Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I'm soon going to be a first time Porsche owner. After having read thru many of the posts here, I still have a few questions: 1. I'm looking at 2000-2002 911 Coupes with 30-50K miles on them. How long do such cars last (with regular maintenance)? Another 50K miles? Another 100K miles? 2. How much do people spend on regular maintenance, say annually? Let's say I end up fixing one important thing every year (and my luck with the car is just average). Will it be a few hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands? 3. What are the things I should look our for before I buy? (e.g. RMS issue, regular maintenance, anything else?) 4. Can anyone recommend a mechanic for an honest pre-purchase inspection, in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA? Thanks for your help...

1) This answer will be all over the place. The highest I've heard of on this board is just over 100k miles, but I'm sure there are higher out there. That being said, ask Bob how long they last, he'll say about 2000 miles per motor. The general concensus is there's no rhyme or reason but a motor that has 50,000 miles is generally going for the "long haul" while super low mileage motors are a bit more untested.

POST 3Original post

I live on the east coast, so I can't help with question 4. Even in the best of circumstances, the 996 is an expensive car to maintain so I wouldn't buy one unless it was a CPO car. At least that will give you two years of peace of mind. Engine longevity will depend upon how hard the car was driven and how much the car was abused. One of my coworkers has an '04 996 and he abuses his car. He loves to leave a patch of rubber on the road as he takes off from the parking lot where we work. He does this in the middle of winter with a cold engine. He also loves the sound of his engine at very high rpm so he keeps the revs up over 6K regularly. Somehow I don't think that engine will last 100K miles. On the other hand there are many 996 owners who take extraordinarily good care of their cars, and I believe that absent any inherent mechanical problems, those engines will easily last over 100K miles. Before buying the car get a copy of the vehicle's maintenance history and read it carefully. A CPO car is ideal and if that's not possible have a PPI performed by a Porsche cerified mechanic. Any mechanical problems should be identified in either of these inspections.
