Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Short time lurker, voracious reader, and first time poster. Looking to buy a 2002 996 C-2 Tiptronic with less than 30,000 miles. Looks like a fair amount selection in Dallas...and $40,000 - $50,000 range. And it won't be a daily driver.
Scrolled through many pages reading posters like myself looking to get into a p-car. I will be getting an extended warranty which makes sense.
My question and concern. It won't be too difficult to judge the condition of the car's exterior and interior. But how do I fully evaluate mechanical and electrical condition of the vehicle? I've read a few posters mention engine replacement... what a nightmare??
I have never had to experience an engine replacement in my vehicles..nor do I want to. I drive like an old man..and looking to keep the car for a long time.
I drove a BMW 3 series for 9 years without a single problem..and drove 350Z for 6 months and sold it. Been driving Acura RL - I like the silky smoothness it provides... and will probably drive it to the ground.
But owning a Porsche 911 before I turn 40 has been a goal for a while. I have 8 months. Will test drive one this week.
Thanks in advance.
Welcome, rxjohn! And I hope you find your dream car soon.
I am a fairly new 996 owner, so I wouldn't be qualified to give you advice.
However, I bought mine without a PPI (damn stupid says my mechanic) but I was lucky he says after a full service, that the car is rock solid. I did do much research and reading as homework though.
If you would like a copy of the 911 996 buyer's guide which I paid for online, PM me.
It's not a bible, but it helps for amateurs. Although you're still better off with a PPI.
Drug John, Very nice introduction and Welcome to Rennlist. We won't "hound" you for pics since you don't have a P-car yet. Hey guys, we finally got a new source to some MEDS!...
..... Just kidding, John!
When you find a car you are really interested in buying, get A Carfax is also recommended, to help determine if the car has any KNOWN negative history. Remember that a Carfax report can not list what has not been reported. If the Carfax checks out OK, then get a PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection) completed by someone other than the selling party. A good indy shop or P-car dealer will do this for $300 +/-.
Why are you considering a Tip? Why not a manual tranny? I could understand the Tip if you were going to drive in a lot of stop and go traffic every day, but if it is not going to be your daily driver, why not consider a manual 6-speed? When I was looking for my P-car, I was considering a Tip because I had not driven a stick in over 15 years. However, it took me only a couple of days to get comfortable with a stick again.
Please understand that I am not trying to "talk you into" and manual transmission car. The reason I am asking about your Tip decision is because I know of a few guys here on the 996 Forum and on the 997 Forum that wanted a manual but bought a Tip because their wives didn't know how to drive a stick shift. Well, as it turns out, most of the guys regret getting the Tip, because after driving the car a couple of times, their wives said they didn't want to drive the car anymore. So now they are stuck with a Tip, which they didn't want in the first place. You have the Acura RL for comfortable driving, why not consider a stick for some FUN driving? Just a thought....
Once again, Welcome and good luck on you search! Let us know if we can help!
I agree 100% with gota911. I was excited to get Tip with my Touareg (and thought it would be a lot of fun). Turns out that it is not as exciting as it sounds (you can't 'feel' what gear you're in, you have to either remember, or gaze at the dial, and 'click click click' just isn't nearly as exciting as shifting up or down). Then a few months ago, I drove a friend's 2006 Golf GTI (which also has a 6-speed manual), and instantly I remembered how much more fun a manual is.
therefore, when I started looking for my P-car, it simply HAD to be a manual, and now that I have the car, I can testify that manual is awesome!!!
(my 2 cents)
Cheers
Olaf
Yes..I am a drug guy
But I don't own a white coat..and I'm not good at counting pills..and haven't worked in a retail pharmacy before..
I was thinking tiptronic because I like to drink coffee while driving (may have to quit doing that) and I got totally burned out driving a 5 spd Jeep Wrangler in my 20's.. in Los Angeles Traffic..
And no, wife can't drive a standard and I bet she'll drive the p-car whenever she gets a chance. She's known to take off on my old 350-Z racing down the street.
But yes, I will test drive both Tip and standard. I'm calling my insurance guy today...
What extended warranty company do you guys recommend? I've scrolled through old threads on this topic but I don't see a conclusive recommendation.
Thanks!
The tips a power sucking tranny, especially with its 2nd gear starts. It will likely make the 911 feel not much quicker than your 350Z.
Get the manual, especially since it wouldn't be a daily driver!
My top 3 are
1. A&M
2. Ok
3. USC
Nebraska I can't hate anymore b/c my best friends in the entire world are the parent's of my beautiful goddaughter. I can't help it if her parents went to Nebraska!
c'mon...what's to hate.. tu beat both A&M and USC last year... I'm c/o 89 A&M... never lost to texas. And A&M is about to get blown out in austin next week.. where is the love!!!
Welcome, I from Dallas also, let's hope Colt is over that shoulder stinger he suffered last weekend. Tips are not as popular that's for sure but the traffic in Dallas sucks. That's why I got a tip and also my wife would launch a stick car right through the end of the garage. JW
TU? What is that? Tulane University? Temple University? Confused on that one.
now pass the tea and leave me alone so I can dwell on crap @ss K-State just a bit more
