Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Until two weeks ago I had never heard the term Cardan Shaft. It is the formal name for the drive shaft connecting the transmission to the front axle. (Though someone may have a more technical description to differentiate it from a plain old drive shaft.)
I got my CPO 2003 C4S Coupe nearly six weeks ago. From day one it had a vibration that came in at exactly 83 MPH. I took it back to the dealer and they said the tires were flatspotted from sitting on their lot for a few months. They replaced the Conti SportContact 2s with brand new Bridgestone S02As at no cost to me. (Thank you, Steve Baun at Sun Motor Cars, Camp Hill, PA.) Well the vibrations at other speeds were gone, but the vibration at 83 MPH was still there. So I took it back and they aligned the Cardan Shaft and the vibration was lessened but not completely gone. I dropped the car off yesterday and they determined the Cardan Shaft was out of balance. They had a replacement Cardan Shaft overnighted and installed today. That is fast service!
The new Cardan Shaft transformed the ride at every speed. The car runs smooth at 83 MPH and at every other speed, too. Diagnostic tip: the Cardan Shaft vibration does not feel at all like an out of balance tire. It has a much higher frequency than a tire problem. More like a mild version of driving over the highway shoulder rumble strips at 70 MPH. It is a kind of buzz-like vibration.
It was frustrating to own the car for a few weeks and not have it be just right. But now it is great! It is time to start putting some real miles on it!
I did get to drive a thousand miles in the loaner 06 Cayenne V6 they gave me while working on my car. Build quality is good, but it is not fun to drive. In my opinion, it is just too tall, too heavy, and too sluggish a performer to have been given a Porsche badge. But if it funds development of the next Carrera, who am I to complain?
Mark, I don't think I have read about that problem prior to reading your post. Glad they got it worked out. BTW, did you ever post any pics of your car? We usually ask that newbies post a few pics.
It was a new one to me, Tim. I've owned a few AWD cars (VW and Subaru), but I never really paid any attention to the driveshaft, oops, Cardan Shaft. It is one of those no-maintenance items, I never really thought about. Hopefully, I'll never have to think about it again!
Here was my "new car post" with pictures...
