They were the best winter tires I have used, even better than the Blizzaks that I ran on my wife’s Mercedes E320 wagon.

Guys, I run a slightly up sized dws set on factory 18s.

Agree about the Conti DWS 06, I've got a set I use year round on my Mercedes and a set for winter on my C4S.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm planning on buying the Porsche recommended Sottozero3 tires for my 1999 C4 but I just realized that they are run-flats. I've always hated the way run flats feel... but it has been years since I've had any. Are they better these days? Is there a better option that what Porsche recommends? Obviously much of what I'm asking about is subjective... just interested in hearing your thoughts.
I agree, I would stay away from run-flats. You may want to have another look. I think most of the sizes we would want to use, even in the Pirelli Sottozero 3, are available in normal configuration. For what it's worth, I have plans to get a set of S3s for my car. They'll be a little unconventional in size, though (if I go with the current plan).
I bought a set of used 17 rims with blizzaks mounted on them. I got them from a guy who ran them on his 993. I like the 17 in the winter and the tires are excellent. I normally run 18
I'd like to run the Conti DWS 06 ,,, trick is finding them, I think the only one available for the back of my C4 is the 265-35x18..
I've run them on a BMW and in the PNW they rock for our changeable weather.. Anyone with some road time on Winter skins on a C4 Post up...
Maybe not exactly answering your question, but here is one other tire to consider. When I had my Mustang GT, I put a set of Pirelli Scorpion Ice winter tires on it, at the recommendation of Tire Rack. They were the best winter tires I have used, even better than the Blizzaks that I ran on my wife’s Mercedes E320 wagon. Deepest snow I drove in was probably about 4” with the Mustang, and the traction was excellent. Also they were very quiet on dry pavement too.

Agree about the Conti DWS 06, I've got a set I use year round on my Mercedes and a set for winter on my C4S. Just bought the set for my Benz and was considering getting a new set for the Porsche as those have multiple years use on them now but couldn't find the proper size. Looking at the Continental website it appears they are no longer produced so you'll need an exhaustive search if that's what you seek. Obviously there are well recommended options. I have driven in the worst of conditions with those tires without issue. Drove through a snow/sleet storm on I-95 where multiple cars either slid off the road or were pulling over because of conditions. The Porsche took it in stride, it was awesome how the car handled.
Guys, I run a slightly up sized dws set on factory 18s. I know the rears are 295 so probably 40 18 and then fronts 235 45 18.....I think (cars outside and I'm not going there now). Bottom line, they are a great hybrid for 4 seasons. I certainly don't reach for the C2 in snow but I'm not afraid to drive if it happens to start snowing.
No rubbing issues all around and I'm lowered on a gt3 coil over setup. Plus it corrects the speedo by 2mph.
Yeah, I'm looking for a set of dedicated winter tires and being a C4, I'm concerned that I might do harm to the drive system if there is too much change in the overall diameter ratios between the front and rear.
You are right and that is another frustration. Sometimes the tire is listed as a run flat and then sometimes it isn't... on the same site and same product. I think that the ones I have in my cart at Tirerack right now are the non-run flats.
Yep one of the frustrating things about this car,, didn't think of actually trying to order the winter tires until after I bought it,, I dont see the Michelin Sports as a winter tire or even a all season.. (LOL) Its looking like many manufacturers are already dropping the manufacture of the 18" tire selection in favor of 19 or 20.. I'm probably going to find a set of 17's just for the winter options.
Yeah, and the aftermarket 19" wheels are cheaper than the 18" these days. I just don't love the look of the larger than 18" wheels on the 996 and older 911 cars. I don't hate the larger wheels, but the 18" wheels and that sidewall height just look perfect on the 996.
