Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The new style seal will fail without a doubt, any seal will, but it being a problem issue is definately a thing of the past.

Replace from a 997s perspective: yeah, as long as yours

Had my RMS changed under warranty 2 weeks ago with the latest and greatest seal.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
31 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I have noticed in the last year a remarkable decline in the complaint posts about the leaking RMS issue on 996s. Could it be that the last revision of the seal is really working, and RMS leaks is a thing of the past?
I got the new seal over a year and a half ago, and have not had a drip since. What is the consensus?
I hope so. Had my RMS changed under warranty 2 weeks ago with the latest and greatest seal. The service manager said that he hasn't seen one come back since they start using these. What is your dealer saying?
I have still seen a few leaks with the new seal, but really in the last year I have only seen maybe 2-3 of the new style seals leaking, THat says alot becasue we see a lot of cars come though the shop
I have an 01 C2 with 65.000 miles. I have no leaks and have never had any. Is it just a matter of time before my RMS starts leaking and has to be replaced ? If so, should I have it replaced if I have any other engine work done, as a precaution? (I am out of warranty).
My guess would be NO! However outside of our Porsches never being 100% potty trained it is really, fo me, not that big of a deal. I had mine replace about 15 months ago with no leaks, the warranty is 24 months so it should leak in about another 9 or so months, ha ha.
Typically, if you do a clutch all you need do is pull the flywheel and you are there. If done carefully, it is a pretty risk free procedure, at least on the older engines I have worked on.
On the other hand, maybe let the sleeping dog lie.
I would say yes. I've never actually seen a new style seal leak. Yes the new part number is a 997 number and there have been 997s with leaks but the early 997s were shipped with the old seal so its no surprise at all there were 997s with leaks. The new style seal will fail without a doubt, any seal will, but it being a problem issue is definately a thing of the past.
These threads wear me out. Been driving Porsches for 20 years and have put RMS in all of them. This is nothing new guys
Pay for one in a 928...drop the entire rear end and transmission...remove the torque tube..do the RMS and reassemble and align the car. Much more painful than a 996.
P cars leak fluids
Get a warranty, handle it or get something else. I own 2 Japenese cars for this reason.
Since Dell is not around today I just thought I would take his place
Merry Christmas everyone
I had a new RMS under CPO at 50k in April. Just took it in for the 75k service, and they tell me it needs another RMS...
I'll call them back to check they will be using the new seal, before I go off warranty at 100k some time in 2007.
Fello car nutz,
Shopping for a 996-2 Tip Cab (roomier vs. coupe).
What is the greatest duration & highest mileage covered by CPO limited warranty?
Are Tips more, less, or about equally prone to RMS leak?
Thanks all, & happy new year!
Jimbo
I see less tips with rms leaks, but ive never run the numbers, it could just be due to seeing less tiptronic cars in general. But i think that not having the input shaft pushing on the the crank reduces the the rms leaks
I believe CPO covers the car for two additional years after the original warranty expires, up to 100K miles. Used car purchase date is irrelevant.

Looks like we're both right. From the Porsche USA website:
- If sold while under the new car warranty, Coverage is up to 6 years or 100,000m/160,000km total , whichever comes first
- If sold once the new vehicle warranty has expired, Coverage is 2 years from the date of sale or up to 100,000m/160,000km, whichever comes first

What does RMS stand for?
</user>
I have searched the forums for 'RMS', and understand that leaks on numerous people's cars, but cannot find what RMS actually refers to.
It's great for vehicles to have "character," but leaking oil should not be considered an attractive flaw...especially when mechanical parts are thrown in the mix.
That being said, it seems Porsche has had some success in fixing the problem in the 997.
