Just had a bunch of work done on the car and the problem is still there.
Leading evidence: 'still there' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'still there' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust fuel up and down according' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
FI cars normally idle in closed loop mode adjusting fuel up and down according to the readings of the O2 sensors.
Adjust throttle body butterfly, i woudl pull the inlet hose

Suggestion
if the E-throttle idles by adjusting the throttle body butterfly, I woudl pull the inlet hose and clean the throttle body.

I would run som techron fuel cleaner through the tank.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When i start the car in the morning, it idles at around 500RPM. If I turn off and restart it immediatly goes up to normal idle.
This only happens when I start it for the first time of the day.Anyone else ever have this happen?
Just had a bunch of work done on the car and the problem is still there.
At the first start of the day, my car always idles *above* normal idle -- something like 1100 RPM. After the first mile or so at the first stop light, it comes down to 700 RPM, which is normal.
My car starts at 1200 RPM. Based on suggestions from this site, I dont begin driving until it drops. It takes almost exactly 120 seconds to lower the RPM's to exactly 800. I have never had it start and stay at anything under 800 RPM.
Vegascomedy,
I posted about this exact scenario a while back and got no definitive answers. Doesn't seem to affect performance at all. Sometimes if I wait the revs will go up on their own. Others I can very lightly tap the accelerator and they go to the normal fast idle. If I tap too hard it stalls and I restart like you described, which then starts up right to fast idle. Seems harmless for now so I'm living with it. Glad to know I'm not alone!

jlb,
I would have to find the thread where it was discussed. I will see if I can find it. The discussion seemed to make a lot of sense, so I just started going with it. I am fairly superstitious, so with a new P car and 31K miles with NO ISSUES, I will continue until the PORSCHE Gods give me another sign. Once it drops to 800RPM, I start rollin', keeping it under 3k RPM's until it hits 180 degrees. So far, it is working like a CHAMP
mine starts with high RPM, drops to ~800 after a few minutes.
the thing is when it drops, it's very rough, like straggling to go down from 1200 - 1000 - 800.
any problem? i didn't seem to have this problem last winter.
I haven't looked into this, but is there an "idle air bypass" of some type or is it using just the E-throttle to idle? This problem sounds just like a dirty idle air bypass valve. They build up debris over time and eventually can't flow enough air or start sticking. The normal fix is to take it off and clean it with carb cleaner and Q-tips. if the E-throttle idles by adjusting the throttle body butterfly, I woudl pull the inlet hose and clean the throttle body.
As far as high idle (11-1200) versus low idle (700-800), this is a normal progression. The reason has to do with the O2 sensors heating up enough to read properly. FI cars normally idle in closed loop mode adjusting fuel up and down according to the readings of the O2 sensors. The high idle is expected to fluxuate and may not be consistant day to day. There is just a target minimum the ECU keeps it at until the O2 sensor readings enter the correct range. Once they do, the closed loop system takes over and the idle drops.
I believe idle control valve were only in the 99s. Cleaning the throttle body with carb cleaner and the MAF with electrical contact cleaner couldn't hurt. But I'd run a tank of gas with techron added before going through all that.
