This is not a probability of success.

Let me say again, my primary concern here is what oil is approved because if my engine has a failure I want to be able to say "go ahead, test the oil, then fix or replace it".

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Alright, I've read a lot of posts, done searches and still I have questions about responses people seem to have when this topic comes up. I have been a M1 0w-40 guy since I bought the car (except for my last change, and I do mean last, at a quick lube where they put in what they wanted!). I can see both sides of the "water" vs heavier debate but what I want to focus on is this- My '03 C2 is still under warranty. I am only going to run what is ok with Porsche. I don't have my manual with me (on a 4 day business trip) but it seems it isn't needed anyways. What I understand from this forum, Porsche and other manufacturers is that any applicable TSB's rule. I read the latest TSB titled "All" (as in all models), 2/06, dated 7/28/06, #1701. Renntech has it listed. This TSB lists all approved oils for our cars. There are only three Mobil 1 oils listed, there are other Mobil/Exxon oils but only three M1. There is 0w-40, 5w-40 and 5w-50. The 5w-50 is the only 50-weight oil approved from any company. I need an oil for the winter in CT, and an oil for the summer and running it harder. Going to the Mobil web site they only show ONE oil that is made for the U.S. that makes the TSB list. It is M1 0w-40. Mobil does not list a 50 weight oil on their site for gas engines at all nor does it show a 5w-40. No 15w anything. It would seem to me the case is closed if you want a 0w-whatever for the winter M1 0w-40 does it well. If you want a whatever-w-40 for the summer M1 0w-40 does it well. If you want a whatever-50 weight oil for the summer...well there is none on the TSB list that ANYONE sells in the U.S. because M1 5w-50 is the only 50 weight on the whole TSB list and Mobil does not make it, at least in the U.S. If anyone can show me some other confirmed information about U.S. sales of M1 5w-50 I would most likely run it in the summer. I know, I know, dealers get oil in bulk drums and they may get something we cannot buy on a shelf but short of that or someone confirming a business that sells M1 5w-50 here in the States, I am going to stick with M1 0w-40, and it seems I'll continue using it year round. Let me say again, my primary concern here is what oil is approved because if my engine has a failure I want to be able to say "go ahead, test the oil, then fix or replace it". Lastly, why is there no discussion about filters? M1 brags about their's, especially with synthetics. We read all kinds of post about air filters and so on but the oil filter is important too. I would think only an approved Porsche filter would be the way to go but are there better filters out there that meet or exceed Porsche's standard and are approved? Happy New Year to all!!!

POST 2Original post

Geez, I had to read all that crap to get to the last sentence about the filter? In a simple short answer, OEM filter.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is the oem filter a paper element or a synthetic element?

POST 4Original post

Hmmmm. that is a question better for the guys over at Renntech. have you posted there?

POST 5Original post

go to the dealership and buy the OEM filter, or save yourself $7 and buy it from here http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg1.htm#item1

POST 6Original post

$19 for Porsche and $11.50 for Mahle? I get my Porsche ones from Sunset Porsche in Oregon for the price they are selling the Mahle ones! And IIRC I paid closer to $10.

POST 7Original post

I reviewed 3 filters on Renntech. I now have the Wix brand in my Boxster.
