Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You could disconnect the screen and have it blank?
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect screen and have it blank' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect screen and have it blank' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The one I want to change on my Mk2 is the one showing the speed, which is in a small display underneath the analog speedometer.

I think you guys are missing my point - it is not to get the info, it is to replace useless info with useful info.

To do anything else, you need to remove the LCD board and the polarizing filter in front of it and replace with something you can program.

I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding what your trying to accomplish, but on my Mk2, I can cycle through several screens on this display using the forth stalk.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anybody ever come up with a way to show some useful information in place of the digital speedo? It seems awfully redundant. Oil temp would be the dream, but I would happily take any info that is not redundant of an analog gauge.
The mk2 obc cannot show this data. You have to go through the CAN to get the real data in fact, not even a standard obd reader will get the true data. That said, my goal is less to see oil temp and more to not see a digital speedo
The instrument cluster is very stupid (i.e. solid state) - the LCD segments are all dedicated to the data they display.
It _might_ be possible to remove one of the LCD segments and replace it with an Arduino/Raspberry Pi-controlled display on which you could show anything you like. However, getting the backlighting to match between the LCD wells might be a challenge.
When my cluster was on the fritz, I disassembled it at least a dozen times while troubleshooting; I even tried retrofitting the backlights with programmable color LEDs (because orange).
The LCD segments are also prone to damage from overhandling - if you over-torque things while you're messing around, your LCD segments wind up looking like this:
I'd use an OBD-II interface and a phone or tablet to display the stuff you want to see. It's not as slick as having it on the instrument cluster - but then again, there's nothing very slick about having a busted instrument cluster.
I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding what your trying to accomplish, but on my Mk2, I can cycle through several screens on this display using the forth stalk. Shows MPG, distance to fuel, outside temperature are the few I can remember off the top of my head. I usual leave set on outside temp.
We're talking about a different display. The one I want to change on my Mk2 is the one showing the speed, which is in a small display underneath the analog speedometer. I hate the redundancy.
If you simply want to get rid of the digital speed readout, it would be fairly trivial to add a switch to toggle power for that LCD well's backlight. To do anything else, you need to remove the LCD board and the polarizing filter in front of it and replace with something you can program. To reiterate, that LCD display is not really meant to be flexible enough to display anything else.
My town is highly infested with Photo Speed cameras.. Drive on the needle and its a easy ticket.. It may also be the color,, mine has the "silver" upgrade from the factory,, Great at night,, hard to see in the daytime..
If you want additional data, you might want to look into a Scangauge. They aren't very expensive ($140 or so) and they plug into your OBD port. I believe they make one with variable color backlighting now so you can make it orange to match your car. They're small enough you could mount it on top of the steering column, or in the center console.

I think you guys are missing my point - it is not to get the info, it is to replace useless info with useful info. That said, looks like the answer is that it is much more trouble than it is worth.
Not at all. The point of the question was how to display any other information where there is presently a digital speedometer. People have chimed in with how to get other information to display elsewhere and how they feel the digital speedometer is good to have. Your first reply was directly on point, and led me to the conclusion that it is not worth the trouble. Everybody else pretty much missed the point.
Do you need to have something else displayed? You could disconnect the screen and have it blank?
would be easy to rig up something static to light up in there instead, like the Porsche logo or something else.
You could also swap the center screen with one of the side screens. Wouldn't be hard, depending on how comfortable you are with taking apart your cluster and doing modifications.
To answer your question: I dont know. But I do know you can just turn it off, theres a thread on how to do it somewhere here. Its in the menu on the GUI, and also in the owners manual. You may be able to change what it displays as well but it doesnt bother me so I havent looked into it. Good luck!
