Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone had an issue where the tires are "out of round" and cause vibration? Order 4 tires from TireRack and have vibration that was not present previously. Took back to installer to check and they state the two rear tires are defective and out of round. Have emailed TireRack for assistance and waiting.

POST 2Original post

I'm surprised the installer didn't notice this the first time they "balanced" them???

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I asked that as well and was told the machine at first shop was a spin balance and today they used a road force.

POST 4Original post

Hmmm, even on a "spin balance" I would think anyone with a decent eye would be able to see a tire that's "out of round"... I'll be interested to hear how this plays out. Good Luck

POST 5Original post

And out of round tires require an uncommon amount of weight to bring them into balance. If the balancer calls for a lot of weight, check the tires to see if the beads aren't seated properly (and the tire is not concentric with the rim), or that the tire has a manufacturing fault. Manufacturing faults aren't common, but they occur occasionally. The odds of both rears being defective - it's vanishingly small. I'd have a long look at installer error as the cause of your problems.

POST 6Original post

When I got my 996, the rear tires were vibrating around 80 MPH. I took them to my tire shop and they couldn't balance them because they were bent and out of round. A local guy in San Rafael, took the rears, repaired them for $140 and balanced them and they're amazing now. The tires are Porsche Sport Classic II, 18". Worst case, you can have them repaired, but since they're new I would think tire rack would make it right. Good luck.

POST 7Original post

Wheels and tires are two different things folks...How is a tire bent?

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 14159614

I have had two tires replaced (from different batches, years apart) because one was so out-of-round (or, more accurately, impossible to balance because of material inconsistencies). Even if they correct for an imbalance at speed X, the tire geometry will change slightly at high speeds over low speeds. If a tire is structurally flawed, getting a new one is the only real solution. Tape weights aren't meant to overcome significant material defects... When the tire is getting built up in successive laps, the length of each piece is crucial. If it's too long, a ridge can be present - or there can simply be a slightly thicker layer of material on one side than the other. Once a defect is cured into a tire, grinding out the affected area and rebuilding is the only way to fix it...and that's not cost-effective unless you're working on $10,000 mining tires. It also doesn't work on small, high-speed tires, since introducing a repair that is the same weight and density as the material around it is pretty much impossible. If you can't get the tire balanced properly after the second or third road-force attempt, and the wheel hasn't been damaged, the tire or the tech is faulty.

POST 9Original post

I've seen wheels "balanced" by installers who didn't understand what the dots on the tires mean, or how to position the tire. Most of those wheels had big strips of wheel weights on them ... and in one case, an installer who insisted that the wheel could not be balanced. I'm told that shouldn't happen with a Road Force balancer. But I'll bet it does.

POST 11Original post

This is why you have to do road force balancing and run-out. The low spot on the rim needs to be married to the high spot on the tire.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 14159336

What kind of tires? I just bought a set of tires and read a ton of reviews on the different models. I noticed that some of the max performance and better seem to flat spot after sitting, has the car been sitting?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They are Sumintomo HTR ZIII and car has not been sitting. I am not saying the tires are at issue only repeating what installer says. This is one of the downfalls of getting a better price via TireRack is then the installer washes their hand blaming the tire they did not sell you. Will post what I hear from TR once they get back to me. Thanks for the comments!

POST 14Original post

I would guess that's TireRack with make good on the tires FYI, HTR ZIII do flat spot when sitting. They do round out pretty quickly, maybe a mile or so of driving

POST 15Original post

Installers are far more unreliable than Tire Rack. Brain surgeons and rocket scientists do not install tires. As a matter of fact, in my area the installer was probably hired yesterday and won't be there tomorrow. As the owner of the car I would suggest you insist in a 'hang around" observation or do you want to assume they know where to put the wheel lock bolt that Porsche has taken the time to ID for them. I'd recommend not taking that for granted having had two misses on the last two sets of tires installed. My vote? Installer error.

POST 16Original post

A bad batch of tires could account for both being out of round. Each tire will have a date code on it. if they are in the same range, it's possible a mfg defect. I had this exact issue on a Revcon motorhome that tended to eat front tires(FWD) regularly. I bought the best Michelin truck tires I could get, and when installed on the wheels both were out of Michelin factory spec for runout. They HATED taking them back. Even sent one of their local reps to the shop to measure them. Then checked the wheels(nearly perfect), and the balance machine. Of course, they replaced them, and one of those was out of spec too. Later, they didn't come close to the mileage warranty and after being replaced once, the shop bought the tires back from me, and sent me on my way, he was done selling me tires for the Revcon.

POST 17Original post

Verify with your installer what the widest width tire is they are supposed to be working on. An installer who failed 5 (!) times to get my tires properly balanced finally admitted that their balancer was not rated for tires wider than X. Mine were X + something. I was livid. This was my one and only experience doing business with this Tire Rack preferred/trusted/whatever Installer. Getting the tires I wanted for 10% less wasn't worth the 2 days of BS required to get them mounted correctly. The best part was when the manager took me aside, apologized, and gave me the card for his buddy who manages a competing shop. The same shop where I have always bought tires except this one Tire Rack fiasco. *sigh*

POST 18Original post

Are these on Porsche wheels? I ask because one of the girls at my office just bought a used Audi TT with a seemingly out of round tire/wheel. Turned out the cantering rings were missing from the aftermarket wheels.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Porsche wheels. Unfortunately nothing from Tirerack yet as my hope is they have dealt with this before and can either resolve or advise best method forward.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 14160489

Oh those damn cantering rings...

POST 22Original post

My car continued to have vibration issues; front tires were new when I picked up the car, rears still with 90% profile. Had rears replaced to new tires, still vibration issues not fixed. Drove another 500km, also high speed to really heat up the tires, to no avail. Balanced perfectly each time! Today had the tires balanced including roadforce on a Hunter 9700. Clear issues identified on 3 (!!) tires, 2 front, 1 rear. 2 were solved by rotating the tire 180 degrees on the wheel; 1 not solved (front tire). Now the car has a much improved ride, only occasionally some very small vibration which I guess is related to that front tire. I was somewhat sceptical on the "roadforce" story but it does actually work very well. Of course, all that stands of falls with the guy working the machine. You need a good pro! Volkert

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

At this point I cannot say enough good about TireRack and how they have taken care of a customer. It's under warranty so they are sending two new ones to me. "Thank you for your email and recent order. I am sorry to hear that two of your tires were found to be out of round and need to be replaced. Please contact us at [phone removed], for assistance with shipping you replacement tires and getting the original rear tires back for warranty." Once the new ones are in I will take to shop that has road force machine and see if issue is resolved.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 14161655

I have never had the privilege of my tires being RF balanced nor have I needed it. Maybe because my tires have the word Michelin on them. My 1st automotive job in 1985 was at a great tire store where we observed the tire/wheel assembly spinning on the balancer. If it did not run true we solved the problem before releasing the vehicle to the customer. The only advantage of having a RF balancer is to limit number of times tire is rotated on wheel to matchup high & low spot. I wil take a trained "tech" over a RF Balancer anyday

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 14163276

Or better a trained tech with a Hunter9700.... My 911 runs on Michelin PS2 all round which are all new and fresh tires. So I did not expect these kind of issues. Volkert Volkert

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 10650139

This is one of the very best posts I have ever read about wheel balancing, and worth repeating here:

POST 27Original post

Actually place I went to the other day was a joy. I was recommended by my Indy to go there (he could not figure out the issue with the tires) and the guy working on the tires really took his time and step by step worked through it. Although the issue was with the rears he also did the front tires. All in all it took an hour. Clearly the balancing machine is capable of much more but I was happy with the good workmanship he delivered. He also told me that although you can be trained on the Hunter you still need to spend considerable hours working with it to really understand it. For instance the indications how much a tire should be rotated are often not correct. Volkert

POST 28Original post

All well and good but whoever, whatever, wherever, visually verify the spinning wheel/tire doesn't have excessive movement in any plane before it's removed from the spin balancer.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 14159614

Others here have mentioned manufacturing defects. They can also be out of round from shipping damage. If you have an unmounted tire, they can be damaged by over tightening with straps or being dropped from the back of a truck.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 14164894

Yep, that is what I did as well on all four tires, watch it spin and see if you observe excessive movement. However, it is not very scientific. I understood tire manufacturers accept measurement by a Hunter9700 as proof the tire is not good and will then accept to replace it. Don't know if that is a monkey sandwich, have not experienced it yet myself. Volkert
