More than likely I'll replace the pads with stock pads, but for now it's better than using my feet ala the Flintstones.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

30 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just replaced my front pads & rotors recently. Could someone please tell me how to bed them in properly? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Take the car out and get to an area where you can accelerate and brake repeatedly. Get the car up to 50 or so and then evenly apply the brakes until almost stopped. DO NOT keep you foot on the brake pedal when you are stopped (unless you HAVE to). Repeat several times, inceasing the pressure you apply to the brake pedal. A couple of hard braking applications will complete the break in. Now enjoy the car. You can also drive the car while applying the barkes lightly while driving. Keep doing this for several miles increasing the pressure to the pedal. The idea is to get the brakes hot and seated without letting the pads sit still against the rotor. No further break in is necessary.

POST 3Original post

Stoptech, a maker of aftermarket brakes, has a really good procedure that I've used a number of times. Their website is www.stoptech.com and the direct link is http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp...contents.shtml

POST 4Original post

I do try to bed my brakes in "properly" but in reality does all this really matter? I mean there are millions of drivers who don't follow any procedure and get along just fine?

POST 5Original post

Do 20-0 mph, 30-0, 40-0, 50-0 about 3-4x each. Do gradual braking -- not slamming on brakes.

POST 6Original post

Just click your heals three times and say over and over......bedded brakes, bedded brakes, bedded brakes, bedded brakes, bedded brakes, .............

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good one Dell! Thanks for the help guys. That Stoptech article was great. Off I go. Bedded brakes, bedded brakes, bedded brakes....I hope this works.

POST 8Original post

fletch.....glad you caught my dry humor. in all seriousness, the stoptech article is great and there are procedures for both street pads and track pads. Very important to bed them for optimal and efficient braking. Now go click your heels!

POST 9Original post

Intentional bedding is over rated, principally because when done incorrectly, you can ruin the new rotors. I know this from experience.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dell, I have been lurking here for about three years. I didn't want to join until I could actually drive my Porsche and not be embarassed to show pictures of it. I have always enjoyed your sense of humor. This site has kept me entertained and encouraged while putting together a project car that I never thought I would finish. Thanks! Gretch, I always appreciate the opportunity to learn from someone else's mistakes rather than just my own. Sorry that happened to you.

POST 12Original post

fortunately it was not done to a P car. I put new zimmermans on all around on both of mine and let the first day of normal driving be my "bedding in" procedure. It worked just fine, with no issues going on a combined 50k plus miles now. I got a bit too enthusastic on another vehicle and toasted two sets of front rotors before I learned......fortunately for that vehicle the parts are dirt cheap.

POST 13Original post

LiveNupeCo makes a brake bedding kit that works really well. Considering that improperly bedded brake pads could cause your car to flip, roll, and explode the $2,000 retail price is pretty reasonable. POST 15Original post

I just received my new rotors, and I have Pagid orange brakes... I'm having a local tech do the install, I think I need him to drill a hole in the pads for the sensor. Anything else I should having him do since he's in there?

POST 16Original post

Sure, have him put the orange's in the box and drop in some street pads. Getting enough temp into those pads for everyday street driving just isn't something that will happen. Well, for most.

POST 17Original post

Dell, you haven't driven to work with me have you? Actually suncoast porsche didn't have the stock C4S pads so they got me the Pagid... I really, really needed them - like a month ago - very bad. So the Pagid's are better than steel on steel.

POST 18Original post

Time to enjoy the looks as you come to a stop squealling like school bus since you can't possibly get those suckers up to temp.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I followed Stoptech's bedding procedure a couple of hours ago. Not only was it fun...It worked great. No squealing. Thanks for the help guys. Oh, I forgot, I also clicked my heels twice.

My suggestion is to get them drunk first...try some cheep wine and then start talking dirty to them. Let them know that this is not a one night stand and you will call them tomorrow.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mark, I laughed my butt off. Thanks, I really needed that since I just came back from a driving lesson with my daughter in the Porsche. I only had to grab the wheel once. That wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, my brakes are now squealing like a school bus. I used Mintex red box pads with generous amounts of anti-squeal goo on the back of the pads. Apparently they didn't respect me in the morning...I guess I should have called.

POST 24Original post

Yeah, get ready for the squeal with the pagid oranges. I put them on last weekend for this weekends track events, and can't wait to take them off again when I get back. But stopping power, if you have better roads than my 2 mile commute, you'll love them.

POST 25Original post

Bedding those squeally pads is easy.... just play the dueling banjos scene from "Deliverance" and tell 'em to squeal like a pig. http://www.wavsource.com/movies/deliverance.htm

POST 26Original post

More than likely I'll replace the pads with stock pads, but for now it's better than using my feet ala the Flintstones.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Help please! All kidding aside, I followed stoptech's proceedure. They are now squealing so bad that I'm going to have to fix the problem. Any suggestions? I started with new oem rotors, new Mintex red pads and a generous amount of CRC disc brake quiet goo on the back. What next? Any advice would be appreciated. The brakes have less than 60 miles on them and no ridge on the rotor yet. I can pull the pads in about ten minutes...should I reapply the goo or sand paper the pads?

POST 28Original post

Man, I spend the entire day installing brakes and disk, fortunately it was warm outside! It took about 4 hours for me and a buddy of mine to get his Rotora Brake kit changed out. We would have finished sooner if he had purchased a 10mm socket instead of a 10mm Allen/hex bar. Following that ordeal, one of his pistons wouldn't go back in. The funny thing is, I went to his house to have support since today is the first time I've changed pads on a Porsche, but it took me only 20 minutes per wheel (front pad and disc replacement). If I would've done the work at my house I might have attempted to install the GHL's that were waiting at the door once I arrived home.

POST 29Original post

Are the Red pads high performance? If so, they will probably always squeal when they're cold. If not, sand with paper or touch the disk with a grinder wheel a couple times. This has helped me get rid of the squeal on other vehicles.

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

DC Porsche, It was nice of you to help your buddy out. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to do a project without the right tool. Isn't the brake system on our car awesome! I couldn't believe how easy it was to swap rotors & pads. The Mintex red pads were supposed to be a little better then stock...not race pads. All I can think of to do is sand the pads & add more goo. Thanks for the advice. Good luck with the GHLs. I hope you like the sound. They definately sound bettter with aftermarket pipes.
