Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Does this mean that the factory intake draws warm air somewhere too or that maybe I just didn't "seal" the factory snorkel enough to kill it or make it run roughly?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A general question for the forum: I've been following this 996 aftermarket intake HP topic with quite some interest, specifically as it relates to intakes (like K&N) that may be less restrictive but are open to hot air from the engine compartment. On a whim I opened the engine lid on my bone stock 996 and placed my hand over the factory air snorkel covering it with the car idleing and nothing happened. I then placed a few sheets of paper over the air intake snorkel to "block" it and again nothing happened. My question is this, if the engine is supposed to be an "air pump" and there is clearly a large volume of air being dumped through the exhaust, where is the engine getting fresh air if I am blocking the stock intake snorkel? Does this mean that the factory intake draws warm air somewhere too or that maybe I just didn't "seal" the factory snorkel enough to kill it or make it run roughly? Just thought I'd see if y'all had any insight...

You didn't seal it well enough. Take a look at your throttle plate and keep in mind see how much of the intake tract is blocked with it closed. At idle you really don't pull in much air....WOT is a different story. My guess is that when you blocked the snorkel it easily pulled in some air from the connection points around the plastic housing.
