Take a finger nail file and smooth it out. Make sure nothing is rubbing when it's bolted up.

It looks light years better than the one you remove, I suspect. Not sure I looked that closely at mine, but as long as the impeller blades aren't cracked, it should be fine.

Okay, I sanded most out. Now the water pump instructions say with paper gasket, apply sealing compound between water pump, gasket and motor. The gasket that came with it is plastic. Should I use sealing compound? It�s a pierburg wp and the gasket came with it. sorry for the dumb questions, don�t want to do this twice. thanks.

I went without anything more than gasket. Original I removed had no sealant. No leaks.

I thought that changing the water pump on my 996 was ridiculously complicated. My VW New Beetle needs a water pump and I just watched a DIY video. It makes the 996 job look like a walk in the park.
