Once you add shipping, it's probably a wash, or even more expensive on ebay.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been looking for a hardtop tool because my (used) '99 C2 came without one. It doesn't seem to be available at the online parts places or on ebay. My last resort will be going to the local dealership parts counter, but I'd rather not, so before I do, I'll ask the experts: Any ideas for where to buy a hardtop tool? Thanks, CP

POST 2Original post

As sad as it sounds, the dealer is your quickest as best bet if you need it now. It is such a low dollar item that trying eBay etc, probably isn't worth it.

POST 3Original post

I don't know what the dealer gets for one but.. ebay item number 290065809955 $29.00

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess my ebay skills need work. When I searched, all I found were top tools for Mercedes SL's. Thanks for the information. CP

POST 5Original post

Yeah I was going to say...I have seen a couple on ebay for sale. I usually search PORSCHE, 996, 911 and then narrow it to car parts and access..then I have them list it from LOWEST Price items first...

POST 6Original post

I'm usually a big ebay fan but it's not really worth to go via ebay for this tool. I bought mine from my local Porsche dealer some months ago who had it on stock. Price is $35; no shipping, risk of loss, or other potential ebay troubles; I guess $5 difference is hardly worth going via ebay.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As far as the money goes, you're right. Once you add shipping, it's probably a wash, or even more expensive on ebay. There is a convenience factor to ebay, though, because you don't have to go anywhere. On the other hand, there's no point passing up a chance to drive ....

POST 8Original post

I don't have mine in front of me to measure, but from what I recall of the design it seems you could probably substitute a metric hex socket in a pinch.

POST 9Original post

It is a 6 mm hex key. You can get one at Pep Boys, etc.

POST 10Original post

Yeah, but it's got the cool red plastic tool on the other end to remove the hole covers

POST 13Original post

Buy one from the dealer for your concourse competitions but USE a Craftsman ratchet with a 6mm allen drive.

POST 14Original post

Speaking of Hardtop wrenches, I actually have 2, one for use, and one for Concours display. The Concours one has the Cadmium polished and a leather handle!

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Omigod! Please tell me that was a joke and I was too dense to get it. BTW, the dealer I tried today was out of stock. $30, he said, but he'd have to order it.

POST 16Original post

Hey, this is serious stuff. The only problem is that the wrench only comes in black leather. Which is OK unless you have a Graphite Grey interior.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry; I didn't mean to offend. Forgive my ignorance. I had no idea concours judging would include the quality of the accessories. Surely it's not a deduction if the tool is in a contrasting color? Anyway, mine is a driver all the way. I don't have the patience or the pocketbook to maintain something as beautiful as your car.

POST 18Original post

It's also worth trying Sunset Imports. They may be able to get you a slightly better price than your own dealer. Either way, as you saw, it's not that expensive an item.
