Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I posted something like this in the air-cooled forum, but I wanted to see some good examples of the 996s out there that are running strong. It seems that for some reason other forums have been bashing the 996. Maybe it was the rare examples of engine failures. In any event, let's prove that these cars can run just as reliably as the others. No, I don't own a 996, but I've driven one and was very impressed...
Rules: If you have an original car, original engine, please say so. If your engine has been replaced or rebuilt, please specify the mileage before rebuild, but you can obviously still post the total mileage. After all, there is a difference between a car with 90,000 miles and an engine rebuild versus a car with 80,000 miles on the original engine. But both are respectable!
someone call up pierre, he managed to put 250,000kms on original turbo engine/turbos/clutch...
me, i'm a girly man with only 48000kms, but in my defence...a lot of those were track kms
Occasionally it feels a little crunchy if I change quickly from 2nd to 3rd. Usually that only happens if the car is cold, or twice when I've changed my mind mid-shift and gone 1st->3rd with the revs badly mismatched having originally planned to go to 2nd. I guess the lesson is to avoid changing my mind mid-shift!
As for the shift when cold, it feels just like an old VW GTi I had, which had a very crunchy shift in the mornings after 120k miles
I started to get a little nervous after reading all the "new engine after 30K and 3 rd new engine" posts but now I feel a little better. Its obvious you have to run these to make them happy!
99 C2 62K on original motor
Mine has lots of miles - still running very strong!
I think the odo is in miles, but I changed the digital readouts to Km. (USA car running in Canada)
133,000 Miles
going on 94K on original motor. supercharged at 73K. recent compression and leak down test came out normal and no RMS leak
replaced clutch master and slave cylinders, clutch, lwf and coolant reservoir tank.
52K Miles, all original but for the ignition switch. I say drive 'em like they're going to be outlawed tomorrow and BB is going to come and take them away.
'o2 c2 53k, replaced alternator
at 52k, just replaced front brakes and tires all around. No other problems except the oil sending unit which I've been told is an easy fix and will be worked on soon
2000 996, 38K no significant problems and no leaks. Not a lot of miles but a daily driver for 7 years (short commute for the first 5 years). I'm on my third windshield due to rock damage on the Houston freeways.
2002 C2 coupe with 125,700 miles
I'm the original owner and it still has the original engine, transmission and clutch. No RMS problems.
(But, I just found out I'm going to need a new engine sometime soon because of a broken variocam solenoid and worn valve guides. Sometimes it runs like crap and feels like it is only firing one bank of cylinders . . . )

105,665 miles on my 2000 carrera everything original except for two o2 sensors and a maf. i need to get a new clutch soon too other then that shes been perfect. (knock on wood)
The valve guides being worn reminds me of the old air-cooled engine problems. Can you just rebuild the top end, or do you need to get a whole new engine?
100,000 miles on my 99 C2. All original and running strong - doesn't burn even one drop of oil between changes. I drive it pretty fast and don't putz around like a grandma.
I could just rebuild the top end but, with the solenoid problem and who knows what else (piston rings?), it makes more sense to get a new engine and get another 100,000 miles with no problems.
The ironic thing is that everyone thought the water cooled engines would last longer than the old air cooled engines (based on a 30 year old design) because the technology/engineering should be much better now. But, it appears the opposite is true.
Oh yeah, I had the water pump disintegrate at about 94,000 miles.

I bought my 99 with 58,000 & no 6th gear.
Put in a used tranny & going strong now with 73,000 miles ~14 months later.
PO put in new clutch at 50,000 miles to try to fix tranny problem.
I did have to replace the coolant tank, but no biggie.
Loving it!
