I wrestled with the same choices and ultimately found a nice gem of a 99 996 Aero with all of the aftermarket goodies already installed on the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

31 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I've been looking for a 993 and may have found one....but/and found a '99 996 Yellow/black 6spd 18's 47k miles which appears in really nice condition (ppi tbd ofcourse). 2 owner , clean carfax. asking $30k obo. I know I have to decide 993/996 etc, but forgetting the 993 for a sec, how does above deal sound (I'm in NE). Pros/cons with 99's (built '98), etc ? Thx!

POST 2Original post

not sure if you have seen a thread by Gatorone2001 ...also debating b/w a 993 and 996 (sorry, cannot post links yet) Confession: I am in a similar situation. Was all set on 993 ('95-'98) but had a change of heart (and mind) after reading above. I will let the experts chime in about the price (as I am still a noob here and to Porsches). Best of luck!

POST 4Original post

It was an available option only on the 1999 model year Carreras. After that it was replaced by PSM.

POST 6Original post

price depends on where its coming from and what options and the outcome of the PPI. If a dealer with some warranty pretty good price, but private you may have room to negotiate. If you need a place to get good PPI, Farnbacher Loles in Danbury is one of the best, and dealers in Greenwich and Fairfield. I am in ffld county so if you need a shop recommendation let me know area, maybe I can help, but no real expert myself....

POST 7Original post

It also came standard on the 40th anniversary 996.

POST 8Original post

Sold a 95 993 for a 02 996,could not be happier

POST 9Original post

996s are indestructible. I have a fair amount of track time in mine and its rock solid as the day it was new. With proper maintenance they can last a long time.

POST 10Original post

996 interior is more modern without being too over done (ala Lexus)

POST 11Original post

PSM was standard in 99 on the C4, and it is very likely it has PSM, most dealers did opt for it, as it is defeatable

POST 12Original post

I have a 99 996 with 67k and it is a dream. Would not trade this car for any 993 with similar additions. I added evoms intake and custom exhaust and it looks sleek, sounds mean and is rock solid.

POST 13Original post

I was refering to LSD, which was an option on the '99 996 and came standard on the 40th Anniversary 996.

POST 14Original post

I debated the same issue and went with the 99 996. Haven't regreted it once. I love driving my car.

POST 15Original post

Just came from where you are,I love my 996,way more pleasurable to drive than the 993.

POST 16Original post

i think it cost more to fix or maintain the 993 doesn't it? as long as we are on prices, let's keep the maintainace a reality thing...... if they're the same price initial cost, how much more will it cost to own a 993 vs 996 in the long run?

POST 18Original post

yes, the 993 is not a real porsche....... and for that matter, none were better than the '99 996!

POST 20Original post

I wrestled with the same choices and ultimately found a nice gem of a 99 996 Aero with all of the aftermarket goodies already installed on the car. I have had it since September and it is a joy to drive and own. So far the car has been great. I also lucked out as my car has the LSD option. Pete

POST 22Original post

Choi? where are you?? and you thought resale for the 996 was bad, ouch.

POST 23Original post

Trolling for trolls, that's a new tactic Dall.....er.... I mean....."Killa"....

POST 24Original post

I don't regret getting my 99 over a newer car or older 993 for even a second. LSD, Factory Aero and full leather were my must-have options and I got them all in the car that I ended up with. It did however take me a few months to locate the right car. Andy

POST 26Original post

I use to own an 993 and now I have a 996. It is my daily driver and I would not trade back. I reall, really love the 996. It is very good daily driver and still brings big smiles to my face every time I get on it.

POST 27Original post

LOVE my 99 - solid as a rock and totally reliable. 100k original miles and doesn't burn or drip a drop of oil. ^ Love the Car M Fig - I'm looking at some new wheels and those look beautiful on your red Carrera (still on 17" here).

POST 28Original post

LSD is a "limited slip differential" and PSM is an electronic stability program (Porsche stability management).

POST 30Original post

Another + for the 996. I absolutely love my 99 996. As for maintenance, I don't have a 993 but I do own a 3.2. Maintenance for that car is about the same but I do the valve adjustements, etc. myself. Both are rock solid and will probably outlast me.

POST 31Original post

Pros and cons: Pros: 996, great car, has already been hit hard by depreciation Cons: It's yellow. YELLOW? Geez man, what are you thinking? Everyone will see you. Ricers, rednecks, cops, even the occasional soccer mom yakking on the phone will all take notice of you. Subtle, this car is not. I had a yellow Z06 Corvette before my 996. The worst thing about it (other than being a Chevy) was that bugs were attracted to the color. So I'm out washing or drying the damn thing, and flies and bugs and all think it's a fookin' flower and get all over the car. Seriously. Other than that, the whole 993 thing really cracks me up - a lot of those cars are selling for more than a 996 but if you look closely, the ones that bring the big bucks are low mileage garage queens. Get a car that has actually been driven (47K on a '99 is a good compromise). You can tell by my board name that I used to have a 993, and I prefer the 996 over it in every respect except for the engine sound. If you can afford to buy a newer car, get a 2002 or newer model, but if you can't, the '99 should do you just fine. Michael
