I had my engine replaced at 5,000 miles with never even coming close to redlining the thing or driving it very hard though it is a daily driver.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, I am narrowing my choices down. Here are my 3 choices at this moment. All Carfaxs have been pulled.
All prices are $49,000 or less.
2002 C4S Silver/blk
39,000 miles
I believe 2 owners(1 private 1 dealer)
new engine around 27,000 miles
Techart wheels and exhaust system
In my opinion this looks the best and is the one I am most attracted to but may not be the best choice. I have all the warranty service records(seller provided and confirmed with 99Firehawks's help). Driven less than 1000 miles since 10/13/05??? I believe this dealer has had it since that date.

So what do you guys think????????? I need some outside advice as I may not be thinking with my brain.
I like the middle one - it's a good balance between the two, includes some mods, and has good mileage. You've also got 10 months of warranty if anything goes wrong. There's virtually no functional difference between an '02 and an '03, so that's no big deal.
The car with the Techart wheels appears to have been lowered. Could have upgraded suspension.
I agree with Dell and Gant that the car with the CPO warranty might be hard to beat. You can add wheels, suspension, etc to this car, but you can't add CPO to the others.
You need to find out if the new engine was installed under the original factory warranty. If it was, the new engine is now likely out of warranty. If the factory warranty had already expired when the new engine was installed 12k miles ago, the 2yr warranty of the replacement engine is probably half gone already.
With the CPO car, you are covered for any major repairs until sometime in 2010. That is worth the extra mileage on the 2003 car, IMHO.
I'm new to the board, but just purchased an '02 C4S, so I went through the same thing. I tend to avoid cars with mods for two reasons; first I question the quality of the installation, although that can be resolved by a good PPI. Second, I assume (maybe incorrectly?) that people who mod their cars drive them harder. Give me a stock, low-mileage car anytime.
Why was the engine replaced on car #1? That could be a deal breaker if it was replaced due to abuse.
Also, on the "Techart" car, if the car has only been driven 1000 miles since 10/05, and the engine has 12k miles on it, it is almost certain that the new engine was installed under factory warranty, which may have expired already (depending on in service date of original sale).
So, the new engine would have little to no warranty remaining.
03 c4s... hands down. assuming its optioned out the way you want it, 3yrs of FACTORY warranty, along with 03 vs 02 on the others in my estimation worth 4-5k easy. i would pay 2-3k more for a simple 2yr cpo. this comes with 1 full yr of orig warranty. that would be a huge peace of mind for me. again, all things being equal... ssk is 300, exhaust another 1500, after market wheels, nav and passport you need to decide whether you REALLY like em enough to bridge this gap imho...
Take the CPO. If you don't need it great, but nice to know it's available. Also, if you decide to get out of the car before the three years, it will be easier to unload.
the only difference between an '02 and '03 is about $4k in resale value. 10months aftermarket warranty vs. 3 years Certified Porsche Warrany? Hmm - Take your pick!
Phil is not telling the whole truth.......
sneaky bastard.
I am hearing conflicting information on CPO warranties transfering from one individual to another. Do they???
Yes, only from individual to individual, not to another dealer. And the new owner must "transfer" the warranty with PCNA. There is a coupon in the CPO booklet the new owner fills out and mails in to transfer the warranty.
1. Porsche Dealer to Individual......you can get CPO
2. Indiv to Indiv.....you can transfer CPO
3. non-Porsche dealer to indiv.......no transfer of CPO on a previous CPO'd car that they aquirred or offering of CPO to.
Price being equal I'd go for the newest car with the CPO, then mod it how you like it, rather than taking an older car with mods that maybe you would not have installed.
Phil, if you're selling your '04 for 49K, then maybe Zoolander should be talking to you.
Fair point. At least Zoolander can't say I didn't try and find him a good car - hey, I would have even come over to your place and done the inspection and test drive for him.
Throw me a bone there Phil. Tis the season for helping those less fortunate and in need. Oreganet has offered his valuable time which I consider a great gift for which I am grateful.
Help those who need a C4S. It is not a pleasant life without it's sunroof over my head.
You may want to add this one to your list. The price has recently been reduced from $63k. It has been on the lot for a long time, I have tried to buy it but they wouldn't budge on the price. It is a CPO car. Another one by me sold for around $54k and it was not CPO. I have bought both of my Porsche's from this dealer with no issues. By luck they had two C4S's one was a 993 the other was the 996. I bought the 993. PM me if you have any questions.
http://cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp...5&aff=national
If this '03 C4S, a nice car to be sure, but with >30K miles and looks to be pretty basic is around $57K, why are there some who think that my even thinking about $70K or so for my '04 with 1900 miles, in a rare color, and very well optioned is overpriced? I don't get it.
Again Dell, you amaze me. I resent you AND your remark!!
If I were going to sell my car, I'd start at $59 or $60 and negotiatte from there. You find me a 2002 C4S, in my shape, with a warranty until 2010 with under 20k miles for $50k to 53k. Not to mention, this is the WORST time of the year to sell a car. If I was going to sell my car, I would list it and prob. not get any offers until spring. For people that need to sell cars now, they would have to drop the price a couple grand. I am not one of those people.
YOU find it, THEN talk your crap! Until then, don't accuse me of trying to RIP-OFF anyone!!
Good-day!
Phil, It's mostly Dell, he is way off. He can't accept the fact that your car approaches the price of his car. If you look at the market, with those miles, YOUR car is asking $73 to $78 and probably getting around $71 to $75k.
I think Dell really needs to wake-up on this one!
Phil, I'll take a wild stab here and surmise that perhaps there's currently not a huge market for a higher-priced C4S? This may have more to do with what buyers are willing to
spend
for a 996 C4S than what a premium example like yours is actually
worth
. Your car at $70s may not be "overpriced" from a value standpoint, except the potential buyers may be weighing that price tag against other viable alternatives -- i.e., older TT and GT3, 997, etc. Whereas, the high-$50s may be where the majority of the buyers' bids are currently for a 996 C4S. I'd think a buyer really has to want a near-new 996 C4S to drop $70s on one.
As for Zoolander, my vote is on #3.
Here is the benifit of my research. This is a search for ALL 2002 Porsche all-wheel drive Coupes on Autotrader with UNDER 30k miles. MINE has under 20k. Why would I sell mine for $50 to $53k? I guess everyone on Autotrader is ripping people off.
Gant, now you are starting to bore me. Here you go with your cars.com results again. With your logic, I assume your car will be worth more in the spring as well? You have got to be the most insecure person on this board. Who cares if you car was worth $1 or $1M? But trying to tell others what the car is worth is getting old when you are way off base. And yes, trying to sell your 2002 for 60K is a f'in pipe dream and one based on delusion. You just said it yourself that you would advertise for 59K and go from there. I have no doubt that if somebody offered you 55K you would take it.
By the way, I could give a rat's @ss what car "approaches" mine in price. Fact is I have ZERO interest in selling it. Do a search on GT3's as well and you will see prices ranging from 75-95K for my car. I sure as fu@k don't think my car is worth 95K. Besides it is MOSTLY dealers asking those prices. Do yourself a favor and go plug in your car to Kelly Blue Book. Guess what? 51K for excellent condtion 15K miles 2002 C4S private party. You really need to take your docs advice and keep taking your meds.
I never said you wanted to sell your car, you just can't accept that Phil's car is WORTH close to yours.
You and many others have said, buy Porsches Private. I think this is a great idea, especially for warranty Xfers and so does the market. Mine has a warranty untill 2010. Becuase of this, private and retail prices are very close to the same price on P's in the open market. $61k is what Edmunds sais retail is on a 2002 C4s CPO vehicle.
KBB/Nada/Edmunds Blue-book gives an idea of a cars worth.
Autotrader, Ebay and other car venue's, give you the open-market asking prices that is why I posted it. I WOULD NOT even THINK about taking $55k for my car. I would be hard-pressed to take UNDER $59k if I were going to sell.
It amazes me how clueless you are on this topic. Find anyone anywhere who paid $50k or close for a car with my specs. YOU WILL NOT FIND THEM, unless the car was flooded or wrecked.
Even tho I am right and you are wrong, I still respect your opinions about other things.
Insecurity? Meds? I won't get into personal insults with you, other than to tell you I think you are totally wrong on this issue.
Charlie, I completely agree with your reasoning. The market is one thing, but with high end cars, if someone
really
wants a particular car/model/color/options, they'll likely be willing to pay a premium to obtain it. I was and did when I bought mine last year.
Please go back and show me where I said I couldn't accept the fact that Phil's car was worth close to mine. Never said it. Blue book on mine is 85K private 89K retail. I don't think I would have a chance in hell getting 85 for it nor is it for sale. They are 2 different cars and the issue is not with Phil but rather with you and your never ending quest to try and believe your car is worth something it is not. You are free to list it for whatever you think it is worth to you but getting it is another ball game. I would even pay the listing fees to you if you want to list it at your dellusional number and if it sells, tabs on me. That's a bet I know I will not lose. By the way, if you want to just play the numbers game, Phil's car(sorry Phil, but Gant seems to like to use your car as the benchmark for my car) retails for 71 and private party's at 66. How in the world is that "close" to 89 and 85 respectively?
Thanks for playing.
What about this? What if the dealer in car #1 agreed to sell it for around $46,000 and the car passed a VERY thorough PPI would car #3 still be the wiser choice??
Just being a little stubborn here.
You gut has already told you that #1 isn't the right one from your first post. Don't make the mistake of buying it for "looks" and get burned on questionable history later.
i don't know. i was asking.
do you have the carfax for it? would u mind to post it here?
IMHO, i would stay away any car been seating for more than a year.
Please... stop the insanity. We need to let Dell and Gant sit in a room all day until they work out their "valuation" issues.
Phil's in a tight spot because for what his car is worth, you could get a nice 997 - now I certainly don't want to discuss the merits of a C4S vs. a 997, but there's just too much overlap between the price points of the two models.
I agree that I'd be suspicious of car #1's new engine and mods. I like car number two, because I always like low miles, but the consensus seems to be car number three, so who am I to disagree?
Can't say I will even be back in the Lou but if you are in my neck of the woods PM me and we'll grab a beer (or two or.....)
ps. I hope everybody understands the dynamic between Gant and myself.
theres probably not a wrong choice to make from a logic standpoint, assuming again that they are of equal mechanical condition - and that above all else should be the first consideration. a car purchase is a VERY emotional one - Pcars being THE most, i think for all of us - and you mustnt make it based on logic. whether its a color, option combo or custom wheels, the car has to fit you.
unless youre feeling that one car is grossly cheap, and saving 4k is important enough to sacrifice other things on a 50k car, no need to rationalize!!! are you kiddin me? after spending that kinda dough on a TOY, you better be skipping home after you sign on the dotted line. you will always regret not getting that "special" car if you decide based on others opinion and doing the wise thing. go with a car tugs at you... better to have overspent and love a car than to have bought a bargain(and not sure theres any of that) that leaves you wanting/regretful.
just my $.02
Ahem! Was?!!
We love yer Gant, but sometimes we gotta wonder. Pretty funny that you kept that first post... I still remember that clearly.
I was sitting this one out on the sidelines, as to me the only honest valuation is what people are prepared to actually pay for a car.
You guys are hilarious. I leave the board for a few hours and I come back to this mess.
Anyways, I am obviously passionate about car #1 but #3 is getting strong support. I never did get some good opinions if Car#1 was available for $46000 and passed a stringent PPI compared to car #3.
I have also spoken to a few Porsche mech's and they say don't be worried about an engine replacement.
Del, my gut hasn't really told me anything yet.
Well then, get your tail down to my neck of the woods. I am sure after a few matini's we could figure it out!
See how much fun you miss when you leave Rennlist?
Well, I am in another airport lounge having a few vodka tonics looking for some divine intervention here.
Del-I will be heading to Raleigh sometime next week to pick up some parts from the old C2 and drop off a few. Maybe we could get together then.
thanks pl.
I hope you can read this.

so between 2005/10 until now, the car been auctioned twice. and whoever has/had it, they just can't move this thing.
not a good sign.
i will be VERY careful to inspect the car.
also,
http://www.stlouiscarmuseum.com/
doesn't look like a p dealer, either.
also, if you read their post, they don't mention anything about the condition of the car itself.
I tend to agree with pl - something doesn't sound right there - a car that cannot be moved on over a year and has gone through 2 auctions - something sounds fishy. That's a red flag to me also.
Came close to buying this car 4 months ago from St. Louis... Contacted the dealership and things just didn't add up. I think they told me it was a 1 owner west coast car; couldn't answer some basic question re the car. So I moved on; but if you get better info from them it's a sweet looking ride.
Just looked at the pictures again, the panel gaps aren't right. Looks like some work was done on the front end and the bumper cover doesn't align perfectly. Also, what's with the grease all over the leather interior? You're supposed to use Mobil 1 in the engine not on the interior. There is also a big gap in the the reporting (odometer, registration) between 06/19/2002 and when it went to auction in 2005. Have your local dealer run the vin# to see if there is any service history during those missing years. Imho, walk away from this one unless you get more info.
Pongo,
I do have all the records that go with the car and they include the period from 02 to 05. The dealer that maintained the car in CA faxed them to the seller and he forwarded it on to me. A few minor things but the engine was replaced 12/04 at around 27,000 miles.
I personally would not go with car #1. That car was for sale here in CA and when I saw it, it was in bad shape. Scratches everywhere, poor interior shape....etc
Update:
I decided to pass on car #1. I loved the looks of the car with those wheels and was told by Gant the exhaust sounded incredible but just one too many red flags from fellow Rennlisters. Thanks guys. You probably saved me alot of time and frustration.
Well, I have another question I would like to hear some opinions on.
Which car would you prefer if price where EQUAL:
#1
03 C4S
52,000 miles
CPO till 2010
all records(clean carfax)
some track time
private sale
#2 (hypothetical car)
02 C4S
30-40,000 miles
no warranty
all records(clean carfax)
dealer sale
I am not crazy about the 50,000 plus miles. So what do you think?????
I'd go with 1 also. The miles don't matter. The owner should be able to give you all the records you'll need to make you happy that the car has been well maintained - that's the main thing.
miles do matter a BIG DEAL as it has a huge influence on price so i'd wait it out some more for the right car, right price. neither seem like an option to me.
you'll always be driving that 50K+ mile '03 and not want to drive it cuz you're always looking at the mileage even if it's running great.
be patient for a bit longer, save up some more if u want and get one with lower miles, and w/ cpo - avoid regretting for settling.
what in the world kind of thinking is that? I have NEVER looked at my odometer thinking....DAMN, I better stop driving and adding miles. That is some of the stupiest logic I have ever heard. While he is at it, he might as well find a way to make time stand still so the car doesn't age either.
Yeah, she is. And I think I'm going to keep her. The car was held at a dealer, see my other post, for 4 weeks and when I finally picked it up and drove home it reminded me how awesome the car is.
milage is something, but not everything.
and we are not talking about ferrari here. we buy p-car to drive it, rain or snow.
last year when i shopping, i saw a 20KM car, but its condition is MUCH worse than the one i brought (39KM at the time). since then i put 8KM on it, i feel NO diff. performence wise/wear&tear-wise 1 year ago when i brought it.
I would disagree. Not to totally change the subject on this, but there are lots of Porsche engine replacements that nothing to do with abuse. I had my engine replaced at 5,000 miles with never even coming close to redlining the thing or driving it very hard though it is a daily driver. The fact is that there are lots of engine on the 996 that have been replaced for one reason or another, and I would venture to say that very few of these have anything to do with owner abuse. This is the reason I too would highly recommend the car with the most warranty. Seems that engine troubles surface in many cars ranging from brand new like mine to 20-30k mile cars that have been properly cared for.
iron out those diapers old man
you may have never but many others out there looking for a car put the # of miles as one of the top considerations for place a $ value on the car.
the author has already clearly stated his concerns about adding mileage on a 50K+ miles sports car and not just any sports car, but a porsche 911. being a small, impractical sports car, there are going to a good number more examples of low mileage, mint conditioned 911s than say your Subaru STIs of the world.
if the author can wait and be patient to look for a lower mileage '02-XX 996 C4S w/ CPO that's the one to go for v. listing 3 and forcing himself to buy out of the 3 right now, today.
otherwise, my bet is that he's going to feel like he's settling and that's not cool esp when you're spending tens upon tens of Gs on a luxury item that depreciates quickly (and even quicker the more miles you put on it).
You have missed the point entirely....once again. No wonder you **** everybody off in this forum. Do you have any idea what the OP is "really" looking for? Actually, I do. Do you know how much contact the OP and I have had outside of this forum? Let me answer that for you. That would be no. The OP actually happens to be a friend of mine OUTSIDE of this place and I do knwo what he wants. So when he posts 2 cars that he is interested in or 3 or whatever it may be, take a second to look at the 2 cars in question and then use your head. Obviously you didn't and instead chose, once again, to neglect to use your frontal lobe.
If you were looking at 2 cars, both wich are 4-5 years old and one has 50K miles on it and the other has 35K miles on it, how in the world can you tell which one is in better condition by that? The one with 50K miles could EASILY be in better condition than that and with the CPO, makes that one not only the better car, but the smarter buy.
I don't think you realize how assine your comment was assuming what he would think about a car that had 50K miles on it. Remember? You said he wouldn't even want to drive it thinking about all the miles he's racking up. We have put 65K on our 996CAB and don't EVER EVER EVER think about not driving it becasue of the miles we may put on it. And to tell the OP that he should save up a bit more for an exampe that is less miles AND has CPO is just even worse advice. If you really wanted to give smart advice to the OP then instead of asking him to exceed the budget he has set forth since it is clear that to get the year and MODEL he clearly wants and will have to take one with ABSURB miles as you interpret it, then he needs to think about getting a less expensive model (ie, a C2 coupe) than the C4S he has his eyes on.
and by the way Choi, I don't iron my diapers, I have them pressed at the dry cleaners. Besides, I don't think you really know how old I am so your comment is just hilarious to me to think you have struck a nerve with age. But then again you are the one concerned about age and miles, etc.. Clearly somebody that will never be happy in life.
One more USER off to the ignore list. Thank God the site has that feature to save us from trolls like yourself.
Here's what I don't get - and I think I've asked this before and never got an answer: why does this car have no miles on it? Did you break your foot? Have you been ill? You do realize that to properly enjoy the car, you must actually drive it, not just sit in it, in the garage making "brrrrrrrrrrrppppp" noises as you play with your gearshift?
I think your car is worth exactly what someone will pay for it. You can put it for sale for any price that you want, that's totally irrelevant. It's what it will sell for that counts. When I was car shopping in August, the dealer had a car that he said was worth 62 and I said was worth 58. He still has the car (now priced at 60) and I bought something else. Obviously, no one thinks that car is worth 62. Or 60. He will end up selling it for less than 58, and after many months of paying for it in inventory.

LVDell, thx for enhancing the rennlist experience with your addict status of 8K posts
if he's a friend outside the forum and if you guys have exchanged e-mails with each other about this very subject, then why does he feel the need to ask the larger group?
how has my advice hurt him or any potential readers of this thread in any way that it merits such a personal/harsh/vitriolic response? as perhaps another way of looking at it, a little bit outside the box?
lighten up, man. all i've said in this case is perhaps be patient for a lower mileage car with CPO. now if you're pointing a gun to your friend's head, well we wouldn't really know about that as that's your own business... and almost sounds like given your frustration to the brink of anger at a stranger on the internet... may well be the sad reality for you and esp your buddy.
at ease old fella
