Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

From one model year to the next, were there noteworthy upgrades affecting the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) of the 996? I drove several. It's hard to tell because as members well know some Porsche's live much harder lives than others. A '99 coupe wearing 18s sure had notably worse NVH vs. the average 996 tested (of which all or most wore 17s). It may well have had stiff aftermarket performance suspension to go w/ the 18s. A later model like-new Cab driven same day at the same authorized dealer was glass smooth & quiet...I wanted to steal it w/ the salesman sitting in it! The sound when revved was the sweetest motor I've heard other than a finely tuned CBX w/ a 6-1 exhaust. Also another coupe drove a bit rougher than average. But if memory serves that car had tire cord showing, probably illegal. Can you believe it was an authorized P dealer in a ritzy SF Bay Area town? (The salesman made statements so ridiculous I considered parking the Porshce & walking back to my car parked on the street.) I'm mostly curious between the '99 & '00 models, the only two I can probably afford. I was most interested in the '00 but started thinking I should also consider a '99 if it has a new factory motor ('99s were most likely to have motor problems requiring replacement).

POST 2Original post

you're right with most of your assetments on your experience..... if you are considering a 99, i would get the later ones....... most of the problems were on the earlier 99. in terms of 99 and 00, there's hardly a difference, same motor, interiors, etc...... i think one of the most important factor you need to do is a PPI, and WARR. most P-cars used are unpredictable.... i hear stories where a p-car would have only 20K miles on it and will need an engine replacement, while others will go 100K with no problems....... so it's hard to pin it down... On a lighter note, the 99's typically go for a really good deal i guess because of the new 997's and the popular 993's. My advice, if you can afford it, go for an 02, new face, stronger engine, and upgraded interiors........ upgrading a 99 to an 02 is pretty pricey and it's a better deal to go straight to the 02

POST 3Original post

Do you know if the tire pressures were the same on all the cars you tested? 5-10 psi can be the difference between the cars you are describing.

POST 4Original post

Where did this come from? Without a proper PPI are not most cars unpredictable? Hence the manufactures certified programs.

POST 5Original post

which dealer did u test drive in SF bay area? any car with no tread in tire is a huge oversight and if they know about it but won't do anything, liability is huge. i've been to most dealers in SF area and they all have at least a safety check. i'd go with 00 over 99. interior is nicer and there are upgrades all around. if you can afford, go for a 02 instead.
