I also used spacers on the front wheels to square off the car's footprint.

I would recommend lots of late-braking to induce oversteer.

Suggestion

the 996 is just too big and heavy to be nearly as good of an auto-x car, not to mention the weight distribution makes it much less easy for it to abruptly change directions.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last year I autocrossed my Boxster and got very familiar and comfortable with it. I sold the Boxster for my 02 996 Cab and was wondering if there were any other Auotcrossers that made a similar move. I am curious if you have any advice since I am getting ready for my first event with the 996. Harder braking? Quicker Turn in? Harder acceleration through turns? etc... I appreciate any advice you can give or let me know what I should expect. The mid-engine is very different, I have found that out already. Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

your times are definately going to suffer. the 996 is just too big and heavy to be nearly as good of an auto-x car, not to mention the weight distribution makes it much less easy for it to abruptly change directions. i auto-x'd my boxster S and havent bothered with my 996, our cabrios are especially poor choices being less stiff, more top-heavy, heavier in general, etc.

POST 3Original post

Understeer... Understeer... Understeer... Your 996 does not like tight courses. You will be forced to reduce your corner entry speeds so try to get on the power as early as you can to decent exit speeds. Keep your expectations reasonable.

POST 4Original post

Amen! That is my biggest complaint of the 996 period is understeer. I feel like the engineers were so busy trying to tame the car and prevent the rear from stepping out on unsuspecting drivers that they neutered its abilities. As much negative camber as possible and a bit more meat on the front tires goes a ways towards fixing it, but certainly isnt the complete solution.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have noticed the understeer, I have not had the time to get it on the track or a safe lot to really test it out, but I am sure that is not going to change. There is understeer but if I lift I could be in serious trouble so I guees the important thing to focus on is entering and exiting speed with smooth acceleration through the turn...right? The Boxster sure was easy, just point it and punch the throtle. Oh well, I am ready for a change, this will just make me a better driver. I was planning on running this season stock but may change my mind after a few meets.

POST 6Original post

It's tough induce lift-throttle oversteer in a stock 996 on a short auto-cross course. You've got huge understeer that just kills corner entry speeds. Take advantage of the brakes and coming as late as you can without getting untidy and get on the power as soon as possible. Turn off the PSM if you have it. You do so much sliding on an auto cross course that the PSM comes in at unpredictable times. Go have fun! I've got an autocross to do this Sunday with my SC. My 40th no longer sees any time on the autocross or track.

POST 7Original post

My sentiments precisely. I don't get why they keep putting wider and wider rear tires on these cars, while keeping the fronts so skinny. From what I've observed, stock Boxsters are much better suited to autocrosses than stock 996's. I would recommend lots of late-braking to induce oversteer. Go lightly on the gas exiting turns, or you'll end up going much wider (or straighter) than you had planned.

POST 8Original post

A few things to help. For alignments, have a little toe-in on the rears and a little toe-out in the front. I also used spacers on the front wheels to square off the car's footprint. Run with a full tank of gas. Shut off the PSM. Don't think you can out run a well driven Z06. BT, DT at the '04 Solo Nationals.

POST 9Original post

I may have some Hoosier Racing Tires (Wets and Autocross models) and some wheels for sale soon.

POST 10Original post

Here the fastest times are from: 996, 996 GT3s, 993, then comes the boxters. I would expect this season will be a learning year. Get a good alinement. Learn the car and you will have fun and you will be faster. Except in the rain

POST 11Original post

if you auto-x alot get suspension.. then tires. upgrade the sway bars (depending on the class you want to be in). here in the PNW the fastest cars are the 996's .. and a couple 914's. The stock 996 does suffer from alot of understeer to help the drivers that can't drive I am glad I have everything changed out

POST 12Original post

I don't think any 996 short of a GT3 will outrun a Z06, a turbo MIGHT keep up, but wouldnt outrun it.

POST 13Original post

Motor Trend said that the Z06 was much more of a capable track car than the 997S. It's like Kilrgt has been saying fora while, you're sure getting a lot for the money in those new Vettes.
