Suggestion

I was told that you can replace the vinyl airbag hub on the 4-spoke wheel with a leather one, but if you ask US dealers, they will tell you there's no such thing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry this is a newbie question. I've noticed two different types of steering wheels on the '99 996; square 4 point and triangular 3 pt. Why was there this difference and was this an "option?" Which one do you think is "better"? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Many, if not most, prefer the 3 point steering wheel, primarily because it looks better. Functionally, I don't know if one is "better" than the other.

POST 3Original post

The 3-spoke is an option and most like it better.

POST 4Original post

The 4-spoke came with a vinyl airbag hub with debossed Porsche emblem, whereas the optional 3-spoke one came wiht a leather airbag hub and colored crest emblem. Other than that, there's isn't any reason why the 3-spoke one is better. I was told that you can replace the vinyl airbag hub on the 4-spoke wheel with a leather one, but if you ask US dealers, they will tell you there's no such thing. www.carnewal.com may be able to get you a leather hub with colored crest for a 4-spoke wheel if you're interested. That's quite a bit less expensive than changing the wheel and hub.

POST 5Original post

Tradition was to have a 4 spoke so the driver kept his hands at 3 and 9 o'clock. IMHO its the best for driving.
