Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The last I checked all torque converter and the surround are filled with transmission fluid in order for it to function.
Leading evidence: 'Check torque converter and the surround are' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check torque converter and the surround are' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I see the letters RMS always being talked about, and now that i feel better about the smoke in the mornings once in a while, is there anything I whould worry about at 27,000 miles? the car seems to be perfect, but still just wanna be on teh safe side.
Dr Jeremy B
RMS = Rear Main Seal. In layman's term basically it is a round gasket seal on the input shaft that separates the engine from the transimission, and basically it leaks and causes dirty driveways.
Input shaft = the other end of the crank shaft where the circular motion of the engine is transfered to the transmission.
There are many debated reasons why it leaks... will not go there for now.
Minor cases, dirty driveway
Serious cases it will cause the clutch to be contanminated and slipe.....
Thanks for the info, I did do a search before this post, but only found the term RMS, but didnt really get the meaning. Promise I'm not lame, but I Just hope mine doesn't leak. So what else goes wrong with these cars 02 996, on a regular basis?
Paul, that was cold...... but funny!
Speaking of Bob, I haven't seen any posts from him in about 3 weeks or so. Actually, there are a few others that have been MIA: Itzkirb, Robyn, RLandis, haven't heard anything from him in 6 months.
Maybe we should create an RMS Paranoia forum and ban all RMS madness from the 996 Forum? The RMS Paranoia Forum can also include discussion on UFOs, Bigfoot, Chupacabre and other unexplainable phenomenon. Unfortunately, like moth to flame, I still click on threads containing the dreaded "RMS"... oops, I did it again.
You guys are too funny.
I'm actually having my second one done right now. Hope they get it right. OTOH, maybe I should hope they don't
. I think I'll start anothet thread.
OK heres another potentially ignorant newbie question regarding RMS- is it a concern on tiptronic cars as well or just manuals? Obviouslyl both have a main seal, but appears main potential is to ruin clutch.
Ooohhh Dell's gonna get you
The problem that some cars have with the RMS is that the car starts to leak oil. The cause of the leak, as well as the rate of the leak, can vary from car to car, and have nothing to do with whether the car is standard or automatic. Under some circumstances, oil leaking can ruin a clutch on a standard car, but not always, but that, in my opinion, is an ancillary issue to the main one: the oil leak.
Hey Todd. Great pic in the avitar by the way. Is that the disguise you use to get past the wife when sneaking out to the track
How's the 944 treating you? Looks like in your sig you have it spec'd out now. Very cool!
As for getting the newb.....I have passed that torch to Tim (gota911).
Actually that is a very good question.
As I was told by the dealer technician, the tiptronic cars don't have the RMS problem.
But after doing some thinking... Obviously there is still a rear main seal, and obviously it would leak, right?
So the components right after the input shaft on a tiptronic car is a torque converter, as it is still an automatic, however fancy name you want to call it. Steptronic, tiptronic, whatever... The last I checked all torque converter and the surround are filled with transmission fluid in order for it to function. So either the pressure from the torque converter is keep the RMS sealed? Or the leak gets mixed together the transmission fluid? Unless there is a separate chamber that separates the torque converter chamber from the engine side?
I wonder....
