Immediately it started pulling to the right and had a vibration, so I slowed down to about 50 pulled off the highway and then inspected the damage.

Took the car to a different Discount Tire, found that the rear rim that was repaired is still bent, and TWO of the brand new Michelin PS2's have Hunter #'s in the mid thirties!

I've always had at least one tire out of the batch of four have to be replaced because of a high number.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

On the way to work this morning there was a huge rock in the middle of the highway that I couldn't avoid due to other cars. I hit it with my right front wheel. Immediately it started pulling to the right and had a vibration, so I slowed down to about 50 pulled off the highway and then inspected the damage. As from the picture you see I think the rock punctured the power steering line. And it also ruined the tire cuz it went flat after about 10 minutes. I've got a claim in with USAA and the car is at the Porsche dealer. But they say they won't get to it for at least four weeks.
Not a great start for the day...
What a way to start a day. Poor car all banged up. Probably four weeks to order a power steering line and get it from Stuttgart, then install and bleed out the system. From your description, I would have the tire dismounted and very carefully have the wheel inspected for cracks.

I'd find a good Indie and start building a relationship.. 4 weeks ,, not acceptable.
I can get pipes made locally at a hydraulic shop ,, see if you can get the old one off and have one made.
wyovino - that's the backlog the local P-car dealer has. My indy shop is 3 1/2 weeks wait...
DBJoe - Yes, definitely will do that!
808Bill - yeah, funny thing is the last time I had it on a lift I thought, "why isn't that shielded there? It's right behind the wheel?" So much for 20/20 hindsight, and oh, fire the Porsche engineer that did it that way.
pdxmotorhead - I'm leaning towards that. But USAA is sending an inspector out within two days. Once he's seen the car and we get a probable idea of the damage, if it's not much I'll tow the car to my secondary indie shop and we'll work on it there.
LexVan - stationary rock, so it's collision here in Texas.
The big bummer is my wife and I have a big trip planned to the Big Bend area Oct 18 with the local P-club, looks like I won't be going on that...
Great! Keep one of those front wheels laying around just in case. If that front wheel isn't cracked I'll be surprised.
Do you have a rear wheel? One of my rear's is bent slightly...
UPDATE - insurance guy came out and inspected it on a lift.
Front and rear tire ruined
Front rim bent
Rear rim bent
Power steering return line punctured
Some plastic pieces here and there
I already ordered the power steering line, $260 from Porsche, coming from Germany, expedited so will be here in a week.
Now I just need to find a replacement fr and rear wheel...
Car is at my house, I'll do all the work except the power steering line, will have a shop do that, maybe...
All in all good experience from my insurer, USAA.
You shouldn't have to locate the replacement parts, that's the dealers job if they are doing the work,,
In my experience , with a dealer shop doing the work, your already eating some pain and a claim so let them
earn their money.
UPDATE
Dropped of the two bent wheels at the wheel repair shop, they spun them and said both are repairable!
Tires will be here Wednesday...
Power steering return line should be here later this week...
Dealer isn't doing the work, I am, with the help of Joe's Last Chance Garage, he'll do the return line.
UPDATE
Picked up wheels from repair shop, dropped them off at Discount tire for all new shoes. Should be ready Wednesday.
Brought home two good tires, one front, one rear, will keep them around for emergencies.
UPDATE
Drove the car to my friends business, AMCPILOT here on Rennlist owns Joe's Last Chance Garage. He was looking at the line that Porsche sent and said that it's not the right one!
So we're looking at the car trying to figure out what to do. He filled the Power steering reservoir with the proper fluid and turned the wheels lock to lock, no leak whatsoever?!?!?
Here's a pic of what we were looking at:
Only today it was dry as a bone!
We're scratching our heads, trying to figure it out. So he took a pic of the sticker on the line:
So we go looking up that number and it seems to be a A/C refrigerant line. Now we're really confused, because the A/C works perfect.
I drove it home, g
oing to drive the car tomorrow, and I'm going to bring that power steering return line back to Porsche. And get them to order the correct refrigerant line. Even if it's not leaking I think it's dented so bad that I don't want to trust it. I'll probably have Porsche actually replace the refrigerant line once it comes in and I'll make an appointment with them. No hurry on that.
So I could have been driving my car since Thursday night...
Let's see how USAA feels about all this tomorrow, and will Porsche take the line back, or give me credit on it for the correct A/C line?
Hoping it all goes well, still need to get it aligned and put the three plastic pieces I ordered from Suncoast on once they get here.
Drove to work this morning, all seemed fine, including the A/C.
Still quite a big dent in it that I'm not comfortable with. Called USAA they said they'd pay for it to be replaced.
A/C Line, 996-573-091-01, $171.05, three in Atlanta. Now I need to find someone in town that can do it, and knows what they're doing! Jones Autowerks said they would, 3 week wait...
Oh, and Porsche won't take the special order power steering line from Germany, so USAA gets to eat that.
Was the original picture you took right after the accident? If it was then it is most likely condensation on the line from the a/c working. If thats the case that would be a normal operating condition.
UPDATE:
Took the car to a different Discount Tire, found that the rear rim that was repaired is still bent, and TWO of the brand new Michelin PS2's have Hunter #'s in the mid thirties!
They ordered me two new replacement tires.
Now I'm searching for ONE
18" Lt Alloy Carrera Wheel, Porsche Part # 996-362-140-03, 1
0"x18", 65mm offset, bolt pattern is 5x130.
If anyone knows someone that has one, ping me please!
Still waiting on the Porsche dealer to give me a good estimate for the A/C line replacement...
A few questions and points.
1. You said they found the wheel is still bent after being repaired? Was the wheel just repainted or actually straightened? The reason i ask is the wheel repair bussiness is known to have 2 sides. The area i am in has a mobile company called Alloy Wheel Specialist. The work they do that is mobile is strickly cosmetic. If the wheel actually needs to be straightened the will take it back to their main facility to be repaired.
2. I am a little confused about the balancing of the new michelins. It is not uncommon at all for a wheel and tire to call for 30 grams. That is not an abnormally high amount of weights. Even if they thought is was they should attempt to index the tire/wheel before calling it a defect. I assume the did attempt this. But either way, 30 grams is not a lot.
Not 30 grams, 35 hunter number. It's some number the hunter road force machine comes up with. The lower the number the better. In my 20 years of Porsche ownership, a number under 15 is good, under 10 even better. Over 20 and I ask for a new tire. The two bad tires are 35 and 39. Discount tire manager didn't baulk at agreeing to order the new tires.
If you've never seen a hunter Road Force machine before, just look at videos in YouTube that shows how they work. They're quite amazing. Porsche dealers first got them back in 2004 when they first came out. And they've been using them exclusively since then. Most good tire shops nowadays have them.
Over the years each time I've bought four brand new tires, good quality michelins. I've always had at least one tire out of the batch of four have to be replaced because of a high number. It might be because Discount Tire buy seconds, instead of Firsts, but I'm not sure. Either way the only way to go is to have your tires Hunter Road Force balanced.
The actual weight that was added to the tires was all Less Than 3 oz.
UPDATE
Installed the new front fender liner and the two rubber air dams.
NOTE: always keep a new bag of those plastic clippy dohikees laying around, they will come in handy!
I was also able to get that side bottom piece finally clipped up into the bumper! (second pic)
And yes, I took the stickers off before putting the wheel back on...
UPDATE
Got the wheel in yesterday from European Parts Dismantlers in California, cleaned it up, took to Discount tire, spun it up on the machine, BENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ***********************************
Sending it back to them today...
Discount tire replaced one front and one rear tire that had high Hunter road force numbers, now they're down to acceptable numbers.
A brand new rear wheel from Porsche is $1,088! A new set of Victory wheels is $1800.
Way forward - going to drive the car and determine how bad the bent rim is when driving, then make a decision from there.
