My next thought is to just buy a parking brake handle off Ebay and replace the button.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So here's a conundrum for the ages. About a year ago the button on my emergency brake handle shot off like a bullet, ricocheted off the center console, and went somewhere under the seat. After multiple searches I pulled the seat and lo and behold I can see the button lying below the hole that the front left seat bolt goes through. How on earth do I retrieve it? My guess is that the button went underneath the seat, rolled forward and then to the left where it's currently at. It sits between two pieces of sheet metal on the floor. I can knock it around with a long thin screw driver and have tried to both vacuum and blow it out with a shop vac. Is there any way to access this area from below? Any suggestions are highly welcome!

POST 3Original post

put a piece of chewing gum or something sticky (tape in a loop) on end of screw driver. or turn car upside down and shake how much is the replacement button? not sure what button you are talking about? the one on the end to release ebrake? oh and there's a penny under your mat (driver's side)

That was my first thought but for some reason I'm thinking the button is plastic. Maybe try suction? I have attachments for my small shop vac that allow you to get into the little nooks and crannies. POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's a lost cause, unfortunately. I was able to move it a bit but that was about it and lost it again. It's plastic, so no go with a magnet Is Design911 or eBay still about the only places for replacement handles/buttons?

This or some duct tape crimped in some stiff wire(coat hanger)

POST 7Original post

If it doesn't rattle...forget it....I know "we" can be a bit obsessive....can't let the little bit beat you.. (Or, you could cut open the floor panel underneath )

POST 8Original post

Mine flew of too but fortunately stayed on the floor. Also, mine is aluminum and not plastic. Maybe try to use one of those gripper things that has three tiny retractable jaws at the end of a flexible cable housing. That tool has saved me many times. Good luck. I know it would drive me crazy knowing it was there.

POST 9Original post

Shoe goo, pre-partially dried but still tacky, on the end of a stick. I have even backed out a snapped off bolt with this.

POST 10Original post

First sort out how it got in - then you know how to get it out - that should be your exit route. I don't think it is going to fit through the bolt hole (assuming you're talking about the button on the end of the e-brake handle). You may need to peel the carpet back, but that isn't a horrible job, now that you have the seat out. See the big holes? That's your route in and out (picture from when I had my interior stripped, outboard side similar).

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16226055

Correct. It won't fit through any of the bolt holes. It must have gone under the seat and then eventually forward or back through the larger openings and then found itself in the area I first spotted it. So with a coat hanger, you'd have to guide it around to one of the openings. I was only able to see it once and then when I attempted to maneuver it with a coat hanger it spun and rattled around and I haven't been able to see, feel, or hear it since. I believe it's lodged somewhere in there. My next thought is to just buy a parking brake handle off Ebay and replace the button. Would this work? https://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-Porsch...wAAOSwGIZcSMvA

POST 12Original post

My next thought would be, "I'm in this far, let's peel back the carpet."

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16226224

Can the carpet be peeled back without having to remove the center console? It would be great if I could simply peel it from the driver's foot well and back a bit without having to remove a bunch of stuff.

POST 14Original post

Get a plasma cutter and cut a giant hole to retrieve it from. Careful not to incinerate the button while doing it. LOL

POST 15Original post

Well, not exactly - the whole floor area is one big carpet section. But I am pretty sure you can peel it up from the area where the security module is and get to the area you need to get to. It isn't far forward from that opening. Or you could remove the sill trim and peel more of it back.

POST 16Original post

My button also flies off periodically. Thankfully always been able to find it. Anyone recommend a way to reattach permanently or not advised? Superglue? Lesser strength locktite?

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Out of curiosity, how does it attach? It appears it may insert and then twist on to lock in place? I'm buying a replacement brake handle solely for the button and want to make sure I don't break that one trying to take it off.

POST 18Original post

I sure don't know the answer to this one other than a hot glue gun, stick a chunk on a screwdriver and to the cap/piece and let it sit for a few minutes and try to pull out. Otherwise, I vote for the Plasma Cutter. I've always wanted to try one, let me know if I can be of assistance, lol. Good luck.

I pulled and twisted a spare I have but no go. On another note, glad to see so many trying to help you with your efforts even though it's not as sexy as some of the topics that come up.

Same here and I can usually pop it into place without a problem but it's sure a hassle and comes off at the wrong times!
