Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You can always go bigger if you're willing to measure and discuss clearance, roll fenders, use spacers and custom lugs, adjust ride height, create custom wheels with just the right backspacing.
Leading evidence: 'Install 235/35/19 front and 295/30/19 rear' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I run a custom set of CCW Classic race wheels that are 18x9.0's in front with 235/40's and 18x11.0's in back with 295/30's for my race wheels.

Suggestion
I have bought a set of wheels and tires from Tire Rack that were beyond the recommended size for my car, but I spec'd the particular LTW SSR rim I wanted with an oversized tire that was calculated to fit within my rolled fenders, over spacers, etc.

I would strongly recommend running the normal 18" fitting (18x8/18x10) with 225/40 and 285/30 fitting.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a new to me '02 996 C2. All stock. What is the largest size wheel/tire I can put on it without any other mods? Right now it has 205/50/17 F and 255/40/17 R. Thanks from a newbie.

Well, that's the largest standard size, and I bet it's the largest size for a sensible recommendation. I don't even know how many sets of wheels I've bought from Tire Rack, but they all fit and I am always very happy with the quality, look and clearance. Nice functionalities of the website at Tire Rack is the ability to preview the look of tires on your car and look up the weight of the wheels. That is a really great organization. There is an international corporate quality program called ISO, and I don't think Tire Rack participates but man alive, that company meets and exceeds my expectations every time I have used them.
The true largest possible tire size involves more than the OP probably had in mind. You can always go bigger if you're willing to measure and discuss clearance, roll fenders, use spacers and custom lugs, adjust ride height, create custom wheels with just the right backspacing. But unless you are in competition, go with what the Tire Rack recommends as your largest size. You can get 18" takeoffs from another 996 and that should not be a problem, and could be your cheapest wheel enhancement solution (somebody, correct me if I'm wrong). OTOH, your coolest option could be a set of gorgeous and LTW BBS rims from Tire Rack; or go all out and get a set of Kinesis rims, that company would have a corporate opinion on the largest size you'd want to go with their 18" or 19" rims (think close to $1000/wheel not including tire).
Your owner's manual will list Porsche's wheel options.
Don't forget that ride quality is inversly proportional to wheel diameter. assuming overall diameter is the same.

I also have an 02 Carrera 2. Recently, I installed 235/35/19 front and 295/30/19 rear. Excellent look with 4" lip and cornering. They don't rub the fender as long you don't lower the car. Good luck!!!
I run a custom set of CCW Classic race wheels that are 18x9.0's in front with 235/40's and 18x11.0's in back with 295/30's for my race wheels. My car is lowered about an inch with a ROW M030 suspension and GT3 control arms. This fitment works without any fender rolling, rubbing or issues.
I still run my stock 18" Carrera wheels and stock size tires for the street. I would strongly recommend running the normal 18" fitting (18x8/18x10) with 225/40 and 285/30 fitting. This is more than enough rubber on the street. Keep in mind that moving up to this fitting will have a significant change in your ride quality, but will look correct with your stock ride height.

You can go bigger than this!! The stock GT3 wheels are 18x8.5 40et and 11x63 63et. Stock tires are 235/40 front and 295/30 rear.
These will fit on a narrow body 996 Carrera.
