Suggestion

Both the in car and the under car shorten the throw, but neither replaces the plastic shift linkage, and alot of the sloppiness comes from the linkage.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've noticed that there are 2 different types of short shifter kits: 1) the replacement stick shifter type, which includes B&M, Schnell and the Porsche SSK; 2) the transmission mounted plate type (% short throw can be adjusted), which includes TechArt, Ruf and 9ff. Has anybody tried both types? Is there a difference in performance or feel between the two types? Differences in notchiness or effort?

POST 2Original post

Most would steer you away from the undercar type.

POST 3Original post

As far ar I know the B&M IS the Porsche one, except Porsche sells you the entire shift housing, B&M sells you the parts to modify your existing shift housing. The shifters are exactly the same, Porsche gets them from B&M. Quality wise they are exactly the same. The Schnell looks to be an exact knockoff of the B&M, with maybe a change in the lever angle. Quality should be the same as B&M and Porsche. I have even seen a generic version and I have no experience with those....they work, but will they last? probably....who knows. The in car version increases the effort needed to shift while cleaning up the sloppiness and vagueness of the stock shifter. You can FEEL when it goes in gear. The undercar shortens the throws, but does nothing for the shift feel. The up side is you dont have the increased effort to shift, but all the sloppiness and vagueness is there. You may feel the stock shifter is not bad, but if you feel the B&M/Porsche shifter you will feel the difference and I LOVED the feel. It just takes a little more effort with each shift.

POST 5Original post

I am getting the OEM SSK fitted into my car as right now. I have driven several with this type, but have never driven the tranny mounted type so I cannot comment on those.

POST 6Original post

There are a few owners who have the stick shift type and the unit that bolts to the transmission, at the same time. They say it is real short and takes effort to shift. I seem to remember they were all turbo owners. I also seem to remember at least one of the owners removed the second short shift.

POST 7Original post

B&M also makes "under the car", They have both...

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

"Undercar type", that's the plate that fits onto the transmission right? Why would most favor the stick shifter type? Is it that most owners with an SSK have the stick shifter type and it's just an issue of prevalence? Or is it something else?

POST 9Original post

I have the B&M in car version. Both the in car and the under car shorten the throw, but neither replaces the plastic shift linkage, and alot of the sloppiness comes from the linkage. The plastic ones tend to wear quickly. I replaced mine with an Agency Power alloy linkage at the same time I put in the B&M. The plastic one was very worn and loose at only 35K. The alloy linkage gratly reduces the sloppiness. I would recommend doing the linkage at the same time you do the SSK. Just my experience.

POST 10Original post

if anyone is looking for the AP linkage, we have them in stock for 110$CDN.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do both the transmission mounted SSK and stick type SSK reduce the shift throw in all directions (front and back, left and right) or only in the front and back direction? Here's another question: do the metal shift linkages e.g. Agency Power feel palpably different in shifting than an intact plastic OEM linkage, or does it just feel the same but last longer and resist breakage better because it is metal instead of plastic?
