Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys I am looking to buy a 00-02 996 hopefully within the next few weeks and would like to hear your insights into the C4S. I have been leaning towards a C2 but recently came across a 02 C4s with around 33,000 miles for a decent asking price of $49900. The car I am looking for will be mostly a street car but with occasional days at the track. The car will also be run in the One Lap of America in 07 or 08 with my father. I have no hope of winning just the desire to finish and enjoy the experience with no maintenance or repairs needed. All my experience at the track is in rear wheel cars so I am curious if I would enjoy an AWD on the track and the street. FYI, I live in NC so winter weather is not really a concern and my track car is a 1975 2002 that I race in vintage events. In comparison the C2 I am looking at is a 2000 with aerokit and has 21000 miles with an asking price of $44,900. Main questions: 1. Track enjoyment 2. Maintenance costs 3. Depreciation 4. Daily driving I would appreciate any opinons and thoughts. Feel free to ask any questions. I know this is similar to a recent post but my needs are a little different. And finally a big thanks to all who post on Rennlist. I have learned so much. Thanks big time.

POST 2Original post

Well the C4S is more than just AWD....When compared to the C2, it has bigger brakes, wider rubber, wider fenders, usually more options, and will depreciate less. The C4S is bascially a Turbo without the Turbo engine, but the rest of the running gear. I have a C4 cab and have had NO AWD repairs with 108k miles on the clock so I would say the upkeep will be the same. Whether you will like the AWD is personal...I LOVE it, but if you like to powerslide and drift, then the AWD is not the car for you...Its very stable and pretty damn hard to get it sideways...Go to your local Porsche dealer and drive a 996 C2 and a 996 C4S...then decide which one you liked more. By the way, 49k for a C4S is a really good price.

POST 3Original post

If the other one is C4S for 49K? i'd get that in a second...

POST 4Original post

Not if I get there first! That's a great price.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, I may have found the reason for such a good deal. I pulled the carfax and the VIN # says it is originally a Canadian car but the problem is that the report say it is a "911 Carrera Base Model/GT2". What the heck? The car is located at a reportedly reputable dealer and the photos clearly show a wide body 996. I was planning on visiting the car and doing a PPI but now I am a little confused. Is it possible for a Canadian car's VIN to do that? I will be calling the dealership to ask about this discrepancy. https://rennlist.com/forums/newreply...e=1&p=3209556#

POST 7Original post

it could be a standard carrera woth a widebody kit.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Called Dealer to ask about VIN# and car description discrepancy but car has been SOLD.

POST 9Original post

A C4S will hold it's value better than a C2, overall better car, maint same. Fun DD/wknd toy, looks waaay better than a C2 imo.

POST 10Original post

C2 is a better track car sans the weak brakes which can be fixed for less than the price difference. C4S is a better street car. Also at the $50k mark, think about a 2002 (MkII) C2

POST 11Original post

If you are looking to become a better driver, go with the C2.

POST 12Original post

LOL, I bought this car!! Its effing awsum, and believe me, it's a C4S. I got it for 49k. It was originally Canadian, so headlights always stay on. Are there any other downsides to it being a Canadian Car? Here is link to my 1st post: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...5&page=1&pp=15 Oh, I forgot to mention, it also has RUF Aluminum Pedals. POST 13Original post

Well.....it's exhaust has a kind'a funny accent . Congratulations on a great buy. And welcome to Rennlist. I know you like the rear wing. FYI, it doesn't work with the basic front C4S air dam. Car will be unstable at speed. You'll need to get a front "wing" as well to balance it.
