Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Sounds like you installed the numeric cables (?) as well as the numeric shifter.

I used the existing cables and no noticeable increase in noise.

Suggestion
If I have it in the shortest setting, there is a chance it will rub the carpet which may cause some of the inconsistency you are experiencing.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

how many of you have the numeric shifter for your 996?
i had the shifter put into my GTS cayenne and it feels excellent (stock cables)
but, just had one put into my 2003 4S
https://numericracing.com/products/9...mission-bundle
1st, 3rd and 5th feel like shaking hands with the tin man from wizard of oz
and the noise from cables are very annoying, harmonics or rattling
told my mechanic and he will adjust
but says the noise is a common complaint
these are the cables that came with the shifter
maybe go back to stock cables like the cayenne install?
he said, there is no room there by the emergency brake and etc etc.
so wanted ask the crew here if you have the numeric shifter, did you go with the stock cables or numeric cables? and any suggestions appreciated, thanks
The shifter vibrating in the up gears is because it is not correctly adjusted or the throw is way too short.
I have Numeric cables and shifter and don't notice added noise. The cables must not touch anything under the car. Numeric provides soft rubber sleeves for locations where the cables might touch.
I have the shifter and cables. I wrapped the cables inside the cabin with Dynamat and also applied it underneath the center console. Noise has been cut down drastically, but you can still hear it with windows up and radio off - I don't mind it. As for the odd gears, probably just a couple turns of the connection on the transmission side. I had a similar issue when I installed mine at first.
I forgot to add that I have mine set in the mid setting. If I have it in the shortest setting, there is a chance it will rub the carpet which may cause some of the inconsistency you are experiencing.
Ive got the Numeric shifter with cables. Definitely noisier than stock, but for me, well worth it. As mentioned earlier, dyna-mat in/on the underside of the console will probably help, as well as the silicone sleeves that Numeric sells (for a ridiculous price I might add).
i think i am spoiled by the GTS outcome. same height shifter length, and the center spring made the shifting feel like a new car
and there is no noise
this is using stock cables
i don't see an advantage to numeric cables (stronger for durability?) to me if they make ANY noise, i am putting stock cables back in and no need to add sound material
tell me if i am missing something
this is like payback
my mechanic rolled his eyes when he saw the cables with the shifter
i don't him to 'work on' or shield these numeric cables and have them still make any noise
would rather have him hate my guts, and take out these cables and put in the stock ones
