Checked with my dealer - it's not cheap, but he'll replace the factory unit with an OEM SSK along with the linkage - all parts and labor around $800.

Phil - I installed my B&M SSK about 2 months after I got mt '04 996, which, like you, is my first P-car.

Buy the B&M SSK and agency power link (not necessary but do it) for under $200 and get it installed by a reputable porsche garage.

I had the OEM SSK installed today and WOW what a difference.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had the OEM SSK installed today and WOW what a difference. It is really night and day the difference in feel of the car. It now feels like a true sports car. I am really amazed this is not standard equipment. I cannot believe Porsche would still sell the old long throw outdated shifter. Hell the FOrd MUstang comes with an SSK now. This should be standard equipment. HEck just charge an extra $300 on the price of the car and make it standard. I would feel better then.
is it notchier?
I rather have long if short throws come at the price of a stubborn reverse or sticky 2nd gear.
sometimes I wish I would never have driven that S2000 gear box.
seems this porsche community is divided into those with SSK (those who know) and those who do not have SSK (those who would if they only knew).
For the have nots: Its not stiff, its precise, you don't miss gears, you enjoy every gear change even though it doesnt last long. Ask yourself why this mod tops every list of must have mods. Get one.
A convert.
Agreed. Frnakly, it's not notchier, it's cleaner and more direct. AFter driving the SSK for a month and then driving my father's non-SSK car, I was beyond surprised at how bad the old shifter is: goopy, jello, uncertain, and LONG. For my part, I have not had any problems getting into reverse, first, second or any gear. It is crisp and short and feels like what a sports car should be.
To that end, there's about a thousand posts on Rennlist and I can't remember seeing one where anybody regreted the mod. That was the clincher for me when I first did it; well that and the fact that my service tech lamented the fact that PCNA didn't bring it in on cars stock to save him the hassle (apparently, it's not fun to do these more than once or twice and just becomes plain old manual labor).
Did you all DIY? I know there's been a lot of discussion on the board re. B&M v. OEM v. no difference, etc. Which did you go with? I'm going to do this, but am not too 'mechanically inclined' (wife says the only tool I'm good at is the phone), so likely will have dealer install. What should I expect to pay and precisely what parts will I need to buy - is there simply a short shifter or full kit? Sorry for all the questions, but this is my first P-car and I'm pretty new at this. Last cars I tuned up myself were my '67 Triumph TR4A-IRS and '72 BMW 2002!

Other than removing the rear center console, which just needs time and patience, the easiest way of installing the SSK is to purchase the SSK unit in the housing. You won't have to pop off joints, break tabs, etc. etc. etc. You also get the alignment/lock down tool to confirm that your shifter is in the proper position. I went this route simply b/c eliminating any possible mistakes is the most important step for a DIY'er. The cost of the complete unit is more but I like quick, painless installs.
Phil - I installed my B&M SSK about 2 months after I got mt '04 996, which, like you, is my first P-car. Prior to that install, I had NEVER done anything like that to any of my cars. It took me about 2.5 hours but it took about 20 minutes to figure out how to remove the shofter **** without smacking myself in the face with the ****. If I were going to do it today, I could do so in about 1.25 to 1.5 hours.
Do the DIY! It really will make you appreciate the SSK much more just because YOU installed it! If you want , I will even post some handy "tips" to help with the install. I have posted these 3 or 4 times in other threads, but I would be happy to post them again. GO FOR IT!
If your doing the SSK, whether it is the OEM, B&M, or Schnell, you definitely want to replace the shift linkage. This is the part where the shifter cable connects and attaches to the bottom of your shifter. The factory one has a rubber insert and plastic, they usually break when really ripping through the gears alot. But beyond that, if you like that firm crisp feeling like the S2000 or most JDM gear boxes have, then this will make the SSK experience much better.

Checked with my dealer - it's not cheap, but he'll replace the factory unit with an OEM SSK along with the linkage - all parts and labor around $800. Yeah, I know it's a lot. I'm assuming that putting in the SSK (especially OEM) wouldn't void the warrantee or CPO in any way, is this correct?
Phil
Phil - $800 = the following
o B&M SSK $250
o Links $100
o Aluminum Gauge rings $115
o Aluminum Pedals $200 (aluminum pedal group buy going on right now)
o A very nice dinner for you and your wife $135
o Total $800
Enjoyment of personally installing mods yourself: tremendous
Special feeling your wife has from enjoying an evening out: Priceless
Phil, it's an easy DIY, really. I wouldn't bother with the fancy linkage, you'll never need it, the cup cars don't.
I think the oem is the way to go(saves the warranty), it comes two ways in and out of the plastic housing. The latter were from the line, meant for assembly at the plant, extras basically. The teq retrofit unit is just the shifter, just like the BM. When you do it,just pop the shift links on/off the shift tower, NO ADJUSTING needed.
I'll walk you thru it, very easy.

just started looking at a SSK, and a few questions. It sounds like there is not much difference between the B&M and OEM - is that correct? What are the best places to shop for either?
and I see a few shifters on E-bay that look like B&M, but do not say that - are these legit - the prices are around $100 - here is a link to one

thanks
$800 is crazy. Buy the B&M SSK and agency power link (not necessary but do it) for under $200 and get it installed by a reputable porsche garage. Not worth the DIY for 1hrs work. Total cost should not exceed $300. For $800 they must be fitting the OEM complete with housing and thats not necessary. I just got mine done in New Zealand. I imported the parts from Karfiesta and my cost was less than $800 after paying $200 infreaight costs.
Remember, you're a surgeon, I'm a pediatrician! It's a given that you're much better with your hands than I am. I'll let you (and others) know what I opt to do - first off, it sounds like I can get this done professionally for significantly less than $800.
Phil
DCP - If you decide to do the DIY, let me know when you are going to do it. If you run into trouble, post a "need help with SSK" message on the board. I'll monitor the board and if we can't resolve the problem "on line", I'll PM you my cell phone number and we can talk it through. How's that for a HELP DESK?
Tim, thanks. Don't mean to be a PIA with this, but when I called my dealer, he said he had both the OEM SSK and the linkage upgrade. I'm assuming the linkage is an OEM Porsche part rather than the part offered by Vividracing. Am I correct on this - I can call him tomorrrow to get this clarified. Interesting, on the Vividracing site, the blue linkage part is plastic - I thought the upgrade was metal.
Any insight on this??
Phil
Checked with my dealer (Brandywine). They will use OEM SSK with Shiftlink from Evolution Motorsport for the linkage upgrade. Anyone have experience with the Evo unit?
