Suggestion
I drove z06 for a week when it first came out, my boss had it for 5 months and he traded in to get M5 since he gots kids, all I can say the z06 is not very pleasant for daily driving, steering are too stiff, and you really have to work those clutch everytime you change gear, I believe for daily driving on a 35 mph road, our 911 is the best overall.

I suspect the author is a 911 driver at heart but he made a pretty good case of why the Cayman S is its greatest rival.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was curious to see whether anyone would care to comment on the articles written about the 911 in this months Motortrend (

. I suspect the author is a 911 driver at heart but he made a pretty good case of why the Cayman S is its greatest rival. If you haven't read the article, I recommend it.
I read it...but who the hell cares about the comparison between a Vette and a Porsche....the only corvette ever worth seeing and driving is a stingray......comparing the P to a Aston Martin isn't fair either....let them try it when the Turbo comes out!! and about the cayman..they are right...this car is a true rival...like you faster, leaner younger brother!!! But in the end the experience of the 911 with the bigger butt and seats in the back will always win!! Just my 2 cents...Aston Martin looks very sweet though!!!
I don't know, guys, the review of the Vette z-06 was screaming good, particularly the portion where they described the upgraded look of the interior. And, kilrgt on this forum swears by these little Vette bastards. You're starting to get a ton more for the money. I'm anxious to take out the Z-06 again after having driven my 996 for a while now and comparing the difference between the two.
As for the Aston Martin, it's a beaut, but it's more player than racer. And the Cayman? Well, I had a Boxster S for years and its handling always thrilled me. Though I haven't driven a Cayman S, I can only imagine....
When you're the benchmark (ie. the 911) someone is always taking a run at you....ultimate form of flattery really. Porsche has taken a few pages out of the 911 and Boxster books in creating the Cayman, so no surprise that it's a great car, and I would be disappointed if it wasn't. The Z-06 has great specs, including enormous acceleration, but it is a totally different ride. A friend of mine just ordered the Aston (it arrives next Dec. or Jan.), great car, very plush, more of a tourer than a sports car like the 911. I've only had my P-car about a year...lovin' every minute of it and still can't get the silly grin off my face every time I drive it.
Performance is subjective. yes the Z06 generally out-accelerate the 911's (except maybe the Turbo) and offers excellent handling on the track but it lacks the road feel typical of Porsches and Bimmers. With the advent of the 997 GT3 and Turbos, the 911 may still have the overall edge over the C6 Z06.

I love the vette, I think it's one of the best looking cars out there.
My wife FORBIDS me to ever own one, lest I join the white shoes and the gold chain crowd, though...
I think my wife would think I was cruising the highschools if I got a 'vette! Yup, it's a great machine, but it exudes a different personality than the old world charm of the 911 IMHO.
911 vs Vette:
My seat time with C6 (not Z06) left me disappointed. My 996 felt slightly faster, brake harder and had nicer interior. I think Z06 is nicer inside and out but I doubt if I'll prefer it over a 997S. If budget is tight, it's a great sports car.
911 vs Cayman:
If backseats aren't needed. Cayman is a good way to go. If you are into cabs, I'd still get the 987S though - great discount to be had and I think it looks better. Cayman's rear look like a jr car. No presence. Cayman is great as a track car that can be daily driven.
911 vs AM:
AM is nicer in every way. Better sound, more presence & exclusivity. Only downside maybe maintenance, 2 seats only, perhaps resale. I don't think too many 911 buyer cross shop AM though. AM is probly comparable to 996 or 997 TT.
To me, 911 still remains as the most classic and practical sports car. Z06 is a close second in practicality and first in terms of value and performance. Cayman is nimble, capable and ideal for autocross. AM is most all arounded sports car that has a blend of performance, class, looks, sound that neither 911, Vette, Cayman can match.
Of the three tested, only the Aston martin excites me as much as the 911. That car has some serious curb appeal, even if it's not in the same league performance wise. There is no question the new z06 is the best performance buy for the money today, possibly in history. Nonetheless, I just can't see myself in one.
The cayman needs 50 more horsepower to become the <almost> perfect car.
The AM was great. The finish work was top notch (beats the 911 and kills the Vette) and it had one the best manu-matic transmissions I've ever played with. My issue was with the ride. It was sweet. Too sweet. You don't want your GT to drive like a saloon. If that's what you're looking for, by a Maybach.
The Z-06 was also great. The HP sucks you back into the seat as soon as you hit the pedal. The handling was as good or maybe better than my C4S. I just couldn't handle the poor finishwork. Too many rattles and ping and too many plastic parts. I can't see it holding up as a daily driver.
I'm not getting rid of the C4S anytime soon. Maybe once the new BMW M Coupe comes out?
I drove Vettes for over 30 years had 5 of them and you can't beat the low end torque of the big V8. I like my 911 because it is more fun to drive. The Vette got too big and the turning radius made it not nimble at slow speeds and tight turns. I could care less what my image is. I don't buy or drive cars to impress anyone but myself. I got news for all you guys who think your so cool. No one cares or is watching. I drove my 911 down the freeway with the top down and an Alien in the passenger seat. Not an illegal kind but a Roswell type! Well OK it was a rubber model but looked real as hell. NO ONE EVEN LOOKED AT ME. Most people don't know what a Porsche is or care. All the car nuts have their favorite and think if your not driving that you a dweeb. Buy what you want drive what you want and have fun. I have never owned any gold chains but I still love my old Vettes. I'd get one again if it met my needs. YMMV
