I had an old Ford truck that used the steel wool oil bath setup.

I'm using the stock air box with a BMC drop in and the Fabspeed silicon hose that goes from the air box to the TB.

As I have the PSE in my 996 and i dont wish to alter my soundtrack I have decided not to change my OE Air filter for the reasons stated above.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am thinking of putting this in take system in my 2003 Carrera Tiptronic. My car was bought from new, has only covered 39k miles with full Porsche service history . Any feedback , revelant info will be greatly appreciated . Fabspeed is amazing quality and I have a very good percetption as I have heard and seen and sriven their add ons on a number of Porsches
I don't rate their intake system, Porsche got the air box right in my opinion.
The fabspeed intake can cause issues, i've read in some cases it doesn't fit correctly and the primary source of air is the hot engine bay.
If you're wanting to get some fabspeed product(s) buy their exhaust parts, there are better reviews about them.
Then again its your car and all the information provided above is second hand.
The noise of hot air being sucked into your engine! haha I agree it would sound good.
However the EVOMS intake looks better IMO and it has more thought/design put into it. At least it retains a snorkel from the decklid type setup to feed the pod filter air.
Interesting.. thanks for the info. I am not after any exhaust system as I have the PSE on my car and love it and not interested in ECU upgrades etc. I am only interested in a Air intake system, provided of course it will cause no problems and give an actual increase in bhp and torque , sound is of no interest as the PSE has enough growl for me and I have a second PSE relay with a switch on it so in some occasions i turn the little switch and the PSE is on at all times ( with the capability to deactivate it from the dash switch)
Fabspeed LOOKS much better than any of the others in my opinion.
The "sucking hot air in from the engine bay" debate has long since gone on - and it makes some sense with both the Fabspeed and the K&N products.
The EVOMS design actually (somewhat) promotes the "cold air" intake through a snorkel type design as well as sealing off the filter chamber against the deck lid when closed.
That said - I have the EVOMS on both my 997 and my 996. I can't say whether they actually make a performance difference - I know that I didn't lose anything - but I can say this... the sound is GREAT (but you would get that with any product).
Overall - looks goes to Fabspeed - but in the department of functionality - I give the nod to EVOMS.
If you only care about performance and intake sound, just install this with a BMC drop in filter.

I love mine!
i have it, looks awesome, sounds awesome but i have not driven it in heat yet so i am curious to see how it copes with the heat / humidity this summer
I am thinking I will likely end up installing some fans to pull or push the hot air in the engine bay. I am not sure how much moving air occurs back there even when moving, clearly when its sitting still it cannot be good.
That's what I just took off of mine... what I found is that the sound of a CAI kit is a world apart from that - and that's a big step up from the stock sound...
I will probably be selling mine shortly.
An open air filter will always be way louder than the stock air box. It did make a nice little difference in sound for me and it does not suck in hot air.
I have the Filter D mufflers with NHP high flow cats and I'm more than happy. Driving a cab makes a big difference in what is heard in the cabin as opposed to a hard top.
I run Fisters and an EVOM on my 997 cab.... very happy as well.
The 996 will be running catless x-pipe, Fabspeed Maxflo cans and the EVOMS... should sound good.
Suggest related search- IPD and Jake Raby. He made some useful comments a while back. Maybe others besides this?
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...pd-plenum.html
Some good info in there, in summary stick to the standard 74mm plenum unless you're planing on heavy modification.
Although in saying that if one had a full aftermarket exhaust system - headers, x-pipe and mufflers (from a reputable brand) would that warrant the 82mm GT3 throttle body + matching IPD plenum?
Or are Jake's comments that the 82mm + IPD still provides too much air to a 3.6L capacity engine regardless of bolt on modifications I wonder?
Oooo another IPD plenum thread!
Really? Which stock air box? How many thousands of dyno evaluations have you performed?
They don't? Ever data logged the difference at 3 points of the intake system, back to back?
Yeah, they don't foul MAFs, or cause a choppy idle, either, right?
I'm a mechanical engineer by degree. My father raced and worked in the auto testing business for 40ish years. I've been tinkering with cars all my life. If you search the internet, I once conducted a large test on various high performance air filters. I even got threatening calls from one aftermarket coming any fir a while. I told them to stuff it. It's all hype. If there were something that good with no drawbacks OEMs would do it. It's hype and advertising designed to separate you from your money.
Do what you wish but high quality oem paper filters are all you need. You build a bigger engine that makes more power and know for a fact your filter is a restriction? Then get a bigger oem style paper filter and airbox!
If a filter flows significantly more (claim) but has significantly less volume (think cotton gauze or foam) then you can rest assured it allows more dirt to pass through. Air filtration is a simple mechanical process there is no magic.
I agree whole- heartedly! Test an aftermarket filter two weeks after its installed, and you'll really see what it does to the engine. Throw one on the flow bench, and you'll learn more.
Yes, fishing lures don't catch fish, they catch fishermen. Thats why we don't develop, or sell any of these bolt- on goodies. Most are offered by people that no less about a Porsche engine that the people that read this forum daily.
It took a long while before getting my first Porsche. My oem air filter test bed was a Miata. I will be using oem air filters in the 996 though. Open air box, remove old filter, drop in new one, reseal airbox viola! Cleaning and oiling gauze or foam is a waste of time. If oil bath filters are so great why did all oems drop them in the 50s and 60s? Ever mess with a steel wool oil bath air cleaner?
My favorite lol aftermarket claim was our filter traps more dirt as it gets dirty.... so when it's clean it traps less dirt? Okay, no thanks.
Yes if you know how to search the NHTSB database, every OEM has several TSBs related to this topic. Many service managers are using this as a reason to fight warranty claims too. If you really want to run one of these types of filters anyway.... please add a can of CRC electric contact cleaner to your toolbox and use it frequently.
I had an old Ford truck that used the steel wool oil bath setup. I hated having to mess with it since it was always filthy. I also had an ah ha moment realizing why would anyone go back to this type of design as "superior?"
Jake, I'm just speaking of the stock unit that comes in the 996. I was just mentioning an open air filter (conical) will make it louder. I'm using the stock air box with a BMC drop in and the Fabspeed silicon hose that goes from the air box to the TB. I'm not using the type the OP originally posted about.
Any car I've ever pulled the stock air box out and replaced with an open air style conical filter, has always been louder. I have nothing to back this up with except my personal experience.
I must go sit in a beer cooler, as I did not have my flame suit ready.
The BMC is a cotton gauze filter that is covered in oil that replaces the OEM paper filter inside the OEM housing.
If you want more noise keep the OEM paper filter and search for "orange cap mod" or "Helmholtz resonator" removal. Although i'm sceptical about this mod as there was a section of the factory manual that stated the muffler/resonator box did more than just reduce noise (ill try and find it).
Do yourself a favour and don't get the BMC filter as it causes more problems than its worth IMO as it can foul your MAF. When I had one in my car (for about 30mins before I took it out) the car felt slower and less responsive however that would have been me not allowing the ECU to adjust. Although i'm glad I took it out as a filter to me is something that gets dirty and you replace, not something that gets dirty and you clean as best you can and re-oil...
Thanks! And yes paper only for me. Even if I get the K&N intake I was going to replace it with the paper filter. That one sounds pretty amazing for the money.
Guess what causes more phantom issues with these engines than anything?
1- Looks
2- Sound
When we see problems caused by these things, we just say "well, there's another one who is paying his stupidity tax".
Its kind of brutal around here.
Don't get me wrong, I am NO purist! I just see things that are offered by companies that do zero development, and do not consider the things that need to be considered when making a modified part. The biggest one are those big aftermarket bumpers, that have "larger inlets" but route all the cooling air to the outboard corners of the air inlets, and radiators. Those are responsible for cracked cylinder heads, all the time.
The issue is, people won't pay for a truly developed component, that really works. They want a look, or a sound, and care nothing about proper function, or efficiency.
Thanks everyone for your replies and interesting info. As I have the PSE in my 996 and i dont wish to alter my soundtrack I have decided not to change my OE Air filter for the reasons stated above.
