Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

1st off, I need a new battery. Can I buy one from an auto-parts store. I need my car for New Years Eve. 2ndly, I need the Code for my stereo, which I DO NOT have. Anyway I get it today? Thanks guys!!!! Gant

POST 2Original post

You might check under the hood of your trunk. My radio code was written on the paint label sticker located on the underside of the hood.... Hope this helps.

POST 3Original post

Yes, you can get a battery to fit your 996 at auto parts stores. Sears has one also.

POST 4Original post

Auto parts will have one, but try Sam's or Costco and go for an Optima... At least, try for an Interstate.. I can't get a radio code until tuesday... Sorry

POST 5Original post

Mine doesn't require a code. When did they stop using them?

POST 6Original post

Perhaps with the MOST change? My 03 does not have one. Personally, I can't imagine anyone really wanting to steal one of these.

POST 7Original post

exactly. IIRC, the 2002model year was the last of the non-MOST radios which would explain the code Gant needs.

POST 8Original post

Gant, I replaced mine this summer and bought a Bosch Premium Gold battery - it's holding up well under trickle charge in the garage. I bought it from Pep Boys.

POST 9Original post

Did you get all of your original manuals? My code was on a plastic card in my manual.

POST 10Original post

Like others have chimed in already, a replacement battery is readily available at your local auto parts store. As with the radio security code, just call your dealer's service dept. They'll have you push a couple of buttons on the faceplate to get the serial #, and with that, they'll be able to retrieve the code for you. It took all of 5 minutes when I had it done long ago.

POST 12Original post

I believe that the optima is better and lighter but needs modification to the battery tray to fit. Search the battery installation posts for help. Also you need a vent tube like the original!!

POST 13Original post

turn the key on radio says code, hold the tp button untill it beeps and says becker scroll trhough the display until you get a serial number, wriet down the srial number and pm it to me and ill get youd code for you

POST 14Original post

Define better. Better depends upon the use. Sure if you're tracking your car (which Gant does not), then the optima is the better battery. if you do not, then it is wasted money, as the only things that matter are warranty and cold cranking amps. Just a clarification.

POST 15Original post

Isn't the gel (optima) battery less likely to lose it's charge due to inactivity? If ruptured in a crash won't send liquid acid all over the place.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got the new battery @ Autozone, works GREAT!! When I was installing it, I lookedup and sure enough, writtin in pen under the hood was the code!!!! Don't know what I'd do w/out you guys!! G

POST 17Original post

Glad to hear you got everything worked out in time for New Years.

POST 18Original post

You are correct on the effect of a crash. I'm not sure the comment about charge retention is true. All batteries are going to lose charge on standing. Optimas are generally favored for DE as they are lighter and do not rupture in a crash. As I said, the optima is fine for DE, but in my mind it does not justify the extra cost (and hassle of fitting) for regular street use - you're fine with a regular lead-acid battery.

POST 19Original post

My research on the subject of discharge while the car is dormant says the gel batteries discharge at a slower rate. This may be helpful to all those that find they have a dead battery after leaving their car for a few days. It may be a better battery for infrequent drivers.
