9Original post

check clutch fluid to make sure it's not low. i'd not worry about it until you find it slipping.

POST 10Original post

as the clutch wears the, the angle of the pressure plate fingers becomes more steep and it takes more effort to release the clutch. stiff feeling is usualy a good indicator that its on its last legs. I would say drive it till it starts slipping but make sure you have cell phone just in case
