Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'lack of low range frequencies' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'lack of low range frequencies' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install with the sub' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Add some bottom end and you'll think you just got new front speakers installed with the sub.

Suggestion
Replacing the dash speakers may give you better mids and highs, but without the bottom end, you're still missing a good bit of the music.

Suggestion
Even with replacing the speakers with much better ones, there remains a very distinct lack of lows, which means the system still pretty much sounds like crap.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There are basically two schools of thought:
(1) Upgrade to Focals (or similar grade) or (2) upgrade to PSE or Fabspeed (or similar grade).
I wouldn't do both -> that seems like a waste
BTW, click on the speaker related links in my sig to get my thought on Focals...

The factory mids/tweets are not that bad (unless their blown). The problem is a lack of low range frequencies. The best and easiest thing you can do to improve sound quality is add a small amplified subwoofer to the existing system (i.e. amplified 6" or 8" Bazooka on the lower step of the rear package tray or an 8" or 10" under the hood up front). I worked in the automotive audio industry from '88 - '05 and the most common mistake people make is not setting the system up to play full range sound. Replacing the dash speakers may give you better mids and highs, but without the bottom end, you're still missing a good bit of the music. As a comparison, unplug the sub on your home theater and try to watch a movie or listen to music...you'll instantly realize what's missing.
On a related note, don't get this suggestion confused with the BOOM BOOM crap you hear at any given redlight on a Saturday night. Subwoofers are only offensive when they are under the control of offensive consumers. Otherwise, they are an absolute necessity in the world of car audio since most of the outside sound interference (engine rumble, wind noise, etc) cancels out what little low frequencies the dash speakers are able to reproduce.
Oh, you should have heard and seen the ones that came out of my car. Pure low budget crap. I did have the base stereo system. Most folks have something better.
But you are right in this respect. Even with replacing the speakers with much better ones, there remains a very distinct lack of lows, which means the system still pretty much sounds like crap.
Just to clarify, when I say "not that bad"...I don't mean they sound good...they would just sound a lot better if they weren't working so hard trying to play low notes. For example, listen to your system at a reasonable volume...then listen to it again after you turn the bass control back to a normal level. With the exception of the missing low frequencies, it's tolerable. Add some bottom end and you'll think you just got new front speakers installed with the sub.
you need an amp if you replaced the stock speakers....... rennlist goers like focal , mb quarts are not bad either......good luck...
