Turns out the little impact with the curb bent both of control arms in back, and when my wheel bent it sliced the tires on the inside and he wouldnt recommend remounting it.

I always assumed it was just an added benefit of using aluminum parts over any other metal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, The other day I was driving my son to baseball practice while driving, trying to eat dinner and drive a stick. I bumped into a curb on the back drivers side. When I got home I noticed I dented my wheel and the camber was way off on that side. Sucks to get a new wheel but got that ordered and figured after a suspension adjustment and alignment Id be back in business; but the damage was much worse. Turns out the little impact with the curb bent both of control arms in back, and when my wheel bent it sliced the tires on the inside and he wouldnt recommend remounting it. All this from a slight curb impact? When I asked how could all this happen from a small impact I was told the cars are made with breakaway parts to prevent greater damage in case of an impact. Has anyone heard of this before? ::2003 C4S: D2 Racing coil overs, lowered 1.5, Fabspeed sport x-pipe cat, Fabspeed competition air intake, OZ Alleggerita HLT wheels on Sumi HTZR III's::

POST 2Original post

Small? You hit that curb harder than you think. Bumpers and body panels are "crumple zones" not wheels and suspension components.

POST 3Original post

I have heard of the idea of "break away parts" but not sure if it's true. I always assumed it was just an added benefit of using aluminum parts over any other metal. Lighter and snap vs heavier and bends. As for your impact, if your wheel also bent that badly, the hit had to be much more severe than the way you described. If so many parts were damaged, it was pretty bad.

POST 4Original post

Break away and crumple zones are at 50 mph. Not 5 mph. I think someone is being a little quiet on how hard he hit something.

POST 5Original post

A slight curb impact... a little bump... uh, yeah... ok!

POST 6Original post

Not true. These cars are robustly built with the best in German engineering, meaning they are far more complex than most. But they are built to extreme tolerances with one thing in mind: performance. Trucks are made with durability in mind, not necessarily performance. As such, you did something the car is not designed for and now your dealing with the ramifications of doing anything other than what these cars are meant for, two eyes on the road and two hands on the wheel. Its a bummer to hear such a small incident came with such a huge cost, but it is what is. Hoping you get her right and continue to enjoy.

POST 7Original post

Ive seen quite a few Porsche's take out the rear suspension at track events, unless your racing for $$$$$$ Stay OFF the alligator bumps.. the .0001 seconds ain't worth it for a club race or a DE.. Plus if you really ace the turn,, there is no advantage..
