I swear I remember somewhere that you can change the oil reminder to come on at 5k intervals.

I mostly use it for cam deviation and fan testing at every oil change, but I think the tool paid for itself just by resetting the air bag lights.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I'm quite excited because I finally got a Durametric. I've never had so much data and diagnostic capability so easily available - its like being a kid in a candy store - yet there is nothing wrong with my car. It took about 5 minutes to check over-revs, engine hours and camshaft deviation. Only 1 type 2, and it was 1500 engine hours ago, deviations were -0.78 and -1.39. So.... now what? I guess hoping for a problem to solve isn't wise. Does anyone have suggestions of useful or interesting things to do with a Durametric? I'm going to go for a drive soon and monitor cylinder misfires - maybe that will give me an excuse to replace the spark plugs or coil packs.

POST 2Original post

LOL! A cool thing to do is test the radiators fans. Using the Durametric you can activate each fan separately, on both speeds. I mostly use it for cam deviation and fan testing at every oil change, but I think the tool paid for itself just by resetting the air bag lights. Those suckers come on every time you remove the seats, door panels or steering wheel.

POST 5Original post

Now you stick it in your laptop bag so you always have it with you. What? Not everyone carries their Durametric around?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did just order a new battery for my old windows laptop so I can actually take it around with me! Actually, its just so I can log data during actual driving. Does the 996 have any type of service interval reminder? I swear I remember somewhere that you can change the oil reminder to come on at 5k intervals. I've yet to get any maintenance reminder yet though.

POST 8Original post

The Porsche 996 manual floating around the for free has extensive data about the nominal values of many sensors on the 911. Check for a vacuum leak. Look at the fuel trims and ignition timing. They should be pretty close to the specs in the manual. Now remove the oil filler cap and see how the values change. Another diagnostic is the cat condition. Plot the O2 sensor voltages before the cat and after the cat in real time. The before O2 should look mostly like a sine wave and the after O2 sensor should be relatively flat. Theres another for diagnosing the evap system functionality but I cant remember how it works.
